Introduction – The Hidden Oracle
Falling from the sky isn’t the worst thing that can happen to a god... landing in a New York dumpster while wearing acne and shame might be. That’s how Apollo’s exile begins: cast down by Zeus, stripped of his immortality, and trapped in the mortal body of a flabby teenager named Lester Papadopoulos. Powerless and clueless, he must navigate a world where he’s no longer worshipped—but mocked, beaten, and bound to a sarcastic young demigod.
In The Hidden Oracle, Rick Riordan turns divine punishment into a hilarious descent, where every moment challenges Apollo’s ego, dignity, and fading sense of identity. What starts as a mission for redemption spirals into a journey through demonic forests, plague spirits, and imperial conspiracies. At his side—or perhaps dragging him forward—is Meg McCaffrey, a girl with golden swords and a past she refuses to explain.

Chapter 1 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Mortality Sucks
Apollo wakes up falling from the sky and lands in a dumpster in New York City. Stripped of his divinity by Zeus, he finds himself trapped in the body of a mortal teenager named Lester Papadopoulos. Dazed and disoriented, he discovers that his new body is weak and aching. Without powers or clear memories of his punishment, he crawls out of the alley only to be assaulted by two thugs, Cade and Mikey. Despite his divine pride, he tries to intimidate them, but his voice trembles, and his threat has no effect. Confident that he still possesses his superhuman strength, he attempts to fight back, but his attack fails, and he is brutally beaten. As the blows rain down on him, he experiences the full impact of his newfound mortality, unable to defend himself. Before losing consciousness, he can only lament his state and wonder how long his punishment in this mortal body will last.
Chapter 2 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – An Unexpected Ally
Weakened and bleeding, Apollo is left behind by his attackers, who mock his identity and steal his wallet. As he struggles to recover, a small girl with an unusual sense of authority appears. Her name is Meg McCaffrey, and with a surprising display of power, she uses rotten fruit to defeat Cade and Mikey. Terrified, the thugs flee. Although Apollo is grateful, he cannot help but feel humiliated for being rescued by a child. Meg observes him curiously and bluntly asks if he is really Apollo. When he confirms, she shows little interest in his suffering and instead claims him as her servant. At that moment, a thunderclap in the sky seals the bond between them. Apollo, desperate, protests but knows that his fate is now tied to this strange demigod, who appears childish yet possesses unusual powers.
Chapter 3 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Looking for Percy Jackson
Forced to accept his new reality as Meg’s servant, Apollo follows her through the city in search of help. Meg, carefree and energetic, proves to be an unpredictable and stubborn child. Apollo, ashamed of his physical and emotional state, faces the horror of having acne and love handles, another sign of his mortal degradation. Meg shows no sympathy and urges him to keep moving. With no better option, Apollo decides to seek out Percy Jackson, an experienced demigod who might help them reach Camp Half-Blood. As they walk, Meg mentions having seen glowing lumps following them, but she dismisses them. When they reach Percy’s neighborhood, Apollo recognizes his dented Prius, marked by encounters with pegasi, and feels relieved. However, Meg hesitates at the door, feeling uneasy. Apollo reassures her, and they finally ring the doorbell. Percy’s mother answers and, after a moment of confusion, allows them inside.
Chapter 4 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Percy Jackson Says “No”
Percy opens the door and greets Apollo with surprise and skepticism. He quickly notices Apollo’s pitiful condition, and Apollo is forced to explain what happened. Percy is not enthusiastic about getting involved, making it clear that he has other priorities, such as his family and school. Sally Jackson, his mother, welcomes them kindly and offers food and clean clothes. Apollo showers, treats his wounds, and changes, but still feels defeated. While talking with Percy, he learns that six months have passed since his last appearance during the war against Gaia. Although Percy agrees to take them to camp, he firmly states that he cannot join any dangerous missions. Apollo, frustrated at not having an experienced hero by his side, nonetheless accepts Percy’s help in reaching Camp Half-Blood and prepares for the journey with Meg, who continues to act completely unfazed.
Chapter 5 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Heading to Camp Half-Blood
During dinner at the Jacksons’ home, Meg enjoys her new clothes and Sally’s hospitality, while Apollo continues to lament his condition. Percy explains that he has promised to stay out of adventures to focus on his personal life and the arrival of his baby sister. Frustrated, Apollo recounts his past experiences as a mortal and explains that he can only regain his divinity if he overcomes the trials set by Zeus. Percy questions whether Apollo has any useful skills in his current state, further shaking Apollo’s confidence. Meg mentions the glowing lumps following them, which unsettles Percy. They decide to leave as soon as possible to avoid being attacked in the city. Before departing, Sally gives them blue cookies, and Percy promises to return soon. As they prepare to leave, Apollo realizes that his future is uncertain and that he will be entirely dependent on Meg and Camp Half-Blood.
Chapter 6 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Aquaman at the Wheel and Danger on the Road
Apollo, Meg, and Percy begin their journey to Camp Half-Blood in Percy’s Prius. Apollo complains about the car’s condition and suffers from nausea due to Percy’s rough driving. Along the way, Percy mentions that the Oracle of Delphi is still not working, which unsettles Apollo. When Meg notices three glowing figures following them, Percy takes an exit and maneuvers through various obstacles to shake off their pursuers. Eventually, they arrive at an orchard, but the Prius gets stuck between the trees. The figures reveal themselves as nosoi, plague spirits, advancing toward them with deadly intent. Apollo attempts to summon his former power, but nothing happens. Percy and Meg try to defend themselves, but swords and branches prove ineffective against the spirits. Aware of his vulnerability, Apollo panics as the nosoi prepare to strike with their deadly diseases.
Chapter 7 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – The Plague Spirits Attack
The nosoi surround Apollo, Percy, and Meg, mocking their weakness. Percy tries to fight them with his sword, but when he strikes them, they merely dissipate and reform. Meg uses a branch as a weapon, but the spirits absorb the wood, reducing it to dust. Desperate, Apollo attempts to intimidate them, but his former power is gone. As they try to escape, Percy creates a geyser to clear the choking cloud of disease, but Apollo is struck by one of the nosoi and feels the pestilence invade his body. Just when all seems lost, Meg hurls a frozen peach at one of the spirits, stunning it. Suddenly, an unknown force manifests around her. The fruit begins to levitate, and with a roar, a being made of peaches takes form. The creature, a karpos, launches itself at the nosoi, devouring them before they can react.
Chapter 8 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – The Mysterious Peach Karpos
The karpos summoned by Meg tears through the nosoi with terrifying ferocity, eliminating them one by one. Apollo and Percy watch in disbelief as the creature devours the plague spirits’ essence. Meg, surprised, does not understand how she summoned it, but the karpos appears to recognize her and clings to her leg like a loyal protector. Percy, weakened from exposure to the nosoi, shows symptoms of a cold but manages to recover with water from his fountain. The police arrive to investigate the Prius accident, forcing Percy to stay behind and provide an explanation. Before they leave, he warns them about the dangers of the forest they must cross to reach camp. Still in shock from what happened, Apollo reluctantly follows Meg and her newfound creature, now named Peaches. As they move away from the orchard, Apollo reflects on his fate and fears what awaits them in the enchanted forest.
Chapter 9 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – The Whispering Woods
Apollo and Meg reach the hills surrounding Camp Half-Blood, spotting its cabins, dining pavilion, and the towering Athena Parthenos statue. Excited to find refuge, Apollo attempts to lead Meg through the forest, but the trees seem to shift around them, altering the paths and trapping them in a natural maze. As they proceed, Apollo begins to hear a female voice echoing in his mind, urging him to seek the doors and warning of an imminent fire. Meg hears nothing, but Peaches, uneasy, vanishes into the underbrush. Terrified, Apollo loses control of his body and collapses, overwhelmed by the whispers and a sudden fever. Confused, Meg supports him and drags him through the forest. At last, the trees part, and they emerge into camp, where a group of demigods watches them in disbelief as Apollo faints.
Chapter 10 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – A Mortal God at Camp Half-Blood
Apollo wakes up in the cabin of his children, tended to by Will Solace, who confirms that he is completely human. Austin and Kayla, his other children, express concern over the camp’s worsening state and the loss of prophecies. Apollo recalls a dream in which a woman wearing a strange crown warned him of a fire that would consume him, and a man in a purple suit spoke of burning an Oracle. Upon leaving the cabin, Apollo is greeted by Meg and Nico di Angelo, who confirms that his mortal aura is undeniable. Chiron appears and gravely informs them that they must discuss the recent disappearances of demigods from camp. Still disoriented and feeling weak, Apollo realizes that his trial is only beginning and that something far more sinister awaits him in his mortal state.
Chapter 11 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – The Disappearances at Camp Half-Blood
Apollo and Meg arrive at the Big House, where Chiron informs them about the disappearance of three demigods from camp. Will and Nico spread the word about a meeting at dinner. Still adjusting to his new mortality, Apollo is surprised by Chiron’s aged appearance, a reflection of the camp’s growing troubles. While Meg explores the room and annoys Seymour, the sleeping leopard, Chiron explains that the problems began when the Oracle of Delphi stopped working due to Python’s return. Communications with the outside world have failed, Iris-messages no longer work, and satyrs have stopped bringing new demigods. Terrified by the thought of facing Python again, Apollo tries to evade responsibility, but Chiron insists that freeing the Oracle is crucial to restoring balance—and possibly his divinity.
Chapter 12 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – A Tense Dinner and News About Leo
During dinner, Apollo feels out of place and is treated as just another camper. He sits with his children at the Apollo table, while Meg joins the Hermes campers. The conversation revolves around the missing demigods and the absence of the Argo II heroes. Will and Nico report that Percy and Annabeth are in New York, Jason and Piper in Los Angeles, and Hazel and Frank at Camp Jupiter. As for Leo Valdez, they explain that he survived his explosion with Festus and left to rescue Calypso, but his only message was a cryptic hologram that raised more questions than answers. Becoming increasingly aware of his vulnerability, Apollo tries to convince himself that he will regain his powers. Kayla and Austin reassure him of their support, but the former god still feels useless and fearful of his new reality.
Chapter 13 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – The Dangers of the Three-Legged Death Race
During the post-dinner meeting, Harley, a young son of Hephaestus, presents his new version of the three-legged race, filled with mechanical traps and lethal obstacles. Some campers protest, given the recent disappearances, but Chiron insists on maintaining normal activities. Apollo is horrified to learn that the course will pass through Daedalus’s Labyrinth, a chaotic and dangerous place. Will explains that they have been trying to map the Labyrinth since the war against Gaia, but Apollo remains skeptical about its safety. When it’s time to choose a partner, Meg selects Apollo, forcing him to participate. As if his night couldn’t get any worse, Chiron officially introduces him as a new camper, prompting jokes and threats of hazing from the children of Ares and Hermes. However, when they attempt to trap Meg in a net, her protective spirit, Peaches, attacks violently, throwing the camp into chaos.
Chapter 14 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Meg, Daughter of Demeter, and Her Hidden Power
Peaches’ attack leaves the campers in shock as Meg breaks free and fends off the aggression with two golden swords summoned from her rings. Her skill is impressive and unnerves everyone, but the real surprise comes when a glowing sickle symbol with wheat stalks appears above her head, confirming her as a daughter of Demeter. Apollo panics at the revelation, knowing that Demeter’s children can be dangerous when enraged. Chiron calms the campers and sends Meg to the Demeter cabin, where her only roommate, Billie Ng, awaits her. Confused and worried about his master, Apollo struggles to process the situation. He retreats to the Apollo cabin, pretending to sleep as his children tenderly discuss taking care of him. Feeling useless and out of place, he finally succumbs to a deep, dreamless sleep—a brief respite that restores some of his strength for the next day.
Chapter 15 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – A Morning of Training and a Dangerous Discovery
Apollo wakes up feeling better and enjoys breakfast with Meg, who is still adjusting to her new identity. They discuss her cabin, her swords, and her stepfather, but she avoids giving details. Apollo recalls a vague memory about sacred trees but dismisses it. The morning is filled with humiliations: in music class, he plays so beautifully that it moves everyone to tears, but the effort exhausts him so much that he swears on the River Styx never to play or shoot an arrow again until he regains his divinity. Then, in archery class, his performance is disastrous, adding to his frustration. However, when he sees Sherman Yang walking in a trance toward the forest, he follows him alongside Kayla and manages to save him just in time. Disoriented, Sherman mentions the missing demigods, and Apollo finally recognizes a pattern: something in the forest is calling demigods and luring them to their doom.
Chapter 16 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – The Start of the Race and the Ignored Warning
Apollo tries to warn Chiron about the danger lurking in the forest, but the centaur is too busy organizing the three-legged race to pay attention. The campers, excited about the competition, offer bribes to Harley for hints, but the son of Hephaestus simply enjoys the situation. Apollo learns that Harley has spent months building a radio beacon to locate Leo Valdez, making him wonder if anyone would do the same for him. Ignored once again, he attempts to share his concerns with Meg, but she is only interested in the magical bands that will tie them together for the race. Just before the start, Apollo recalls an ancient oracle of talking trees and suspects it is hidden in the forest, luring the missing demigods. However, before he can warn anyone, the race begins abruptly, and everyone falls into Daedalus’s Labyrinth.
Chapter 17 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Deadly Traps in the Labyrinth
Apollo and Meg plunge into a dark tunnel and witness Connor and Paolo trigger a trap by picking up a golden apple, unleashing an avalanche of explosive iron balls. Trusting her instincts, Meg chooses a passage with a strange scent, ignoring Apollo’s fears. As they move forward, the air grows heavy, and the tunnel opens into a deep chasm. Apollo recognizes the location—they are beneath the Oracle of Delphi, in the cavern where Python has established his domain. Before they can flee, they overhear a conversation between Python and a mysterious man called the Beast, who claims that Apollo and Meg will be key to unlocking certain doors. The Beast mentions increasing the pressure and having an ally within the camp. Meg reacts with unusual fear upon hearing his voice. Trying not to reveal themselves, Apollo accidentally utters the name of the Oracle of Dodona, alerting their enemies and forcing them to flee in a panic.
Chapter 18 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – The Encounter with the Beast and the Desperate Escape
Trapped in the cavern beneath Delphi, Apollo and Meg try to remain unnoticed as Python and the Beast speak. The Beast confidently discusses his organization, his control over various oracles, and his need to destroy the Grove of Dodona. When Apollo inadvertently mentions its name aloud, their presence is revealed. In the chaos, Meg slips, and both tumble down the chasm, landing in a pile of trash. Apollo realizes Meg is hiding something about the Beast, especially when she admits that he killed her father. Dazed and covered in filth, they find a second golden apple and break free from their confinement. However, when Apollo tries to press Meg about her past, she orders him to be quiet. With the information they’ve gathered, Apollo knows they must act quickly, but they have no clear plan. The Beast is one step ahead, and his intentions are far more sinister than they had imagined.
Chapter 19 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Return to Camp and the Disappearance of Kayla and Austin
Apollo and Meg manage to escape the Labyrinth and emerge in the forest of Camp Half-Blood. Terrified by the whispers calling out to them, they run until they encounter the satyrs and Chiron. However, their relief is short-lived when Chiron informs them that Kayla and Austin have not returned. Despite wanting to go after them, Apollo is forced to stay behind and help Will tend to the injured racers. While working, he discovers that Harley feels guilty about what happened and reassures him, reminding him never to stop inventing. Later, Chiron insists they wait until morning to act, and Meg uses her authority over Apollo to prevent him from disobeying. Resigned, Apollo spends a sleepless night, worried about his children and the mystery surrounding the Grove of Dodona. With each passing minute, his sense of urgency grows, and his helplessness as a mortal becomes unbearable.
Chapter 20 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Rachel Elizabeth Dare and the Mystery of the Triumvirate
Before dawn, a helicopter bearing the Dare Enterprises logo arrives at camp. Rachel Elizabeth Dare, the Oracle of Delphi, steps out looking exhausted and troubled. In a private meeting with Apollo, Chiron, and Meg, she reveals that communications have failed and that all attempts to contact Camp Jupiter have been unsuccessful. Additionally, she has been investigating a mysterious organization called Triumvirate Holdings, a company that has existed for centuries and has financed demigod wars in the past. She presents a photo of its leaders—three shadowy figures who may be ancient Romans. Apollo, unable to recall key details, suspects that the Beast is one of them and that their plan is to control all ancient oracles. Finally, Apollo reveals that the Grove of Dodona, a forgotten oracle, may be hidden within Camp Half-Blood, making it the next target of their enemies.
Chapter 21 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – The Secret of the Grove of Dodona
Apollo reveals that there are five oracles and that the Grove of Dodona may be hidden in the forest of Camp Half-Blood. Rachel and Chiron question its significance, and he explains that this oracle, linked to Rhea rather than himself, is the only one Python cannot control. Rachel and Chiron believe that recovering it could provide hope against the Triumvirate of emperors. Meg decides that she and Apollo will go on the mission alone, as he must prove his worth. Despite his fear, Apollo accepts that his fate is tied to Meg and that they must depart as soon as they rest.
Chapter 22 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Armed for the Mission in the Forest
Tension runs high in camp following Kayla and Austin’s disappearance. Apollo and Meg prepare to leave: she selects her swords, while Apollo reluctantly takes a celestial bronze sword and a ukulele from Harley. They receive farewells from Will, Nico, and other campers, who give them good-luck charms. A storm rages as they enter the forest, making their journey difficult. Meg stumbles upon the shattered shell of a myrmeke, a giant ant, causing Apollo to fear the presence of an entire colony. They press on as the forest grows warmer and more humid, signaling something unusual ahead.
Chapter 23 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Encounter with the Geyser God
Apollo and Meg find two geysers and meet Pete, a minor forest god obsessed with marketing. He mentions that his partner, Paulie, disappeared while searching for the Grove of Dodona. Meg insists on finding the oracle, but Pete worries that it will scare away tourists. When asked about the missing demigods, Pete reveals that three armed men—one of whom they called "emperor"—were also searching for the grove. Just as Pete is about to reveal more information, three enormous myrmekes appear, drawn by Pete’s bright advertising lights, putting Apollo and Meg in grave danger.
Chapter 24 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Battle Against the Myrmekes
Three giant ants attack, displaying their resilience and deadly nature. Meg fights skillfully, but Apollo, lacking combat experience, barely manages to defend himself. His sword corrodes under the creatures' acidic saliva. Desperate, he breaks his vow by playing the ukulele and singing Sweet Caroline, confusing one of the ants and causing it to fall into the boiling geyser. However, Meg is captured by the myrmekes and dragged into their nest. Apollo, dazed from a head wound, is unable to stop them and collapses in the mud, realizing he has failed and that Meg is in grave danger.
Chapter 25 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Apollo’s Oath to Save Meg
Desperate, Apollo searches for any trace of Meg and swears to find her. Pete reveals that the myrmekes' nest is the only entrance to the Grove of Dodona, confirming that Paulie vanished there as well. He also mentions that the three armed men in the forest spoke Latin and referred to their leader as "emperor," leading Apollo to realize that the Triumvirate of emperors is behind the oracle. Exhausted, he collapses and is found by a woman wearing a tiara and tattoos, accompanied by lions. Apollo recognizes her as Rhea, the Titaness mother of the gods, who tells him they need to talk.
Chapter 26 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Emperors, Here?
Apollo wakes up after his encounter with the myrmekes and finds himself face to face with Rhea, the mother of the Olympian gods. She explains that the cruelest Roman emperors never truly disappeared; instead, they have been operating in the shadows, building their own empire and amassing power for centuries. Nero, the most cunning and ruthless of them, leads the Triumvirate. Rhea warns that the oracles are under their control and that the only hope lies in the Grove of Dodona, an ancient oracle that has just reawakened in the forest. Still wounded, Apollo worries about Meg, but Rhea urges him to rest and recover before continuing. As aid, she gives him wind chimes to strengthen Dodona’s voice and warns of an imminent attack on Camp Half-Blood. Before Apollo can ask more questions, Rhea vanishes, and he stumbles back to camp, collapsing in front of Chiara Benvenuti.
Chapter 27 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – I Apologize for Practically Everything
Apollo has a vision of Hyacinthus, his former love, who warns him about a threat in the “caverns near the blue springs” before fading away. Upon waking in Cabin Seven, he finds Will and Nico, who have been tending to him. Disoriented, Apollo speaks to a potted hyacinth, worrying his friends. Recovering quickly, he reveals that Meg is in danger and that the Roman emperors have returned. He explains that Nero, one of the worst, is behind the attacks and is planning something terrible against the camp. Rejecting Will and Nico’s help, Apollo arms himself with a bow and arrows and sets off alone in search of Meg. He returns to the myrmekes’ nest, relying on his voice to disorient the creatures. Singing with pain and guilt, he manages to advance through the tunnels until he finds traces of Meg.
Chapter 28 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Parenting Tip: Moms, Don’t Let Your Larvae Become Ants
Apollo finds Meg trapped in a sticky substance, surrounded by geraniums she has conjured for protection. Aware that time is running out, she instructs him to use magical seeds to free her. While struggling against the myrmekes, Apollo fires his last arrow to collapse part of the tunnel, crushing several ants. Finally, he throws Meg her rings, allowing her to reclaim her swords and defeat her captor. Before they can escape, the myrmeke queen appears—a colossal creature fiercely protecting her nest of larvae. Meg hesitates to attack, seeing her as a mother giving birth. In a desperate move, Apollo distracts her by rapping a song about his love for his mother, Leto. To their surprise, the queen calms down and lets them pass. Before leaving, Apollo calls her “Mom,” and she seems to accept the title.
Chapter 29 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Nightmares with Torches and a Man in Purple
Apollo and Meg emerge from the myrmekes’ nest into a clearing filled with bones and find the entrance to the Grove of Dodona. However, they are horrified to discover that the missing demigods—including Austin, Kayla, and Paulie, the geyser god—are tied to posts covered in a flammable substance. Before they can react, two massive, tattooed Germani warriors appear, accompanied by Nero himself. Dressed in a luxurious purple suit, the emperor exudes confidence and amusement. He explains that he has returned from obscurity and plans to conquer the world by controlling the oracles. He orders Apollo and Meg to open the grove’s doors for him. Apollo refuses and demands the release of the prisoners. Nero merely laughs, making it clear that he holds all the power. As Apollo struggles to grasp the situation, Meg remains silent and visibly shaken.
Chapter 30 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – I Educate McCaffrey
Apollo is devastated to realize that Meg has betrayed him. She reveals that Nero is her stepfather and has raised her since her father’s death. Confused and manipulated, she believes that the Beast and Nero are separate entities. Nero, with his usual cynicism, mocks Apollo and boasts about his influence over Meg. Despite Apollo’s desperate pleas, Meg orders him to help her open the grove’s doors. Betrayed and out of options, Apollo faces his worst dilemma: obey Meg and hand the oracle over to Nero or resist and doom the prisoners.
Chapter 31 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – The Voices of the Grove of Dodona
Apollo is forced to obey Meg’s order to open the Grove of Dodona, though the trees resist. As he touches their trunks, he feels their energy and focuses on the goddess Rhea, who planted the grove. With Meg’s help, he manages to open the gates of the sacred forest. Inside, they find a circle of young oaks surrounded by a dome of intertwined branches. As they step in, the trees’ voices erupt in a deafening cacophony. Nero, impatiently watching the process, orders Meg to control the voices, but they reveal the truth: the emperor plans to burn the grove. Horrified, Meg confronts her stepfather, who tries to convince her that his plan is necessary to build his empire. When Nero pulls out a box of matches to start the fire, Meg begins to question her loyalty and her true place in the Imperial Household.
Chapter 32 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Meg’s Challenge and Nero’s Fury
As Nero attempts to light the fire, Peaches intervenes, snatching the match and saving the hostages. Summoning her courage, Meg stands against her stepfather and prevents him from carrying out his plan. Nero tries to manipulate her, insisting that his love for her is genuine and that the grove’s destruction is essential. Apollo realizes that Nero uses the figure of "the Beast" as an excuse for his cruelty, tricking Meg into believing he has no control over his own violence. Apollo urges Meg to decide for herself, and in a defiant act, she orders Peaches to take Nero’s matches. Enraged, the emperor commands his guards to capture Meg and set Apollo and Peaches on fire. However, when Meg screams in defiance, the Grove of Dodona responds with a burst of power, knocking Nero and his men down and giving Apollo and Meg a chance to act.
Chapter 33 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – The Prophecy of Dodona and Meg’s Decision
As the grove’s voices intensify, Apollo struggles to stay on his feet. Humming to protect his mind from the chaos, he finds Meg at the base of the central tree, overwhelmed by the prophetic voices. With great effort, he convinces her to hang the wind chimes on a high branch to channel the grove’s message. When she does, the forest calms, and a single prophetic voice delivers a chilling quatrain about Apollo’s fate. Terrified by its meaning, Apollo tries to explain the prophecy’s significance to Meg, but she, shaken by everything that has happened, decides to break her bond with him. She insists that Nero is not the Beast and that she can reason with him, refusing to accept the truth. Despite Apollo’s pleas, Meg abandons him, disappearing into the trees with Peaches. Heartbroken, Apollo finds a wooden arrow on the ground—an omen that his destiny is far from over.
Chapter 34 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – The Urgent Return to Camp Half-Blood
Apollo returns with the rescued demigods and sets them free. Among them, Austin and Kayla are confused but grateful. As they prepare to return to camp, Apollo recalls Nero’s mention of a "demolition brigade" and realizes the true danger: Nero’s Colossus is on its way to destroy Camp Half-Blood. Facing skepticism from the demigods, Apollo explains that the statue is an ancient automaton brought to life with imperial magic. Suddenly, the ground trembles, and a distant roar confirms that the threat is real. With no time for a conventional return, Apollo devises a risky plan: summoning the myrmeke queen to transport them by air. Singing to get her attention, he manages to lure her and her soldiers from the ground. Though terrified by the idea of flying on giant ants, the demigods climb aboard and take off toward camp, dreading what they might find upon arrival.
Chapter 35 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – The Attack of Nero’s Colossus
From the air, Apollo and his team watch in horror as the massive bronze statue marches along the beach toward Camp Half-Blood. The Athena Parthenos and the Golden Fleece attempt to repel the attack, but the camp’s magical barrier weakens with each of the Colossus’s strikes. Chiron and the other campers try to stop it with arrows and spears, but the automaton remains virtually unscathed. Apollo realizes that the Colossus is an idealized version of Nero, sculpted to resemble a sun god. Knowing that the camp won’t withstand much longer, Apollo convinces the myrmeke queen to perform a low-altitude flight over the statue to distract it. He shouts, proclaiming himself as the true Apollo, drawing the Colossus’s attention. However, the statue responds with a devastating attack from its helm, striking the ants' wings and sending them crashing onto the beach. Stunned but unharmed, Apollo realizes that the Colossus is entirely focused on him—and that if he doesn’t find a way to defeat it, Camp Half-Blood will be destroyed.
Chapter 36 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Attack on the Colossus of Rhodes
While the demigods attempt to distract the Colossus, Apollo, Kayla, and Austin climb into Sherman Yang’s chariot with the intent to bring down the statue. Apollo decides to use his last arrow to infect the giant with a plague, but the arrow begins to speak, revealing that it is made from Dodona’s sacred wood. The Arrow of Dodona warns him not to use it for shooting, but Apollo has no other choice. Meanwhile, Nico di Angelo uses his power to reposition the campers strategically but collapses from the effort. Will Solace tends to him while Austin and Kayla help Apollo retrieve an arrow from the Colossus’s armpit. However, Kayla injures herself in the process, and her blood splashes onto the statue. With only one viable arrow and immense pressure on his shoulders, Apollo attempts to summon the plague, but his magic is too strong, unintentionally weakening his own allies.
Chapter 37 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – Percy Jackson to the Rescue
Percy Jackson arrives, riding the hellhound Mrs. O’Leary, and attacks the Colossus, slicing off part of its crown and distracting it. Meanwhile, Apollo struggles to remember how to infuse the arrow with a plague without harming everyone around him. With the help of the Arrow of Dodona, he successfully completes the enchantment, but the venom is so potent that it affects Austin and Kayla, making them ill. With no one left to steer the chariot, the pegasi panic and nearly crash. Apollo barely regains control in time but loses his bow in the process. Chiron and Percy rally the campers, while Apollo receives a bow from the centaur for the crucial shot. Despite his doubts, Percy encourages him to believe in himself. Finally, Apollo fires the enchanted arrow, causing the Colossus to inhale the plague. The statue begins to sway, and with a powerful sneeze, its head detaches and falls into the sea, ending the battle.
Chapter 38 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – The Aftermath of the Battle
Camp Half-Blood lies in ruins after the fight against the Colossus. Many demigods, including Kayla and Austin, suffer from the pollen plague Apollo invoked, forcing Will Solace to care for the sick. Percy helps relocate the Colossus’s remains using whales and hippocampi so Poseidon can repurpose it as a garden statue. Despite the victory, Apollo feels guilty for the destruction and decides he must leave camp to face the emperors’ threat. Before dawn, he climbs Half-Blood Hill, contemplating his future and doubting his abilities. Rachel Dare and Percy find him and convince him not to give up, reminding him of the importance of his mission. As he reveals the prophecy he received in the Grove of Dodona, Percy realizes it hints at Leo Valdez’s imminent return. Moments later, Leo descends from the sky on Festus, with Calypso at his side.
Chapter 39 Summary – The Hidden Oracle – The Return of Leo Valdez
Leo is greeted with a mix of joy and punches from the campers, who scold him for his long absence. He and Calypso explain that they tried to make contact but were blocked by the Triumvirate. After discussing with Rachel and Percy, Leo decides to assist Apollo on his quest. Calypso, now mortal and without her powers, also joins the mission. Chiron confirms that the emperors have divided the United States into three territories and that the next oracle may be located in the Midwest, possibly Indiana. During dinner, Apollo silently bids farewell to the camp, grateful for the family he has found. Finally, he accepts that he cannot do this alone and prepares to leave with Leo and Calypso, determined to find Meg and confront the emperors.

FAQs – Chapter by Chapter Summary – The Hidden Oracle
Why does Zeus punish Apollo by turning him into a mortal in The Hidden Oracle?
Zeus punishes Apollo not just for past disobedience, but to humble him through human fragility. Stripped of his powers and forced into the body of Lester Papadopoulos, Apollo must endure the pain, helplessness, and emotional vulnerability of mortality. This punishment is designed to force Apollo to rethink what it truly means to be divine—not through dominance, but through compassion, growth, and sacrifice. The exile becomes a crucible that breaks his pride and redefines his identity.
What role does Meg McCaffrey play in Apollo’s transformation?
Meg serves as Apollo’s unwanted mentor and moral compass. Her erratic behavior, hidden trauma, and deep connection to nature challenge everything Apollo once valued. She's not just a plot device—she's a test of his patience, humility, and capacity to care. Her betrayal crushes him, and her strength inspires him. Through her, Apollo learns that loyalty can't be demanded—it must be earned, often painfully. Meg doesn’t just lead him through forests—she leads him into uncomfortable truths about himself.
Why is the Grove of Dodona so important in The Hidden Oracle?
The Grove of Dodona is a surviving oracle immune to Python’s and Nero’s control, making it a critical stronghold in the war over prophecy. Its sentient trees hold ancient knowledge and warnings that could disrupt the Triumvirate’s schemes. For Apollo, reclaiming the Grove isn’t just about restoring prophecy—it’s a chance at redemption. For Nero, burning it means silencing resistance forever. The Grove is the book’s spiritual battleground, where loyalty, destiny, and truth collide.
What is Nero’s true goal in The Hidden Oracle?
Nero wants absolute control over fate by monopolizing all ancient oracles. His corporate empire, Triumvirate Holdings, hides a darker plan: to reshape the world through propaganda disguised as prophecy. By destroying or enslaving every oracle, Nero hopes to erase free will and build an empire of manipulation. He exploits Meg’s trust and masks his cruelty behind a paternal façade, but his endgame is domination. His obsession with fire and theatrical control is both literal and symbolic of his ambition.
How do Apollo’s demigod children shape his journey as a mortal?
Apollo’s children—Kayla, Austin, and Will—mirror the responsibilities he always avoided as a god. Their concern, vulnerability, and strength force him to reckon with what it means to be a parent, a protector, and a human. Their disappearances terrify him not just because of danger—but because he finally cares. Their support reminds him that true power doesn’t come from being worshipped, but from connection, courage, and accountability. They aren’t side characters—they’re anchors that keep him grounded.
