Chapter 1 Summary – The House of Hades – The Attack of the Mountain Gods

Hazel struggles to stay calm as the Argo II faces a third attack from the numina montanum, mountain gods hurling massive boulders from the Apennines. Nico falls with the broken sail but survives thanks to Hazel. Leo maneuvers with difficulty, firing explosive spheres that barely manage to distract the enemies. Seeing the open Italian countryside, Hazel remembers her home at Camp Jupiter and longs for Frank. However, the danger does not disappear. Nico and Hazel suspect that their presence and the Athena Parthenos are attracting the numina, preventing them from crossing the mountains. Without Percy, the sea is not a safe option. Hazel wonders if her father, Pluto, will show her a path. Then, a movement in the distance fills her with hope: Arion, her swift horse, has returned.

Chapter 2 Summary – The House of Hades – Arion’s Call

Upon landing, Hazel rushes to embrace Arion, who seems eager to take her to an unknown destination. Leo and Nico watch her with concern, especially when a dark tornado rises over nearby ruins. Hazel feels that her father is sending her a sign and decides to follow it. Arion gallops at full speed toward the storm, leaving the Argo II behind. At the top of a hill, the dome of black clouds surrounds an ancient temple. The Mist swirls with an unsettling magical energy. Hazel faces the decision to enter the storm alone or return to her friends. Without hesitation, she spurs Arion forward and enters the tempest.

Chapter 3 Summary – The House of Hades – The Encounter with Hecate

Hazel finds herself in the eye of the storm, a space where color has disappeared and the Mist floats like living smoke. In the center, a woman appears from three different directions, splitting and merging as she moves. It is Hecate, the goddess of magic. Accompanied by a black dog and a weasel, Hecate reveals that Hazel’s mother possessed real powers. She shows Hazel three visions: a war between demigods, the Argo II destroyed, and Percy and Annabeth on the brink of death. The goddess offers an alternative: a secret route north through a forgotten passage. However, Hazel must master the Mist to survive the House of Hades and face an enemy she cannot defeat with her sword.

Chapter 4 Summary – The House of Hades – The Path of Magic

Hecate warns Hazel that her true power lies in manipulating the Mist. To prove it, she transforms her dog into a cat with a simple gesture. Hazel hesitates, but the goddess insists that she must learn if she wants to save her friends. Additionally, she warns of a witch in the House of Hades that Hazel can only defeat with magic. Hazel accepts the challenge and decides to take the northern route, forging her own destiny. Upon returning to the Argo II, she tells Leo and Nico the essentials, omitting the most terrifying visions. They must travel quickly and find two dwarves in Bologna who possess a treasure that will help in their mission. Though fearful, Hazel knows that moving forward is her only option.

Chapter 5 Summary – The House of Hades – The Fall into Tartarus

Annabeth and Percy plummet uncontrollably through the abyss of Tartarus, clinging tightly to each other. Annabeth tries to estimate how long they have been falling, recalling Hesiod’s prophecy about nine days of descent. The heat increases, and the air fills with sulfur. When the darkness turns reddish, Annabeth glimpses the infernal landscape: jagged mountains, flaming chasms, and a black river cutting through the land. Terrified, she points out the river to Percy, hoping he can use his power to cushion their impact. At the last second, Percy summons a geyser of water that envelops them before they hit the ground.

Chapter 6 Summary – The House of Hades – The River of Lamentations

Annabeth crashes into the freezing waters of the Cocytus and feels overwhelming sorrow dragging her into darkness. The river’s voice urges her to surrender, but Percy grabs her and forces her to swim. With great effort, they reach the shore, gasping on a ground of black crystals. The air is acidic, the water pure despair, and everything in Tartarus seems designed to kill. Percy is trembling, and Annabeth, injured, assesses their situation: she has lost her dagger, her backpack, and all supplies. But she has Percy, and that gives her strength to go on. As they study the terrain, they see Arachne’s wrecked chariot on the beach and tracks indicating that the monstrous spider has survived. Annabeth’s only hope is to find the Phlegethon, the River of Fire, in the hopes that its flames might give them a chance to survive in the hell they have fallen into.

Chapter 7 Summary – The House of Hades – The River of Fire

Percy and Annabeth descend a slippery cliff toward the Phlegethon, enduring scorching heat while sharp rocks wound their hands. Percy tries to joke to ease the tension, but Annabeth can barely respond. Once on the shore, they discover that the water is liquid fire—the only way to endure Tartarus. Annabeth drinks first, enduring the unbearable burning but feeling energy return to her body. Percy, weak and on the verge of collapse, struggles to swallow the searing liquid but gradually regains his strength. They decide that their only option is to follow the river’s course, hoping it will lead them to the Doors of Death. However, just as they begin to move forward, Arachne, having survived her fall, pounces on Annabeth. Percy reacts in time and destroys her, but Annabeth realizes that in Tartarus, even a monster’s death may not be final.

Chapter 8 Summary – The House of Hades – The Shadows of Tartarus

Exhausted, Annabeth and Percy trudge along the Phlegethon’s shore when they hear voices. Hiding behind rocks, they spot a group of empousai, including Kelli, an old enemy of Percy. The vampire boasts about her return and swears revenge, demanding Percy’s blood for herself. Annabeth struggles to contain her anger, remembering how Kelli manipulated Luke in the past. Unaware of their presence, the creatures head toward the Doors of Death, confirming the direction they must take. Although the idea of following a group of monsters is terrifying, Annabeth knows it is their only hope of finding an exit from Tartarus. Percy nods grimly, understanding they have no other choice. With caution, they begin to track the empousai, knowing that any mistake could mean their ultimate demise in the underworld.

Chapter 9 Summary – The House of Hades – The Secret of the Athena Parthenos

Aboard the Argo II, Leo struggles with frustration as he tries to uncover the secrets of the Athena Parthenos. He believes the statue holds hidden powers, but its magic eludes him. While examining its mechanisms, guilt over Percy and Annabeth’s fall torments him. Exhausted, he falls asleep and has a terrifying nightmare: Gaea warns him of his imminent death, and a giant shrouded in shadows chases him. He wakes up in a destroyed Camp Half-Blood, where he sees Octavian possessed by Gaea’s voice, announcing that the Romans are marching against the Greeks. At the top of Half-Blood Hill, a woman with hateful eyes gives him a fatal choice: leap into the void or enter a dark cave. Before he can decide, the giant captures him. He wakes with a start, clutching the statue of Nike, just as Jason calls him to discuss new information about the House of Hades.

Chapter 10 Summary – The House of Hades – The Phantom Month

Leo joins Jason and the others in the dining area, where Nico reveals details about the House of Hades, an ancient temple used to communicate with the dead. He also warns that the giant Clytius, Hecate’s opposite, awaits them there. Leo shares his dream and recognizes the woman as the witch Hazel must defeat. Jason tries to keep morale high, but Frank mentions that July is the “ghost month” in Chinese tradition, coinciding with their mission at the House of Hades. As they process the information, the Argo II takes a hit, and the enchanted walls display something impossible: a pair of mischievous dwarves have invaded the deck, tied up Piper and Hedge, and are looting the ship. When Leo sees them stealing his Archimedes sphere, he jumps from his seat, ready to reclaim his belongings and face the mysterious thieves.

Chapter 11 Summary – The House of Hades – The Attack of the Cercopes

Leo and his friends are caught off guard on the Argo II by two mischievous dwarves, Acmon and Passalos, known as the Cercopes. While Hazel stays behind to help Nico, Leo, Jason, and Frank rush to the deck, where they find Piper and Coach Hedge tied up. The dwarves, expert thieves, ransack the ship, stealing Leo’s Archimedes sphere and his tool belt before escaping. Jason and Leo chase them to the city of Bologna, tracking them to a fountain with a statue of Neptune. However, it’s a trap. The statue comes to life and binds Jason with golden ropes, suspending him in the air. Forced to continue alone, Leo charges after the Cercopes to recover his belongings, engaging in a cat-and-mouse chase through the city streets, determined not to let them escape with his precious tools.

Chapter 12 Summary – The House of Hades – Leo vs. the Cercopes

Leo chases the Cercopes across the rooftops of Bologna, picking up pieces of his tool belt as they drop them. With no help from Jason or the crew, he must rely on his own ingenuity. Noticing that the dwarves have climbed a leaning tower, he decides to follow. With no resources, he enters a grocery store, buys ingredients, and improvises homemade explosives. He bribes a guard with a bag of Fonzies and climbs the tower. At the top, he finds the Cercopes playing poker with his tool belt. He offers them a deal, but when they approach, he throws one of his makeshift grenades. Amid smoke and explosions, Leo retrieves his belt, the Archimedes sphere, and other stolen objects. Jason arrives just in time, breaking a window with a lightning bolt. With the Cercopes captured, Leo comes up with a new plan: sending them to New York to create chaos among the Romans.

Chapter 13 Summary – The House of Hades – Lost in Tartarus

Percy and Annabeth continue through Tartarus, following the Phlegethon River. Though the environment is suffocating and treacherous, the river’s burning water helps them regain strength. They watch as the empousai feast on a fallen monster, realizing the danger they face. Keeping their distance, they follow the she-demons through the hostile landscape, avoiding fissures and toxic vapors. The terrain grows more treacherous, filled with blisters that burst open, releasing grotesque creatures. In the distance, they see the confluence of the Phlegethon and another river, likely the Cocytus, with a black mist covering the horizon. There is no escape. Their only option is to move forward. Percy wishes he could fly to avoid the dangerous terrain, but Annabeth reminds him that winged creatures lurk above. With no other choice, they begin a treacherous descent down a steep cliff, aware that their destination is near and their hope is fragile.

Chapter 14 Summary – The House of Hades – The Deadly Descent

Percy and Annabeth cautiously descend the cliff, careful not to alert the empousai. Exhausted, Annabeth asks for a break, and Percy comforts her, reaffirming their unbreakable bond. As they catch their breath, they talk about the Lethe River and Iapetus, the Titan Percy renamed Bob. The conversation gives them a sliver of hope before they resume their descent. Finally, they reach the bottom and discover that the ground resembles a massive living skin, as if Tartarus itself is aware of their presence. A newborn monster is devoured by a reptilian creature before it even has a chance to move, reminding them that everything here is prey to something worse. With no turning back, they cross the plain, covered in black trees and swollen membranes. When they notice suspicious movement, Percy realizes a fatal mistake: they’ve lost sight of the empousai, and now they are surrounded in an ambush.

Chapter 15 Summary – The House of Hades – Ambushed in Tartarus

The empousai, led by Kelli, close in on Percy and Annabeth, ready to devour them. Percy recalls how dangerous Kelli was in their last battle and knows that fighting five of them is suicide. With no weapons and no escape, Annabeth uses her intelligence to manipulate the empousai, planting doubts about Kelli’s loyalty. Her words momentarily work, but Kelli executes one of her own followers to reassert control. Left with no choice, Percy and Annabeth fight, but they are outmatched. Percy manages to take down one vampire, but another sinks her fangs into his neck, weakening him. Annabeth, weaponless, fights desperately. Just when all seems lost, a massive shadow falls from the sky, and a war cry echoes through Tartarus. A Titan has entered the battle, changing the course of their fate entirely.

Chapter 16 Summary – The House of Hades – The Return of Bob

Percy and Annabeth think they are hallucinating when a massive silver figure crushes Kelli. It is Bob, the janitor Titan, who saves them with his broom, now transformed into a spear. Seeing Annabeth injured, Bob heals her with a touch, surprising Percy with his kindness. The Titan remembers his name and is happy to have heard his friend’s call. However, he warns that something else is approaching. Percy sees no enemies, but Bob insists they must move quickly. Annabeth, still dazed, tries to understand how Bob found them, but the Titan avoids the question and leads them down a hidden path. For the first time since arriving in Tartarus, Percy feels they have a real chance to survive. However, Bob’s warning about “them” leaves him uneasy. They know they must trust him, but they cannot let their guard down.

Chapter 17 Summary – The House of Hades – The Catoblepas of Venice

Frank wakes up transformed into a snake, unable to remember how it happened. Though he manages to return to his human form, the voices of Mars and Ares continue to torment him. Climbing to the deck of the Argo II, he discovers that the city of Venice is overrun with strange, shaggy creatures called catoblepas. Jason and Piper try to remain calm, but Coach Hedge suggests attacking immediately. Nico explains that these monsters have a deadly gaze and poisonous breath. Frank, Hazel, and Nico decide to enter the city to find the owner of a book that may help them on their mission. As they walk through the narrow streets, Frank feels anxious and out of place, but Hazel reassures him by holding his hand. The city, beautiful yet chaotic, is teeming with tourists and more catoblepas than they expected. Something about the atmosphere unsettles Nico, who senses restless spirits and warns them to be cautious.

Chapter 18 Summary – The House of Hades – The Attack of the Catoblepas

As they explore Venice, Nico guides Frank and Hazel toward the Black House, but Hazel feels uneasy. Nico senses the presence of lemures, vengeful spirits, and warns that the city is full of them. Just as they attempt to move forward, Hazel stumbles, attracting the attention of the catoblepas. The creatures growl and surround the demigods, but Frank steps in to distract them. Suddenly, poisonous roots sprout from the ground, feeding the beasts. Frank tries to transform into a rhinoceros but fails. Finally, he turns into a lion and attacks the monsters, reducing several to dust. However, one releases its toxic breath directly onto Hazel, causing her to collapse unconscious. Desperate, Frank tries to carry her back to the Argo II, but a mysterious voice offers help. A young man with curly hair appears, claiming to know the cure for the poison.

Chapter 19 Summary – The House of Hades – The God of Agriculture

Frank and Nico follow the young man into the Black House, where he reveals himself as Triptolemus, a minor god of agriculture. Frank, furious over Hazel’s condition, demands that he heal her, but Triptolemus scorns children of Hades and turns Nico into a corn plant. Desperate, Frank bargains with the god, offering him the leather-bound book they recovered in Bologna. Triptolemus accepts the gift but remains hesitant to help. Frank realizes the god’s real problem—his chariot is broken, and he needs a snake to pull it. Triptolemus mocks him, but Frank, guided by the voices of Mars and Ares, recalls the legend of Cadmus and a way to acquire a snake. Determined to save his friends, he prepares for a deadly challenge: luring all the catoblepas in Venice into battle to earn his father’s blessing.

Chapter 20 Summary – The House of Hades – Frank the Warrior

Frank sets his risky plan into motion. He provokes the catoblepas through the streets of Venice, dodging their venom and drawing them toward a bridge. He fights fiercely, slaying hundreds of monsters in a battle frenzy. At the height of the fight, he calls upon Mars and Ares, who finally grant him the snake he needs. Just then, his father appears, congratulating him and assuring him that he has proven himself a true leader. However, the presence of both Mars and Ares causes a violent explosion, forcing Frank to flee with his newly acquired serpent. He returns to the Black House, threatens Triptolemus, and forces him to keep his promise. Hazel recovers, and Nico returns to his normal form. Frank realizes he has changed—he is taller, stronger, and more confident. Triptolemus finally provides them with key information about the House of Hades and how to survive its dangers. The mission continues, but Frank is no longer the same.

Chapter 21 Summary – The House of Hades – An Unexpected Ally in Tartarus

Annabeth and Percy push forward through Tartarus, enduring the poisonous air and their wounds. Bob, the Titan with erased memories, leads them with his broom and a surprisingly friendly attitude. Despite his scruffy appearance, he proves to be their best chance at survival. They follow the course of the Phlegethon, drinking its fire to stay alive. Annabeth feels uneasy trusting a Titan, fearing he may regain his old identity as Iapetus. They reach a fallen sanctuary of Hermes, a refuge in the abyss. There, Bob warns them that giants and defeated Titans are tracking them, making their rest urgent. Annabeth fights exhaustion and paranoia but eventually surrenders to sleep while Percy keeps watch. In her nightmare, she relives Thalia’s death and receives a message from Athena through Reyna, instructing her that the Romans must deliver her to her destination.

Chapter 22 Summary – The House of Hades – Annabeth’s Message

Annabeth wakes up terrified from her nightmare and finds that Percy and Bob have discovered food at Hermes' altar, left as offerings from the mortal world. They feel comforted eating food from Camp Half-Blood, but Bob warns that their pursuers are closing in. Remembering her vision, Annabeth devises a risky plan: sending a message to Rachel Dare through the altar. She writes her note on a napkin using Riptide’s ink and burns it, hoping it will appear in the mortal world. Satisfied with her attempt, she prepares to continue their journey. Bob mentions the possibility of using the Death Mist to hide from monsters, but accessing it means confronting a mysterious lady. Percy and Annabeth hesitate, but urgency forces them to take the only option available. With Bob guiding them, they step deeper into Tartarus in search of answers.

Chapter 23 Summary – The House of Hades – The Encounter with Hyperion

Annabeth and Percy follow Bob through Tartarus, where the terrain seems to pull them deeper and deeper. Exhausted, Annabeth stumbles onto a translucent bubble containing Hyperion, the fiery Titan Percy defeated in Manhattan. Annabeth recalls the terror of that battle and worries when she sees Bob watching his brother with a conflicted expression. Percy cleverly reinforces the idea that some Titans are good and others are bad, convincing Bob that he is different. Finally, Bob makes a decision and destroys Hyperion’s regeneration bubble, delaying his return. Annabeth feels uneasy about how Percy manipulated the situation, relying too much on Bob. However, danger still looms, and they must keep moving. Bob, now more certain of his identity, leads them toward the Death Mist.

Chapter 24 Summary – The House of Hades – The Curses of Tartarus

As they advance, Annabeth feels Tartarus affecting her mind. Bob tells them they must find “the lady” to obtain the Death Mist but avoids saying her name. Suddenly, Annabeth notices the ground vibrating. Before they can react, creatures drop from the trees: the Arai, living spirits of curses. These winged, wrinkled beings with metal claws approach with a dire threat—they seek revenge for every monster Percy and Annabeth have ever slain. Annabeth realizes that each Arai represents a curse placed upon them by past enemies, and now they must face them directly. With no escape, they prepare to fight, but Annabeth is overwhelmed by despair. She knows that the Arai do not just attack physically; they also bring the weight of every past kill. Surrounded by the enemy, battle is inevitable.

Chapter 25 Summary – The House of Hades – The Secret of the Mist

Aboard the Argo II, Hazel struggles with dizziness as the ship sails through the Adriatic. Galantis, Hecate’s weasel, follows her everywhere, making her suspect that her trial is near. Meanwhile, Hazel catches Coach Hedge sending a mysterious Iris message, but he refuses to explain. Worried, she confides in Frank, who now looks stronger and more confident after his victory in Venice. Frank asks about Nico, who remains distant after his time in Tartarus. Hazel feels the weight of Hecate’s mission pressing on her but does not understand how to control the Mist. Her dreams grow darker, filled with warnings about Percy and Annabeth’s peril. As she contemplates her test, the Argo II suddenly lurches, signaling that something has gone wrong. Hazel senses that the moment to prove her power has arrived.

Chapter 26 Summary – The House of Hades – The Cliff Bandit’s Trap

Hazel and the Argo II crew are attacked by a gigantic turtle in the Adriatic Sea. The creature, the size of an island, begins smashing the ship’s oars, preventing their escape. Leo struggles to maneuver while Jason, Frank, and Hedge try to attack the beast, but its shell and skin are impenetrable. Desperate, Hazel summons Arion, and with Piper, they create a distraction to lure the turtle away while the Argo II sails toward a narrow passage between cliffs. Once in shallow waters, they think they are safe—until an arrow strikes the ship’s mast. From atop the cliff, a bandit named Sciron threatens them with a deadly choice: climb up and hand over all their valuables or be killed. With no other option, Hazel and Jason decide to confront the thief at the top, unaware of what awaits them.

Chapter 27 Summary – The House of Hades – Hazel’s Trick and the Curse of the Mist

Hazel and Jason cautiously climb the treacherous stone staircase carved into the cliff as Sciron watches from above. During the ascent, Hazel feels the weight of her mission and the urgency of mastering the Mist, but she still struggles to control it. Upon reaching the top, Sciron introduces himself as a son of Poseidon and a legendary bandit, threatening them with celestial bronze flintlock pistols. He demands the Athena Parthenos statue, but Hazel attempts to negotiate, offering him treasures summoned from the earth. Though he accepts the gold, the thief demands a final show of submission: washing his feet as a sign of respect. Hazel recalls that Sciron killed his victims by kicking them off the cliff to be devoured by his giant turtle. She realizes that her only hope is to use the Mist to deceive him, making him see what he expects. With Jason’s life at risk, Hazel devises a daring plan.

Chapter 28 Summary – The House of Hades – The Fall of Sciron

Hazel puts her strategy into action, convincing Sciron that Jason is vulnerable and willing to obey. Jason pretends to wash the bandit’s foot while Hazel uses the Mist to alter his perception. When Sciron kicks, Jason appears to fall toward the turtle, but in reality, he rises into the air, avoiding the trap. Then, Hazel subtly shifts Sciron’s orientation without him noticing, making him believe he still has the cliff behind him when, in fact, he now faces the sea. When the bandit tries to kick Hazel, he loses his balance and plummets. The confused turtle catches him midair, swallowing him whole and ending his threat. Exhausted, Hazel realizes she has wielded the Mist in a way she never had before. Just then, a familiar voice startles her—her father, Pluto, has appeared to deliver a crucial warning about the dangers awaiting her at the House of Hades.

Chapter 29 Summary – The House of Hades – The Curses of Tartarus

In Tartarus, Percy, Annabeth, and Bob are surrounded by the Arai, vengeful spirits representing the curses of monsters Percy has slain in the past. Each time they kill one of these creatures, they suffer a curse. Percy is struck and feels unbearable pain in his chest, as if pierced by an arrow, reliving Geryon’s death. Annabeth, after slaying an Arai, is rendered completely blind—a curse from Polyphemus. With every attack, the spirits weigh them down further, weakening them. Percy realizes that every monster he has ever defeated may now be seeking vengeance. Bob, however, appears immune to the curses since he has already been punished by losing his memory. The Arai manipulate him, reminding him that Percy was the one who erased his past. Conflicted and hurt, Bob does not stop the creatures, leaving Percy and Annabeth vulnerable to a final, deadly assault.

Chapter 30 Summary – The House of Hades – Percy and Annabeth on the Edge of the Abyss

Percy drags Annabeth away from the attack, guiding her through Tartarus' dark forest while she remains blind. In their escape, they find themselves at the edge of a cliff with no way forward, surrounded by the Arai. Annabeth is struck by another curse and panics, feeling utterly alone and abandoned. Percy doesn’t understand what’s happening until the Arai reveal that he is being punished for leaving behind an innocent soul. At that moment, he remembers Calypso and realizes that her curse has come upon him. Weakened and consumed by guilt, he sees no option but to fight to the end. Enraged, he unleashes all his fury, attacking the Arai with everything he has, determined to protect Annabeth at any cost.

Chapter 31 Summary – The House of Hades – The Curses of the Arai

Percy fights fiercely against the Arai, striking them down with Riptide, but each time he destroys one, a new curse falls upon him. The pain is unbearable—he feels stabbing wounds, burns, and a chilling sensation in his blood. Fatigue overwhelms him, and as he reaches for Annabeth, an Arai bites his thigh, intensifying his torment. He remembers Gaea’s warning about his death and realizes that the Gorgon’s poison inside him is killing him. The Arai mock his suffering, urging him to surrender. On the verge of collapse, Percy understands that Annabeth needs him and clings to his resolve. Knowing that Bob may be their only hope, he calls out to him in desperation, doubting that the Titan will hear. His vision distorts, and Tartarus reveals its true horror. As the Arai celebrate his impending death, Percy apologizes to Bob, begging him to protect Annabeth.

Chapter 32 Summary – The House of Hades – Bob and Percy’s Salvation

Bob storms into the battle, wielding his broom as a deadly weapon and reducing the Arai to dust in seconds. Percy, barely conscious, sees Annabeth stumbling near a precipice and screams in panic. Bob rescues her and brings her to Percy, restoring her sight with a simple touch. Annabeth, horrified, holds Percy as he struggles to stay conscious. Bob examines his wounds and concludes that the curses and poison are too severe to heal in Tartarus. Annabeth insists on finding a cure, but the Titan warns that Tartarus only strengthens monsters, never demigods. Suddenly, a thunderous roar shakes the ground—Polybotis, Poseidon’s giant enemy, is approaching. Annabeth resolves to move forward with or without Bob, but the Titan agrees to guide them. With renewed hope, he reveals that there is a giant who might be able to help them find a solution.

Chapter 33 Summary – The House of Hades – Rachel and Grover’s Proposal to the Romans

Jason dreams of Reyna and the Roman demigods gathered on a rooftop in New York. Rachel Dare and Grover Underwood appear with an urgent message: Annabeth has found the Athena Parthenos and asks Reyna to return it to Camp Half-Blood to prevent war. Octavian is suspicious, believing it to be a Greek trap, but Rachel insists that Annabeth managed to send the note from Tartarus. They also reveal that the harpy Ella has memorized the Sibylline Books, causing tension among the Romans. Grover warns that Gaea is awakening worldwide and will strike demigod camps first. Reyna, despite Octavian’s objections, decides to retrieve the Athena Parthenos as Annabeth requested. Before departing, she mentions that if Jason follows his instincts, he will pass through a crucial location on his way to the House of Hades. Furious, Octavian secretly begins plotting his own plans in her absence.

Chapter 34 Summary – The House of Hades – Jason and Reyna’s Vision

Jason awakens falling into the ocean after losing consciousness mid-flight. Piper saves him using her charm-speak, helping him regain control of the winds just in time. Back on the Argo II, he shares his dream with the team, explaining Reyna’s mission. Piper wonders how she will find them, but Jason remembers that Reyna mentioned a key destination: the city of Split, Croatia. He decides to head there to leave her a message. Meanwhile, Nico mentions that Split is home to Diocletian’s Palace, the last demigod to rule Rome. According to legend, his scepter can summon legions of ghosts, a power that could aid them in the final battle. Determined, Jason convinces the group to make a brief stop to search for the scepter. Nico insists on accompanying him, as only he can communicate with the dead. Jason, slightly uneasy about traveling alone with Nico, agrees. They arrive in Split and prepare for their next mission.

Chapter 35 Summary – The House of Hades – The Encounter with Favonius

In Split, Jason and Nico explore the city until they spot a winged man buying an ice cream. As they approach, the figure vanishes into the air, leaving a trail of golden wind that leads them to Diocletian’s Palace. Jason lifts Nico into the ruins, where they find an ancient peristyle and an entrance to the underground chambers. Inside, they discover a bust of Diocletian, where Jason leaves his message for Reyna. Suddenly, the winged man reappears, revealing himself as Favonius, the god of the west wind. He informs them that Diocletian’s scepter is no longer there—his master, Cupid, has taken it. Favonius warns Nico that he must face Cupid and confront a painful truth. Jason, not fully understanding, tries to reassure him, but Nico remains tense. With no other choice, they accept the challenge, and Favonius transports them to meet the god of love.

Chapter 36 Summary – The House of Hades – Cupid’s Challenge

Jason and Nico arrive at the ruins of Salona, where Favonius leaves them in the presence of Cupid. Jason does not expect the god of love to be so cruel, but he soon sees his true nature—a relentless force that demands absolute truth. Cupid attacks Nico, forcing him to confront his greatest fear. Amid invisible assaults and exploding arrows, Jason witnesses visions of Nico’s past, understanding his pain and isolation. At last, Cupid compels Nico to confess his deepest secret: he was in love with Percy Jackson. Jason supports him without judgment, but Nico, furious and ashamed, continues to deny his need for companionship. Cupid vanishes, leaving behind Diocletian’s scepter, which is needed to summon Roman legions. Jason tries to console Nico, but he remains tormented. With the scepter in hand, Nico decides to travel through the shadows, avoiding the use of Favonius' winds.

Chapter 37 Summary – The House of Hades – The Swamp of the Peaceful Giant

Annabeth and Bob press forward through Tartarus with Percy on the brink of death. Desperate, Annabeth follows the Titan to a sulfurous mist-covered swamp, where they find the hut of an unusual giant: Damasen, the antithesis of Ares. Despite his towering figure and a home decorated with bones, the giant is not hostile. Bob trusts him to heal Percy, but Annabeth fears they may be placing their last hope in an uncertain ally. Suddenly, a Maeonian drakon appears, roaring and spewing venom. Just as Annabeth prepares to fight, Damasen emerges from his hut, slams the drakon down with a tree, and impales it. Bob assures them they have reached the right place, but Annabeth remains uneasy. As Percy writhes in fevered dreams, Annabeth wonders if Damasen’s help will be enough to save him.

Chapter 38 Summary – The House of Hades – The Forgotten Warrior of Tartarus

Damasen welcomes them into his hut, where Annabeth discovers that the giant is not an enemy but an exile, condemned to Tartarus for aiding mortals. Though bitter, he agrees to prepare a remedy for Percy, using a broth made from herbs. As Percy recovers, Annabeth tells Damasen about their mission, but he remains uninterested in defying his fate. He explains that he was born to oppose Ares, but by rejecting violence, his mother, Gaea, punished him. Every day, the drakon revives and attacks him in an endless cycle. Annabeth tries to convince him to join their fight, but Damasen refuses, believing there is no escape. With every word, Annabeth realizes their mission is more perilous than they had imagined—Tartarus itself is alive and will not allow them to leave.

Chapter 39 Summary – The House of Hades – The Price of Hope

Annabeth tries to persuade Damasen to help them, but the giant insists he cannot abandon his prison. Bob reveals that the only way to reach the Doors of Death is by obtaining the Death Mist from Akhlys, the goddess of poison and despair. Damasen warns that it is a suicidal mission, but Annabeth knows they have no other choice. While Percy sleeps, Annabeth overhears Bob and Damasen discussing fate. Bob admits that he misses the sun and stars but also fears what he has remembered about his past self. Damasen, resigned, offers them shelter for a while but reiterates that he will not join them. Annabeth cannot accept his resignation and urges him to remember her face, to consider another destiny. As the drakon revives and their enemies draw near, Annabeth realizes they must leave before it is too late.

Annabeth wakes to hear Bob and Damasen arguing. The Titan confesses to the giant that he wants to help the demigods but fears his past will doom him. Before Annabeth can press further, the drakon’s roar announces its return, and Percy’s enemies are closing in. Damasen gives them supplies and a drakon bone sword as a final gift to Annabeth. Percy, fully recovered, joins the escape with Annabeth and Bob. Annabeth makes one last attempt to convince Damasen to accompany them, assuring him that he is part of the prophecy and can choose his fate. However, Damasen refuses to leave his home. As they run toward unknown dangers, Annabeth feels they are leaving behind a key piece of their victory. Still, there is no time for more pleas—Tartarus itself is against them, and their journey to the Death Mist has just begun.

Chapter 41 Summary – The House of Hades – The Prophecy of Storm and Fire

Piper, Jason, and Leo discuss the strange icy storm stalking them as the Argo II nears Greece. Nico suspects that Diocletian’s scepter may be affecting the weather, but Piper fears a greater threat. Jason and Nico have been reserved since their mission in Croatia, making Piper uneasy. During their conversation, the daughter of Aphrodite brings up the Prophecy of Seven and suggests that the line “Under storm or fire, the world must fall” might mean that Gaea will be defeated by either Jason or Leo. However, after analyzing another verse about an oath and a final breath, she worries that one of them may have to sacrifice themselves. Just as the discussion grows tense, a wave of ice strikes the ship, freezing Jason in place. Before Piper can react, Leo is hurled into the sky by a gust of wind and vanishes into the clouds.

Chapter 42 Summary – The House of Hades – The Betrayal of Khione

Piper is left alone on deck as an icy wind seals the hatch, trapping her friends inside the ship. Before she can act, Khione and her brothers, Zethes and Calais, appear. The goddess of snow reveals that her father, Boreas, has submitted to Gaea’s power and left her in command. Her mission is to capture the demigods and send them to Quebec as frozen statues. Piper tries to resist using charm-speak, managing only to thaw Jason briefly before Khione freezes him again. To her horror, the goddess reveals that she has sent Leo to a place from which he will never return. Piper struggles to remain calm as Khione mocks her, calling her the weakest member of the group. Zethes throws a northern wind bomb onto the ship, designed to throw it off course and leave Piper stranded. Knowing she must think fast, she realizes she is the only one who can stop this.

Chapter 43 Summary – The House of Hades – Piper’s Secret Skill

Piper uses her wit to manipulate the Boreads, making them doubt Khione’s authority. She convinces them that their sister is a minor goddess who was humiliated in Sonoma, causing Calais and Zethes to laugh and argue. Meanwhile, Piper pretends to have a secret power capable of defeating Gaea. Irritated by the mockery, Khione demands to know what it is. Seizing the distraction, Piper leads them toward the prow, where Festus, the ship’s figurehead, lies dormant. She believes the mechanical dragon’s spirit still lingers inside and tries to awaken it. At first, nothing happens. But when Khione orders her brothers to kill her, Festus roars to life, blasting Zethes and Calais into ashes with a burst of fire. Shocked, Khione attempts to freeze Piper, but the demigod stabs her with her dagger, causing the goddess to explode into a snowstorm. However, the wind bomb is still active, and Piper has mere seconds to stop it before it detonates.

Chapter 44 Summary – The House of Hades – Piper’s Victory and Festus’ Return

Piper manages to grab the wind sphere just before it shatters. The released energy throws her across the deck, but Festus continues to roar and protect her. Finally, the icy storm dissipates, and the Argo II returns to normal. Trembling from the battle, Piper rushes to free her friends. Jason wakes up, dazed, and Piper explains what happened. However, Leo remains missing, and uncertainty about his fate fills her with dread. Despite their victory, Piper cannot shake the fear of what lies ahead. The threat of Khione has been eliminated, but the House of Hades awaits, and she knows they will face even greater dangers.

Chapter 45 Summary – The House of Hades – The Encounter with the Goddess of Poison

In Tartarus, Percy, Annabeth, and Bob struggle through the darkness, growing weaker with each step. Percy tries to hold onto happy thoughts, but the underworld drains all hope from him. Annabeth, exhausted yet determined, reminds him that they are together and must keep going. Suddenly, the darkness opens into a clearing, revealing a wailing figure—Akhlys, the goddess of poison and despair. Her sobs fill Percy with an overwhelming sense of emptiness and defeat. Bob announces that Akhlys can help them, but Percy and Annabeth sense they are about to face something even worse than all they have endured in Tartarus.

Chapter 46 Summary – The House of Hades – The Gift of the Death Mist

Percy and Annabeth encounter Akhlys, the goddess of suffering and poison, a skeletal, pitiful creature sobbing next to Hercules' shield. Bob insists that she can help them since she controls the Death Mist, a power that could hide them from monsters. However, Akhlys mocks them, claiming that death is inevitable. Annabeth cleverly provokes her, challenging her to demonstrate her power. The goddess leads them to the edge of a precipice in Tartarus, where the Death Mist begins to envelop them. Percy and Annabeth see themselves transformed into shadows, appearing as decaying corpses. Just as they begin to adjust, they realize Bob has vanished, and Akhlys has brought them to an even more dangerous place. The goddess laughs, revealing that the Death Mist is not just a disguise but a step toward true death.

Chapter 47 Summary – The House of Hades – The Edge of the Void and Percy’s Transformation

Akhlys leads them to the very edge of Tartarus, where the void merges with the primordial Night. There, the Death Mist fully engulfs them, making them look like living specters. Percy can barely move, and when he sees Annabeth’s withered skin and sunken eyes, terror grips him. The goddess mocks them, claiming they will soon disappear into the darkness. Annabeth realizes that the Mist is not just disguising them—it is slowly killing them. Percy, feeling his body fading, tries to fight back, but his attacks are useless. Akhlys reveals her true form, with sharp claws and fangs, ready to devour them. Annabeth screams in despair as the abyss of Chaos seems to pull them in.

Chapter 48 Summary – The House of Hades – Percy Controls the Poison

Percy and Annabeth struggle to defend themselves, but their mist-formed bodies make them powerless. Akhlys attacks relentlessly, but Percy starts mocking her with sarcastic compliments, weakening her. Annabeth seizes the distraction, rummaging through her backpack for anything useful. Meanwhile, the goddess conjures a lake of poison that threatens to drown them. In a desperate move, Percy tries to control the poison as if it were water—and to his shock, it works. He channels his power and turns the venom against Akhlys, nearly drowning her in her own deadly substance. Annabeth, terrified by Percy’s rage, begs him to stop. Finally, Percy releases the goddess and regains control. However, just as they believe they have survived, the void of Tartarus stirs, and a dark presence rises from the abyss, introducing itself as primordial Night itself.

Chapter 49 Summary – The House of Hades – Leo and the Lost Island

Leo regains consciousness as he plummets from the sky. In a desperate attempt, he constructs a makeshift helicopter using Archimedes' sphere, but his invention explodes midair. He crashes onto a beach, barely surviving. There, he meets a stunningly beautiful girl in a Greek tunic who is furious because he has ruined her dining table. The girl curses the gods and speaks of her eternal curse, demanding that Leo leave. Confused, Leo tries to comply, but his escape attempts fail. The girl, exasperated, informs him that he has arrived on Ogygia—the cursed island of Calypso.

Chapter 50 Summary – The House of Hades – Calypso’s Exile

Leo follows Calypso to her cave, captivated by her beautiful garden and the magic that performs household tasks on its own. Although she is curt and dismissive, he manages to get some information from her: Calypso was exiled to the island for supporting the Titans. Despite the gods’ promise to free her after the war, she remains trapped. Leo realizes that Percy was once here before him and that Calypso fell in love with him but was abandoned. Filled with bitterness, she tells Leo that the gods are mocking them both because now he, too, is trapped on the island with no way to leave.

Chapter 51 Summary – The House of Hades – Life on Ogygia and Leo’s Discovery

Trapped on Ogygia, Leo loses track of time as he searches for a way to escape. Calypso ignores him but leaves him food and clothes, making Leo suspect that she secretly took his measurements. As days pass, Leo builds a shelter and begins repairing Archimedes’ sphere. While exploring, he finds buried pieces of celestial bronze—an unexpected gift that could aid his escape. He sets up a makeshift forge and works tirelessly. Annoyed by the noise, Calypso visits him several times, gradually becoming more interested in his work. Eventually, she offers him fireproof clothing, surprising Leo. Though she feigns indifference, it’s clear she is starting to care about him. In a moment of vulnerability, they tease each other, and Leo realizes that he might not mind the goddess’s company as much as he thought.

Chapter 52 Summary – The House of Hades – Leo’s Escape Plan and Promise to Calypso

Seeing Leo’s determination, Calypso decides to help him build a boat for his escape. They gather materials and work together side by side. During a conversation, Leo offers to take her with him, but she refuses, reminding him that the island holds her captive by the gods’ decree. However, when Gaea tempts her with freedom in exchange for betraying Leo, she refuses, surprising the demigod. This confirms that Leo is crucial to the mission and that his friends need him. Then, the magical raft appears sooner than expected, signaling that Calypso has developed feelings for him. Before he departs, she unexpectedly kisses him, leaving him stunned. As he sails away, Leo makes a dangerous vow—he will return for her, no matter the obstacles.

Chapter 53 Summary – The House of Hades – The Encounter with Nyx, the Goddess of Night

Annabeth and Percy face Nyx, a primordial goddess whose titanic form darkens the abyss. Her chariot, made of Stygian iron, is pulled by vampire horses. Despite her fear, Annabeth uses her intelligence to deceive Nyx, pretending that she and Percy are tourists in Tartarus and that the goddess isn’t important enough to be featured in any brochures. Offended, Nyx summons her children, an army of embodied horrors, but Annabeth sticks to her strategy. Percy joins in, taunting Nyx by claiming that her daughter, Hemera, the goddess of Day, is far more famous. The tactic works—Nyx, enraged, calls forth even more shadows to prove her power. However, in the chaos, Annabeth and Percy seize the opportunity to escape.

Chapter 54 Summary – The House of Hades – Escape from the Mansion of Night

As Nyx’s children argue over who is the darkest, Annabeth and Percy make their move. The darkness becomes absolute, and confusion spreads among the monsters. Wasting no time, Annabeth drags Percy toward the Mansion of Night, which hovers over the abyss. Despite the danger, she follows her instincts and leaps into the void, hoping to reach their destination. During the fall, Nyx and her offspring continue fighting in the endless darkness, giving them the chance to escape undetected. Finally, they land at the entrance of the Mansion of Night—the last obstacle before reaching the Doors of Death.

Chapter 55 Summary – The House of Hades – The Race to the Doors of Death

After landing in the Mansion of Night, Annabeth and Percy run blindly, relying on their other senses to navigate. They feel vibrations in the ground, like a deep heartbeat, signaling that they are close to their goal. Annabeth warns Percy not to open his eyes, as witnessing their surroundings could be deadly. The scent of smoke and the sound of flowing water suggest they have found a possible exit. However, just as Annabeth speeds up, Percy grabs her at the last moment, preventing them from falling into a deadly trap.

Chapter 56 Summary – The House of Hades – The River of Pain and the Heart of Tartarus

Annabeth and Percy reach the Acheron, the fifth river of the Underworld, whose waters whisper the sins and regrets of those dragged into it. Annabeth sees visions of those who died because of her, including Luke Castellan, and nearly succumbs to guilt, but Percy helps her stay strong. With no other option, Percy carries Annabeth and leaps across the river in an act of pure will. Miraculously, they make it across and are met with a chilling sight: the valley at the heart of Tartarus, a pulsating, living landscape where thousands of monsters gather around a dark point at the center. They realize they have found the Doors of Death. Before they can move forward, a rockslide alerts them. To their surprise, it is Bob, the janitor Titan, who has found them and joins them in their mission.

Chapter 57 Summary – The House of Hades – Jason’s Dilemma and Nico’s Urgency

While Jason waits for an audience with the god Auster on the African coast, he watches his friends struggle to repair the Argo II without success. Nico, paler than ever, warns him that Percy is near the Doors of Death and that they must leave immediately. Jason notices Nico’s growing frustration and tries to support him, but Nico, resentful and isolated, is reluctant to trust anyone. Jason reminds him that he has the power to decide how to live his life and that he is not alone. At that moment, they are summoned for their audience with Auster. Jason feels that facing the god of the south wind might be less dangerous than having a difficult conversation with an enraged son of Hades.

Chapter 58 Summary – The House of Hades – Auster’s Challenge and Jason’s Choice

Jason confronts Auster, the god of the south wind, who challenges him to make his own decisions instead of waiting for orders. Auster tells Jason he has been indecisive, torn between his loyalty to Camp Jupiter and his desire to remain at Camp Half-Blood. Realizing that he can no longer hesitate, Jason makes his choice—he decides they must depart immediately. Auster, pleased, summons four venti in the form of fiery storm horses. Without hesitation, Jason uses his power to tame and bind them with ropes of wind. The god, satisfied, gives him a final clue: they must head to Malta. Jason understands that he can no longer wait for guidance—he must take charge and lead his friends.

Chapter 59 Summary – The House of Hades – The Race to Malta and Jason’s Fear

Jason guides the Argo II toward Malta with the storm horses, an exhausting task that leaves his body covered in burns and blisters. Piper helps him recover with ambrosia, but Jason feels that the familiar taste of home has changed, as if he is leaving Camp Jupiter behind forever. As they approach Malta, they spot an unmistakable sight in the harbor: Leo’s raft. Jason knows his friend is there and that they must find him quickly. However, deep in his mind, he cannot shake the feeling that the prophecy’s choice between “storm or fire” hints at an impending tragedy, and he fears that neither he nor Leo will survive what is coming.

Chapter 60 Summary – The House of Hades – Reuniting with Leo and the Shadow of War

The group finds Leo on a terrace in Malta, his clothes perfectly intact as if nothing had happened. Though he jokes with the others, Jason notices something is wrong. Leo avoids his gaze and seems more subdued than usual, as if someone has broken his heart. As they talk, it becomes clear that Leo was on Calypso’s island. When Frank mentions her name, Leo abruptly changes the subject and becomes eager to return to the ship. Just as they prepare to leave, Hazel senses an anomaly in the sky—flashes of darkness heading toward Greece. Nico confirms their worst fear: the House of Hades is already open, and monsters are pouring into the world in massive numbers. Jason reaffirms that they must reach Epirus quickly and rescue Percy and Annabeth. Forcing a smile, Leo promises that he still has a few tricks up his sleeve.

Chapter 61 Summary – The House of Hades – The Horde of Monsters in Tartarus

Shrouded in the Death Mist, Percy and Annabeth advance alongside Bob toward the heart of Tartarus, where thousands of monsters gather to cross the Doors of Death. As they attempt to blend in, Percy reflects on the endless nature of their enemies but also on the resilience of demigods. The crowd thickens, and they spot Geryon and other past foes, reinforcing the idea that every battle is only a temporary victory. However, thinking about Annabeth and their possible future together gives Percy hope. As they near their destination, a thunderous voice calls Bob by his true name: Iapetus.

Chapter 62 Summary – The House of Hades – Encounter with Koios, Bob’s Brother

A Titan named Koios approaches Bob, recognizing him as his brother Iapetus. Koios reminds him of his past and tries to convince him to rejoin the Titans, promising that Gaea favors her firstborn children. Bob pretends to agree while Percy and Annabeth stealthily move forward. Koios mentions that the giants have already crossed the doors, meaning their friends in the mortal world are in danger. He also reveals that two other Titans guard the doors, complicating their mission further. After Koios leaves, Bob struggles with his identity, but Percy and Annabeth encourage him to decide who he truly wants to be. Bob reaffirms his loyalty to them and leads them toward the Doors of Death.

Chapter 63 Summary – The House of Hades – The Plan to Cross the Doors of Death

Percy and Annabeth reach the Doors of Death, which resemble the Olympian gates but are covered in frost and bound by black chains. Two Titans, Hyperion and Krios, stand guard. Bob explains that the doors are designed to teleport, but the chains have anchored them, allowing monsters to pass freely. To close the doors, someone must hold the up button for twelve minutes while another cuts the chains. Bob volunteers to stay behind and defend the elevator, sacrificing himself for the mission. Percy secretly considers taking his place but focuses first on breaking the chains.

Chapter 64 Summary – The House of Hades – Tartarus Reveals Himself

Bob battles Hyperion and Krios to distract them while Percy and Annabeth move toward the chains. Bob defies his brothers, declaring that he is more than just a janitor. Just as Annabeth prepares to sever the chains, a massive explosion shakes the ground, obliterating the two Titans. A colossal being materializes—Tartarus himself. The god of the abyss has decided to intervene, declaring that Percy and Annabeth have proven too powerful to be ignored. His presence terrifies the monsters, who hail him as the supreme ruler of the underworld. Percy, paralyzed by the sheer magnitude of his foe, braces himself for the most terrifying battle of his life.

Chapter 65 Summary – The House of Hades – Frank and the Arrival at the House of Hades

As the Argo II nears the House of Hades, Frank reflects on his Greek heritage and his family's journey through history. While Leo pilots the ship, Hazel and Nico detect the dark storm emanating from the Necromanteion, marking the entrance to the Doors of Death. Before landing, Frank discovers that Coach Hedge has been sending Iris messages to his wife Mellie, who is pregnant and trapped at Camp Half-Blood. Frank comforts him and assigns him the ship’s defense. Later, Leo gives Frank a fireproof pouch to protect his life stick, showing that he now trusts him. As they arrive at their destination, the team prepares to enter the ruins and face Gaea’s army.

Chapter 66 Summary – The House of Hades – The Path to the Necromanteion

Frank and his friends arrive at the ruins of the Necromanteion, an ancient oracle of the dead, as a dark storm rages above them. Nico warns them about the dangers of the underground tunnels and gives them barley biscuits to protect against the poison they will encounter inside. Hazel senses that the place was once a manor before becoming a temple of Hades. As they proceed, a cave-in blocks their path, but Hazel clears it with her powers. Inside, the atmosphere becomes heavier, and they see symbols of Hades, such as black cows and owls. They come across a chalice of poison that they must drink to proceed. Frank hears a mysterious voice calling him to Pylos, while Hazel senses an unseen force hiding the way. The group presses forward, knowing that in this place, the dead are stronger than the living.

Chapter 67 Summary – The House of Hades – Frank Zhang’s Ascent

The tunnels collapse as the demigods enter, separating Frank, Jason, Piper, and Nico from Hazel and Leo. Soon, an army of monsters appears, including Cyclopes, empousai, and telkhines. Nico summons a legion of Roman ghost soldiers, but they are disoriented and do not obey. Frank, wounded by an arrow, realizes that Jason is no longer recognized as a Roman leader by the spirits. Jason officially promotes Frank to praetor, granting him the authority needed. Immediately, the undead soldiers obey, forming a defensive line and launching fiery arrows. Frank commands the battle strategically, positioning the legionaries in key spots. Piper uses her charm-speak to confuse the empousai, while Jason leads an aerial assault. Despite the brutal fight, Frank knows they must push forward to save Percy and Annabeth. With his newfound leadership, the legion charges, overwhelming the enemy army.

Chapter 68 Summary – The House of Hades – Frank, the Warrior of Mars

Blessed by Mars, Frank leads the charge with unstoppable force. He cuts through Cyclopes, defeats telkhines, and crushes empousai with terrifying skill. His ghostly legion fights fearlessly, destroying monsters while Jason and Piper battle beside him. Nico continues summoning more spirits. As Greek fire and Arai curses threaten the group, Frank maintains the offensive. Finally, after an intense confrontation, the demigods eliminate the last of their foes. Exhausted but standing, Frank is praised by Jason and Piper for his leadership, while Nico extinguishes Diocletian’s scepter, allowing the spirits to rest. With the battlefield cleared, Frank insists they find Hazel and Leo. However, a grim feeling lingers—Percy and Annabeth are in danger, and the Doors of Death may soon close forever.

Chapter 69 Summary – The House of Hades – The Power of Tartarus

Annabeth and Percy freeze in terror as Tartarus himself takes physical form. His colossal body and swirling, dark face consume everything around him. Percy, weakened by the curses, drops his sword as the surrounding monsters remain silent in awe. Tartarus revels in his newfound form, but Bob steps in to challenge him. Despite being a Titan, Bob is easily repelled. However, he stands firm, declaring that he is no longer Iapetus and has chosen his own path. Small Bob, now a saber-toothed tiger, attacks the god of the abyss, momentarily distracting him. Seizing the opportunity, Annabeth and Percy move toward the Doors of Death. Though they know Tartarus is unbeatable, Bob gives them a chance to escape. The battle between the Titan and the god of monsters begins, while the demigods prepare to flee.

Chapter 70 Summary – The House of Hades – The Last Chance to Escape

Percy and Annabeth manage to free the Doors of Death by breaking their chains, but the army of monsters advances. As Bob and Small Bob fight Tartarus, Percy and Annabeth battle empousai, Cyclopes, and telkhines trying to block their escape. They realize that for the plan to work, someone must operate the doors for twelve minutes, meaning one of them must stay behind. However, Annabeth refuses to leave Percy. Just as the monsters overwhelm them, a new figure appears: Damasen, the peaceful giant, arrives riding the Maeonian drakon. With his spear and the beast’s strength, he crushes the monsters and joins the fight against Tartarus. Annabeth smiles, knowing that her words changed Damasen’s fate. The final battle in Tartarus is far from over, but hope shines with the arrival of their unexpected ally.

Chapter 71 Summary – The House of Hades – Damasen’s Final Battle

Damasen bravely challenges Tartarus, facing the god of the abyss while his Maeonian drakon crushes the surrounding monsters. Bob, gravely wounded, approaches the Doors of Death, where Annabeth and Percy must escape. Despite Percy’s pleas, Bob insists on staying behind to keep the doors open, saying it is his fate. Annabeth, in tears, promises that he will be remembered as a hero. In a final farewell, Bob asks them to greet the sun and stars for him. As the doors close, Percy and Annabeth are forced to leave behind their two allies, who sacrifice themselves fighting Tartarus.

Chapter 72 Summary – The House of Hades – The Last Struggle to Survive

Annabeth and Percy struggle to keep the elevator doors shut as they ascend, fighting against the pull of the void between life and death. Percy, devastated by the loss of Bob and Damasen, vows to destroy Gaea. Annabeth, though equally heartbroken, focuses on their mission: they must survive for twelve minutes until they reach the mortal world. The absurd elevator music makes the moment feel surreal, while fear and guilt weigh heavily on them. Annabeth recalls Bob’s warning about future sacrifices and fears that Gaea will not be easily defeated.

Chapter 73 Summary – The House of Hades – Pasiphaë’s Challenge

Hazel and Leo, trapped after the tunnel collapse, regret being separated from their friends. However, they decide to push forward, following the cold emanating from the most dangerous direction. They encounter Pasiphaë, the cruel sorceress who created the Minotaur’s labyrinth. Clitius, the giant of darkness, stands beside her, shrouded in black smoke. Pasiphaë presents them with a cruel choice: die or allow Percy and Annabeth to be sacrificed in Athens. As Hazel battles the sorceress’s illusions, Leo tries to find a weakness in her deadly traps.

Chapter 74 Summary – The House of Hades – Hazel’s Labyrinth of the Mind

Pasiphaë unleashes a new labyrinth to confuse and destroy Hazel and Leo. Hazel, using her mastery over the Mist, manipulates the illusions to alter the environment and get closer to her enemy. By creating even more treacherous pathways and disorienting the sorceress, Hazel traps Pasiphaë in her own deception. Finally, Pasiphaë falls into an illusory trap and disappears. However, Clitius remains, blocking Percy and Annabeth from exiting the Doors of Death. With only seconds left, Leo manages to activate the button to open the doors.

Chapter 75 Summary – The House of Hades – The Power of Hazel and Hecate

Percy and Annabeth collapse onto the ground, enveloped in Clitius’s smoke. Leo attempts to attack with fire, but the giant’s darkness extinguishes his flames. Just when all hope seems lost, Hecate appears, declaring that she will fight alongside Hazel. Clitius mocks them, but Hazel, empowered by the goddess, channels the Mist and strikes with both magic and sword. As she cuts the chains binding the doors, the giant weakens, but Hazel is injured. When it seems they may fail, Frank, Jason, Piper, and Nico arrive, ready for the final battle.

Chapter 76 Summary – The House of Hades – The End of Clitius and Hecate’s Farewell

The group attacks Clitius from all sides, weakening him. Jason shatters his armor with a powerful strike, and Hecate advances with her torches to finish him off. The goddess engulfs him in flames, reducing him to ashes. Exhausted, the demigods celebrate their victory, but Hecate urges them to leave quickly. Hazel, injured but determined, helps Nico transport them through the shadows to the surface. They reappear on the banks of the Acheron, where they can finally rest and share what happened. Jason announces that Frank has been named praetor, and Piper warns of Octavian’s imminent attack on Camp Half-Blood. Just as the Argo II arrives to pick them up, Reyna appears, bloodied but ready for her next mission.

Chapter 77 Summary – The House of Hades – The Plan for the Athena Parthenos

The group reunites with Reyna, who has lost her pegasus but remains determined to complete her mission. As they exchange stories, Nico explains that the statue must be returned to Camp Half-Blood to prevent war. Despite the suggestion to use Pasiphaë’s labyrinth, Percy and Annabeth reject the idea as too dangerous. Nico offers to shadow-travel with it but warns that he will need protection. Frank suggests that Coach Hedge accompany him, as he can fight and mediate with the Greeks. Reyna accepts the mission, promising to arrive in time. As the group splits up, Percy wonders if heading to Athens is exactly what Gaea wants. Annabeth reminds him that the prophecy is unavoidable—they must face it.

Chapter 78 Summary – The House of Hades – The Journey Begins

Percy thanks Nico for keeping his promise to check on Bob. Though Nico remains distant, he prepares to transport the Athena Parthenos. Along with Reyna and Hedge, he vanishes into the shadows. Meanwhile, the Argo II sails toward Athens, avoiding the dangers of land travel. Relieved to be at sea, Percy cannot stop thinking about Bob and Damasen, remembering their sacrifice. Annabeth promises him that their deaths will not be in vain and that they will defeat Gaea. FAQs – Chapter by Chapter Summary – The House of Hades

What is Bob the janitor Titan’s role in the final chapters of The House of Hades?

Bob is the book’s quiet revelation—a forgotten enemy who becomes the ultimate ally. His selfless actions in Tartarus defy his origins, showing that redemption isn’t earned by blood but by choice. He saves Percy and Annabeth from the Arai not with brute force, but through loyalty and compassion. His sacrifice doesn’t make headlines—it anchors the emotional climax. Through Bob, the book challenges our ideas of who deserves forgiveness and how deeply memory shapes identity.

How does Hazel master the Mist and what does it mean for her character arc?

Hazel’s evolution from soldier to sorceress is one of the book’s most subtle victories. Trained by Hecate, she learns that power isn’t just about strength, but perception. Her triumph comes not in battle, but when she defeats Sciron through illusion alone—redefining her role within the group. Her command over the Mist is more than magic; it’s a metaphor for trust in her instincts and her ability to bend the narrative, not just follow it.

Why are the Arai curses a turning point for Percy and Annabeth?

The Arai aren’t just monsters—they’re memory made flesh. Each curse forces Percy and Annabeth to confront the unseen cost of their past victories. For once, brute force is useless. The trauma is emotional, even existential. This moment tests their endurance, not as warriors, but as human beings. Their survival hinges on vulnerability, not valor, and on the faith they place in Bob—a shift that changes how they face future battles.

What is the symbolic meaning of the Phlegethon in Tartarus?

The Phlegethon, a river of fire that heals, inverts expectations. It represents pain as a form of transformation. Drinking from it is an act of surrender and resilience. For Percy and Annabeth, it means accepting that suffering is not always an obstacle—it can be a path. The river becomes a crucible, cleansing them not of guilt, but of fear. It’s a reminder that growth often requires walking through fire, not avoiding it.

What does Nico di Angelo’s confession reveal about his place in the team?

Nico’s forced confession to Cupid—that he once loved Percy—isn’t just a personal truth, it’s a tectonic shift in how he fits within the group. Until now, Nico’s strength has been solitude, but his admission cracks that armor. Jason’s quiet acceptance is pivotal, not just for Nico’s dignity but for the team’s cohesion. It marks the moment Nico stops being an outsider and becomes part of a found family—without ever needing to change who he is.
