As they unmask the killer, personal truths collide—Robin ends her marriage, yet the words Strike longs to say dissolve again into their shared silence.

Introduction – Lethal White
A distressed man bursts into Strike’s office claiming he once saw a girl strangled and wrapped in a pink blanket. That fractured memory pulls the detectives into a web of political blackmail, buried family histories and a murder hidden behind decades of silence. In Lethal White, Robin and Strike work under the strain of a broken year—one marked by distance, guilt and truths neither has dared to confront.
Inside the British Parliament, alliances fracture and public façades crumble as every clue reveals a deeper rot beneath the surface. The Chiswell case forces both detectives to navigate a landscape where influence is currency, secrets are weapons and every misstep has consequences.
The investigation moves inexorably toward a killing that exposes both corruption and emotional vulnerability, and to see how this turning point fits within the larger arc of the series, you can revisit the Cormoran Strike reading order ➤

The wedding of Robin Ellacott and Matthew Cunliffe takes place in an elegant country hotel, surrounded by guests, flowers and hidden tensions. Although the scene seems perfect, the scar on Robin’s arm and her discomfort reveal an internal conflict. Strike, her former boss, arrives injured after capturing the Shacklewell ripper. Robin, caught between her recent marriage and her unresolved emotions, is moved to see him. Matthew, consumed by jealousy, admits he deleted Strike’s calls and messages to prevent her from returning to the agency. This treacherous act marks a breaking point. Robin, hurt, confronts him in the bridal suite, but decides to continue with the celebration. When Strike tries to leave, she stops him and agrees to return to work with him. They embrace intensely, without saying everything they feel. He leaves, and she returns to the party, knowing that if he had said “Come with me,” she would have followed him.
UN YEAR LATER
FIRST PART
Chapter 1 Summary – Lethal White – Strike’s Fame, the Crisis with Robin and a New Hire
One year after capturing the Shacklewell ripper, Cormoran Strike struggles with the aftermath of fame. Although his agency has grown, media overexposure threatens his professional anonymity. Robin, now his partner, is still married to Matthew despite his betrayal. The tension between them is evident, and their relationship has become distant and formal. Even so, Strike notices Robin showing signs of stress and dissociation. While she is away due to moving house, Strike fires an inefficient associate and interviews Sam Barclay, an ex‑military man wrongly accused years ago, whom he offers a temporary position. The interview takes place in his favorite pub, where their shared past reinforces trust. Upon leaving, Strike tries to let Robin know about the hire, but she does not answer. Back at the agency, he gets an urgent call: a disturbed man is waiting at the office, agitated and desperate to share something important.
Chapter 2 Summary – Lethal White – Billy Appears with a Crime from the Past
Upon arriving at the agency, Strike encounters a young man named Billy, dirty, trembling and with a disturbing repetitive tic. Denise, the temporary secretary, is terrified. Billy claims to have witnessed the strangling of a girl wrapped in a pink blanket, although they later said it was a boy. He mentions his brother Jimmy, denies that he was the killer, and offers to show the burial site. Apparently psychotic, Billy shows paranoia, refuses to give his full address and runs off when he learns the police were called. Strike, frustrated, watches him escape without being able to reach him. Denise boasts about trying to stop him, while the detective contains his anger. Intrigued by the mention of the horse and the pink blanket, Strike considers that Billy’s story could have a real basis. His instinct prevents him from ignoring the confession, despite his exhausting day and all signs pointing to a mental health crisis.
Chapter 3 Summary – Lethal White – Robin Remembers the Wedding and Faces Her Truth
After leaving the Villiers Trust clinic, Robin feels briefly happy. She has decided to quit psychodynamic therapy, although cognitive‑behavioral therapy has helped her. She walks through her new neighborhood, exploring and reflecting on the emotional chaos of the past year. She recalls the disastrous wedding night: relatives fighting, her emotional pain, and the urge to flee with Matthew to the Maldives. There, confused, she tried to call Strike, but discovered he was with another woman. Hurt, she concluded he did not feel the same. On the beach, she contemplated whether she was truly in love or confusing admiration and gratitude with love. She was going to leave Matthew, but a sudden infection of his changed her plans. Upon returning to London, Strike seemed distant. Robin chose to save her marriage, although her doubts persisted. In the end, she receives a call from Strike, who tells her about Billy. That case brings them together again, and the connection that seemed broken still pulses beneath the surface.
Chapter 4 Summary – Lethal White – Billy’s Address and an Impulsive Decision
Still intrigued by Billy, Strike examines the notebook Billy used and discovers the address “Charlemont Road” penciled in. He investigates possible residents but finds no exact matches, although a certain James Farraday catches his attention. The detective cannot explain his impulse: Billy’s story disturbs him, too concrete to be a mere hallucination. That night, tired but free, he declines visiting Lorelei and decides to make use of his time. Despite the pain in his leg, he cannot resist following Billy’s trail. London buzzes with the Olympics, but Strike, immersed in a routine surveillance of a plastic surgeon, grows bored. When the day ends earlier than expected, instead of going home, he heads toward Charlemont Road. His compulsive need to solve mysteries drives him. Although the case does not officially exist yet, Billy’s account has ignited in him the unmistakable spark of a possible hidden crime.
Chapter 5 Summary – Lethal White – Charlemont Road and the Discovery of Jimmy Knight
Cormoran Strike arrives at Charlemont Road, sore and determined to find Billy despite physical difficulties. After vainly trying to speak with a woman who denies knowing Billy or Jimmy, Strike inspects the street, stopping at a dilapidated house with a note mentioning a ROC meeting at The Well civic center. Curious, he decides to attend. There, he infiltrates among activists protesting the Olympics. At the meeting, a young activist rambles until Jimmy Knight, a charismatic and furious leader of the movement, takes the floor. His radical speech stirs the crowd, and Strike identifies him as Billy’s brother by physical resemblance. He also notices the presence of an undercover police officer. As Jimmy denounces capitalism and police repression, Strike grows uneasy about the political connections of the event and the suspicious mention of Chiswell. The mystery deepens and the detective feels drawn into something much larger.
Chapter 6 Summary – Lethal White – First Encounter with Jimmy and Tension at the Pub
After the ROC meeting, Strike watches a young Asian man confront Jimmy Knight in private. Although he cannot hear the entire conversation, he senses tension. He then helps the center’s manager pick up chairs, earning her sympathy. He heads to the White Horse pub, where he finds Jimmy, Flick and other activists. Upon introducing himself as a private detective, Flick reacts with alarm, convinced he has been sent by Chiswell. Jimmy pulls him aside to talk privately. Strike tells him that Billy visited him, and Jimmy confirms he is his brother. He attributes Billy’s delusions to schizoaffective disorder, minimizing the murder story. Although he claims Billy is fine, he offers no clear details about his whereabouts. Strike, skeptical, hands him his card. As they part, he mentions that Billy said Jimmy was also present at the supposed crime scene. Flick’s nervous reaction raises even more suspicions in the detective.
Chapter 7 Summary – Lethal White – Robin’s Party and the Shadow of the Past
Robin throws a party in her new rented house in Deptford, pressured by Matthew. Although the setting is charming, her discomfort is constant. As she gets ready, she hesitates between a new dress and the emerald green Cavalli Strike gave her, but opts for the gray one to please Matthew. Sarah Shadlock, her husband’s former lover, arrives with her fiancé and provocative attitudes. Robin suspects Sarah is trying to unsettle her. When Vanessa Ekwensi, a friend and police officer, arrives, Robin feels accompanied. The party fills with Matthew’s colleagues, and Tom, his office mate, pesters her with impertinent comments. Strike appears with Lorelei, increasing Robin’s nerves. Although she tries to interact, she avoids any direct conversation with him. Strike, torn by jealousy and doubts, watches the dynamic with Matthew. Vanessa reveals the house is rented. That night, Lorelei criticizes the party, and Strike cannot get the image of Robin out of his head.
Chapter 8 Summary – Lethal White – Billy’s Call and a Connection to Power
On Monday morning, Robin returns to the office and hears a troubling message from Billy, who claims to be trapped, in danger and sorry for having spoken. As they try to track the call, another communication comes in: Jasper Chiswell, Minister of Culture, wishes to hire Strike personally. Robin recognizes him and recalls his controversial history, including his son’s conviction for involuntary manslaughter. Strike reveals that Jimmy Knight mentioned Chiswell hostilely during a meeting, which piques further interest. He also recalls that he investigated the death of Chiswell’s elder son, Freddie, in Iraq when he worked at MI‑5. Intrigued by the connections, Strike agrees to meet Chiswell on Friday at the exclusive Pratt’s club. Robin, enthusiastic about the rekindled dynamic with her partner, detects hidden implications in the case’s details. Meanwhile, Billy remains missing, and the sense that everything is linked grows with each revelation.
Chapter 9 Summary – Lethal White – Political Blackmail and a Dark Case in Billy’s Childhood
Strike arrives at the Pratt’s club to meet Jasper Chiswell, Minister of Culture, who is late due to a phone argument with his young wife, Kinvara. The meeting takes place in a private dining room, where Chiswell, after eyeing the detective with suspicion, reveals that he is being blackmailed by Jimmy Knight, a left‑wing agitator, and by Geraint Winn, husband of Della Winn, Sports Minister. The minister doesn’t provide exact details but mentions possible compromising photos from an event six years earlier. Chiswell seeks to hire Strike to find incriminating information on both extortionists. The detective reveals that Billy Knight, Jimmy’s brother, visited him disturbed and spoke of witnessing the strangling of a girl in his childhood. In response, Chiswell, far from surprised, seems to recognize the story, though he denies having deaths on his conscience, hinting that there may have been undesirable consequences from past actions.
Chapter 10 Summary – Lethal White – Robin Infiltrates and Strike Plans the Counterattack
After the meeting with Chiswell, Strike meets Robin at the Red Lion pub and explains the assignment: investigate Jimmy Knight and Geraint Winn before they obtain evidence that could sink the minister. Robin, though uncomfortable with the case’s ethics, agrees to infiltrate the House of Commons using the alias “Venetia Hall.” She will pretend to be Chiswell’s goddaughter interested in politics to get close to Winn. Strike details installing microphones and surveillance plans. The discussion is interrupted when Sarah Shadlock appears, compromising Robin in front of Matthew. Later, Strike plans the case logistics: Barclay will watch Jimmy, Andy will continue with Doctor Chungo, and Robin will begin with Winn. Chiswell mentions his deceased son, Freddie, and the troubled Raphael. Strike doesn’t fully trust the minister but believes his desperation is sincere. Intrigued by Billy, he decides to investigate old missing‑child cases in Oxfordshire.
Chapter 11 Summary – Lethal White – Lorelei, Memories and the Search for Digital Evidence
Strike spends the night with Lorelei at his Camden apartment, enjoying a brief break amid the chaos. Although the relationship is comfortable, he avoids emotional commitment, knowing he doesn’t feel for her what he once felt for Charlotte. He devotes Saturday to planning the operation against Jimmy and Winn. As Lorelei cooks, Strike and Barclay organize the infiltration into the ROC group, taking advantage of the new member’s casual style. Then, in his office, he plunges into a long day of digital investigation. Tracking Jimmy Knight, he discovers links to radical parties, a history of frivolous lawsuits, and an ex‑wife in Manchester who reported him. He also analyzes social media of Flick, Jimmy’s current partner. The details reveal a volatile profile prone to conflict. When finished, he adds everything to his dossier and plans his next move. He receives an email from Wardle with names of missing children in Oxfordshire that could match Billy’s story.
Chapter 12 Summary – Lethal White – Robin Prepares Her Fake Identity and Faces Domestic Pressure
While England faces Italy in the Euro Cup, Robin locks herself in her room to try on hazel contact lenses, part of her disguise to infiltrate Parliament as Chiswell’s goddaughter. Matthew, her husband, disapproves of her undercover mission and shows jealousy about her closeness with Strike. Robin, fed up, avoids further discussion. She reviews the report Strike sent her about Della Winn and her husband Geraint: both lost a daughter to suicide, and he seems to have a dark role behind the scenes. Strike calls her while she eats noodles in his office. Together they go over Chiswell’s family history, including his sons Freddie and Raff, and his current wife Kinvara. They discuss infiltration plans and the possibility that Billy told the truth about a strangled girl. Although it’s most likely a delusion, Strike resists ignoring it. Robin feels that her old professional complicity is beginning to resurface.
Chapter 13 Summary – Lethal White – Robin Infiltrated and the First Encounter with Winn
After a nightmare that relives her strangulation, Robin begins her infiltration in Parliament under the identity of Venetia Hall. Izzy Chiswell guides her to her father’s chaotic office, where Robin hides the microphones in a folder among papers to be shredded. Izzy, chatty, mentions that her brother Raff will soon start working there, though she knows nothing about the blackmail. Robin tries to befriend Aamir, Della Winn’s assistant, but he rejects her. Exploring the building, anxiety overwhelms her and she suffers a panic attack, which she disguises as asthma to a friendly doorman. Later, she crosses paths with Winn, who scrutinizes her with a lascivious look. Pretending admiration, Robin confirms she has discovered a weak point: Winn is vulnerable to insinuations. However, imagining a harassment situation deeply unsettles her. Still, she manages to pull herself together and continues, determined to complete her mission without succumbing to fear.
Chapter 14 Summary – Lethal White – The Disappearance of Suki Lewis and a Journey into the Past
Strike sets out for Manchester to investigate Jimmy Knight’s past and interview his ex‑wife. As he drives, he reflects on the two missing‑child cases in Oxfordshire. He dismisses one, but the case of Suki Lewis, an androgynous girl who disappeared in 1992, intrigues him. It could match Billy’s account of a strangled girl who appeared to be a boy. Strike asks Robin to casually ask Izzy about her. The trip evokes memories of his nomadic childhood with his sister Lucy and his mother, Leda. Despite having lived through traumatic situations, Lucy opted for a conventional life, whereas Robin, raised in stability, faces the horror of investigating crimes every day. He compares her with affection, admiring her courage. As he nears his destination, he wishes to have Robin by his side to share theories. That emotional closeness reflects how much he values his partner, although he does not express it openly.
Chapter 15 Summary – Lethal White – Robin Before Chiswell and the Unexpected Encounter with Della Winn
Robin goes to Jasper Chiswell’s office, where he is tense after receiving a suspicious call from The Sun. The minister evaluates her disdainfully and demands progress, but Robin has yet to install the microphone in Winn’s office. Soon after, Della Winn appears with her guide dog. Chiswell, annoyed, masks his reaction. Della is charismatic and imposing, and claims to know Robin, confusing her with a former fencer friend of her late son Freddie. Although Robin denies the connection, the minister’s wife insists with such certainty that it disarms any denial. The scene leaves Robin disconcerted and under suspicion. Tension rises when Della, with a sharp smile, tells her “should we meet again,” implying she does not believe her cover story. Isolated in a hostile political environment full of distrust, Robin must move cautiously. Despite appearances, loyalties and perceptions within Parliament prove as dangerous as the blackmail they seek to stop.
Chapter 16 Summary – Lethal White – Strike Discovers Jimmy’s Past and the Link with Chiswell
Cormoran Strike arrives in Manchester to meet Dawn Clancy, Jimmy Knight’s ex‑wife, at her pink hair salon. After confirming his identity as a detective, she agrees eagerly. Between cigarettes and coffees, Dawn recounts how Jimmy seduced her with political speeches and then abused her trust. He emptied her accounts, filed frivolous lawsuits, and even tried to accuse her of harassment. Although violent and manipulative, Jimmy had a magnetism that particularly attracted young idealists. Dawn also mentions Jimmy’s brother, Billy, a fragile boy with tics whom she remembers fondly. She describes the brothers’ father as a violent man who raised them alone and worked for the Chiswell family. Jimmy, tormented by the past, said their father would go to hell for “how he earned his living.” Upon discovering that Mr. Knight lived on Chiswell land without paying rent, Strike deduces that this family’s past is closely tied to the current mystery.
Chapter 17 Summary – Lethal White – Geraint Approaches Robin and the Mic Is Installed
Robin spends hours wandering the halls of Parliament, waiting for an opportunity to install the microphone in Geraint Winn’s office. Finally, he appears somewhat drunk after a long lunch and invites her in, delighted to see her. Robin takes the chance to inspect the place while Winn rambles about his charity, Equality and Sport, and his wife Della. Geraint, awkward and condescending, reveals his resentment toward the Chiswells, especially over a conflict between his daughter Rhiannon and Verity Pulham. When he shows a photo of his late daughter, he comes dangerously close to Robin and strokes the scar on her arm, claiming concern. Robin steps back, and though she keeps her composure, the mood shifts. Pretending interest in the charities, she manages to leave the office gracefully. Aamir, Winn’s assistant, watches the entire scene with suspicion, and Robin understands that, besides installing the microphone, she must monitor every gesture in this hostile environment.
Chapter 18 Summary – Lethal White – Barclay Infiltrates and Robin Lies with Ease
After an exhausting day, Strike receives a call from Barclay, who has successfully infiltrated Jimmy Knight’s circle over a few beers. Taking advantage of anti‑monarchy fervor, he gains the activist’s trust and is invited to a ROC meeting. While Strike smokes and stretches his legs, he calls Robin. At home with Matthew, she pretends it’s her friend Vanessa on the line and steps into the garden to talk. They discuss increasing media pressure and the possibility that Winn leaked information to The Sun. Robin tells Strike about Della’s confusion in identifying her as Verity Pulham, which could hint at a deeper personal conflict between the Winns and Chiswell. She also admits she has not yet installed the microphone. Later, she reflects on her marriage to Matthew, their lost connection, and her therapist’s quote about how people change over a decade. The lie no longer weighs on her.
Chapter 19 Summary – Lethal White – Robin Installs the Mic and Meets Raphael Chiswell
Robin gets up early to take advantage of a moment alone in Geraint Winn’s office. Pretending she lost a bracelet, she manages to enter, unplugs a fan and places the microphone in the socket. Just as she finishes, Aamir catches her. She improvises a convincing excuse, though she notices his distrust. Returning to Izzy’s office, Robin suffers a panic attack when a stranger startles her from behind. She locks herself in the bathroom, repeats calming phrases and manages to compose herself. Upon returning, she discovers the man is Raphael Chiswell, the minister’s youngest son. His striking looks and confident air contrast with his background, having served time for involuntary manslaughter. In the office, Izzy shares family nicknames and reveals that Kinvara, Chiswell’s wife, owns nine horses and has had paranoid episodes since the death of her newborn son. Alone with Robin, Raphael plays a message on the answering machine: a direct threat against Chiswell, possibly from Jimmy.
Chapter 20 Summary – Lethal White – The Tape Reveals Blackmail, Photos and Growing Tension
Strike and Robin meet at the Two Chairmen pub. She arrives late but triumphant: she managed to install a microphone and swapped it for another before the meeting. She hands Strike a key recording: Geraint Winn talks with Jimmy Knight, who demands money and threatens to go to the press if he doesn’t receive the Foreign Office photographs. Aamir, Winn’s assistant, is hesitant to cooperate but gives in under pressure. While eating, Robin also shares that Kinvara claims to have seen men around her property and that one of her horses was injured. Strike suspects Jimmy might be involved, though the motive remains unclear. They also discuss Raphael, and Strike, annoyed, senses Robin’s interest in him. Later, the detective calls Chiswell and tells him about the recorded conversation. The minister erupts with rage, threatening retaliation against Aamir. The mystery becomes increasingly tangled with blackmail, ghosts from the past, and new leads in Oxfordshire.
Chapter 21 Summary – Lethal White – Robin’s Dilemma and Kinvara’s Arrival
Robin tries to swap the second hidden mic in Winn’s office, but Aamir is there. Meanwhile, Raphael keeps trying to get close to her, making her moves more difficult. Robin feels torn: though she knows Raphael is a convicted criminal, she senses a vulnerability that stirs her empathy. During a tense conversation with Aamir and Izzy, Chiswell bursts in quoting Plato and ridiculing the assistant with offensive Latin references. Later, Robin hides in the crypt of Parliament to read an urgent message from Strike: he needs her to watch a ROC protest. However, as it’s her wedding anniversary with Matthew, she declines the assignment, albeit with regret. Back in the office, Raphael talks about redemption, and she senses his need for forgiveness. Tension rises when Kinvara, Chiswell’s wife, appears, doesn’t recognize Robin, and reports seeing a man with a spade on her property.
Chapter 22 Summary – Lethal White – Strike Undercover and Truths Between Jimmy and Flick
Cormoran Strike, hurt by Robin’s refusal, infiltrates the anti‑missile protest disguised with a Guy Fawkes mask. Though his prosthetic leg causes him pain, he perseveres to observe Jimmy Knight, who flirts and jokes with young protesters. Flick’s arrival sparks a heated argument between her and Jimmy, revealing tensions over jealousy and manipulation. Flick has been taking care of Billy, whom she says is deteriorating and constantly mentions Strike as his savior. The couple reconciles with a kiss, but Strike hears Flick suggest Jimmy should visit the detective. Jimmy then admits he plans to, hoping to calm Billy, since they still need him hidden. Strike follows them to the station, but a leg injury causes him to fall. Hurt, bleeding, and unable to walk, he calls Lorelei for help. Meanwhile, the information about Billy grows more troubling and urgent.
Chapter 23 Summary – Lethal White – The Ruined Anniversary and Total Disconnection
Robin heads to an expensive country hotel with Matthew to celebrate their anniversary, but tension is obvious from the start. An argument about her not wearing their wedding rings exposes the deep emotional distance between them. Dinner at a luxury restaurant passes in silence, and the night ends with them sleeping back to back. The next day, they try to keep up appearances while strolling through the gardens, but Robin feels disconnected and trapped. She constantly thinks about Strike, wondering if he uncovered anything at the protest. When they finally have sex, she does it just to avoid another fight, symbolically sealing their broken marriage. Robin cries silently, lying to herself as she says “I love you too.” She checks her phone in secret, looking for news from Bow and finding protest photos. Seeing a man in a mask, she believes it’s Strike. That moment confirms her mind and loyalty are no longer with Matthew.
Chapter 24 Summary – Lethal White – Strike’s Fall, the Unreturned “I Love You” and The Sun’s Threat
Six days after his fall, Strike returns to his apartment on crutches, having spent five nights at Lorelei’s place. Grateful but uncomfortable, he recalls how she confessed her love and he didn’t respond. Filled with guilt and physical pain, he mentally reviews his failed relationships—from Ciara to Lorelei—and his vow never to say “I love you” again unless he truly means it. As he smokes and reviews reports, he receives a call from Dominic Culpepper, a journalist at The Sun, offering to investigate a government minister, hinting they already have a source. Strike suspects it’s Chiswell and that Geraint Winn leaked the information. Shortly after, Barclay calls: Jimmy said he knows a minister “with blood on his hands, children’s blood.” While considering whether the phrase is literal or metaphorical, Strike’s sister Lucy insists on calling. When he answers, he turns pale at what she has to tell him.
Chapter 25 Summary – Lethal White – Winn’s Blackmail and Elspeth’s Secret
Robin receives a message from Strike about The Sun’s interest in Chiswell and worries she still hasn’t regained access to Winn’s office. Taking advantage of a distracted postman, she pretends to be an assistant for a meeting and takes a suspicious letter addressed to Winn. She retreats to the Terrace Café to read it and discovers it’s from Sir Kevin Rodgers, an administrator for the Winns’ charity. Posing as Della, Robin calls him and manages to learn that there are £25,000 unaccounted for and broken promises about celebrity visits. Kevin’s wife reveals more: the Charity Commission is investigating, and she mentions Elspeth Curtis‑Lacey as holding sensitive information. Robin shares the findings with Chiswell, who is thrilled and suggests inviting the trustees to a reception to pressure Elspeth. He even offers Robin a permanent job as his secretary, which she politely declines.
Chapter 26 Summary – Lethal White – Jack in Intensive Care and Robin’s Comfort
Strike spends the night at the hospital beside his nephew Jack, who has undergone emergency surgery for severe appendicitis with sepsis. Watching the child’s still body hooked to machines, he feels powerless and guilty for his lack of family involvement. Through the night, he recalls his own hospital stay after losing his leg in Afghanistan. While waiting for Jack’s condition to improve, he gets messages from Robin, who decides to come support him at the hospital. Robin arrives with hot tea, and her presence deeply comforts him. They talk about family, fear, and past mistakes, while the boy remains sedated. Strike confesses he wants to take Jack to the Imperial War Museum when he recovers. The emotional tension peaks when Robin leaves and, in a moment of misunderstanding, their lips brush. Both are shaken, though they say nothing else.
Chapter 27 Summary – Lethal White – The Broken Marriage and Ghosts of the Past
After spending the day at the hospital, Robin goes to Matthew’s charity cricket match, but he completely ignores her. The next day, they have a fierce argument. Matthew accuses her of prioritizing Strike, while Robin explodes over years of supporting his sports interests without reciprocity. The fight leaves deep scars. Robin sleeps in the guest room and avoids Matthew for days. Meanwhile, in Parliament, a man approaches her—it’s Mitch Patterson, a reporter from The Sun—hinting at an upcoming scandal about her alleged link to Chiswell. Robin, alarmed, informs Strike. Later, she talks to Raphael, who says Chiswell called him drunk, talking about ghosts, Freddie, and Jack o’Kent, a sinister worker from the family estate. Raphael fears his father is losing his mind. Robin begins to suspect something dark connects Kinvara’s baby’s death, Chiswell’s paranoia, and the ongoing blackmail.
Chapter 28 Summary – Lethal White – The Retrieved Mic, Impending Scandal and an Unexpected Recording
Injured and in growing discomfort, Strike focuses on the Chiswell case while fearing he’ll lose everything if Jimmy Knight leaks something to the press. Robin arrives at the agency with new recordings from the hidden mic. Despite the tension, they try to remain composed. The recording reveals that Aamir lives in a house provided by Della and that they share a secret, possibly romantic relationship, which could spark a scandal. Later, Strike receives an urgent call: Jimmy Knight plans to show a banner about Chiswell at an event with Prince Harry, which could destroy the minister’s reputation. Hutchins, the detective assigned to follow him, has failed. Furious, Strike decides to intervene personally. Robin, wearing the green dress Strike gave her years ago, prepares to attend the reception—perhaps to prevent disaster. The chapter ends with the looming threat of a public scandal.
Chapter 29 Summary – Lethal White – Strike Sabotages Jimmy’s Banner
Cormoran Strike arrives at Saint James’s Street after being alerted that Jimmy Knight intends to display a compromising banner about Jasper Chiswell. Limping through the crowd gathered to see Prince Harry, the detective spots the ROC group moving with banners. Jimmy carries his rolled up, hiding its content. As officers keep watch, Strike follows Jimmy, waiting for the right moment to act. When the activist tries to unroll the banner in front of the press, Strike lunges at him, pinning his arm. Jimmy immediately recognizes him and attacks. A violent fight breaks out between them—punches, shoving, shouting. Strike manages to tear the banner but ends up on the ground, bleeding and being kicked. Amid the chaos, a woman screams and police step in, separating the protesters. Hurt but still clutching the remains of the banner, Strike holds on. His mission is accomplished—but at a high physical cost.
Chapter 30 Summary – Lethal White – Robin Joins Chiswell and Kinvara at the Royal Reception
Wearing the elegant green dress, Robin arrives at the Department of Culture, where she meets Izzy and Kinvara. She senses tension between them and notices Kinvara’s disdainful look. Chiswell, handing out the invitations, seems irritated by a logistical mix‑up. In the car ride to the reception, the atmosphere is tense: Kinvara complains about not being informed, and upon learning Raphael wasn’t invited, hints at jealousy toward Robin. Chiswell says Raphael has changed lately, leaving Robin thoughtful. As she watches London pass by through the window, Robin wonders if Strike managed to stop Jimmy. The minister avoids arguing in front of his wife, but the silence in the car exposes their underlying conflict. Robin senses deep fractures in the family and realizes her role amid the chaos is drawing her closer to the heart of the mystery.
Chapter 31 Summary – Lethal White – The Public Fight and Strike’s Collapse
As Jimmy tries to unfurl his banner, Strike lunges at him and prevents him from raising it, triggering a violent fight in front of the crowd. Jimmy throws the first punch, which Strike dodges, but a second one hits him and knocks him down. On the ground, the detective manages to punch Jimmy in the groin and snatch the banner, tearing it apart while other protesters kick him. Covered in blood, with blurred vision, and enduring attacks from all sides, Strike holds out until the police break through. Exhausted, he clings to the remnants of the banner. A woman screams that a man is being attacked, which finally draws the officers’ attention. With great effort, Strike is lifted by the police. As they drag him out of the chaos, he sees his action worked: the banner is destroyed, and the protest disrupted. He has protected Chiswell—but at a steep physical cost.
Chapter 32 Summary – Lethal White – Forced Entry into the Reception and a Growing Threat
Chiswell sees Strike, bloodied in the crowd, and orders him into the official car, surprising everyone, including Kinvara. Reluctantly, the minister is forced to bring him to the reception. As the Mercedes drives on, Flick runs after them, shouting accusations at Chiswell—calling him a murderer and a thief. Police detain her, heightening the tension. At the event entrance, Chiswell improvises a lie to justify Strike’s presence, even invoking the prince. The detective, in pain, climbs the steps with difficulty as Robin supports him. Kinvara demands to know what’s going on, but Chiswell silences her harshly, showing his disdain. Inside, Robin asks what the banner showed. Strike replies: an image of Chiswell hanged, surrounded by dead Black children. The message seems to hint at a hidden racial scandal. Before parting to avoid suspicion, Strike compliments Robin’s dress, revealing a connection that endures despite everything.
Chapter 33 Summary – Lethal White – Charlotte Reappears at the Royal Reception
During the lavish reception honoring Paralympic athletes, Strike tries to remain unnoticed despite his injuries and the discomfort of his prosthesis. While walking through the gallery filled with paintings and servers, he unexpectedly runs into Charlotte Ross, his ex‑girlfriend, visibly pregnant with twins and inappropriately dressed for the event. Their brief conversation reveals unresolved tensions, painful memories, and lingering magnetism. Charlotte, nervous, tries to justify her presence while Strike maintains emotional distance. The situation grows more awkward with Izzy Chiswell’s arrival—she greets Charlotte warmly, unaware of the tension. Geraint Winn approaches Charlotte with suggestive intentions, prompting Strike to escape via a phone call, followed by Charlotte. On the steps, she leans on his arm. Just then, Strike gets an anonymous call: on the other end, a panicked voice screams they’re going to kill him, begging urgently for help.
Chapter 34 Summary – Lethal White – Robin Alone in Chaos and the Discovery of the Corpse
Robin waits for Strike in a café near Jasper Chiswell’s house, anxious about his delay and distracted by lingering thoughts of Charlotte. Her mind replays a tense moment with Matthew, who attempted unwanted intimacy, leaving her emotionally drained. When Strike calls to say he’s delayed by a subway incident, Robin decides to go alone to meet Chiswell. Upon arrival, the door is ajar, and a voice seems to invite her in. In the living room, Robin encounters a terrifying scene: Chiswell is dead, seated in an armchair, his head in a bag connected to a tank, suggesting suicide. Shocked but composed, she calls emergency services, photographs the scene, and finds a letter signed by Kinvara suggesting a definitive break. Tension rises as Robin tries to comprehend what has happened, caught in a case that has now turned deadly.
Chapter 35 Summary – Lethal White – The Crime Scene and Disturbing New Clues
Robin confirms that Chiswell is dead and his body cold. Nearby, she finds a tube of broken pills and a bitter note from Kinvara announcing her departure for Woolstone. As she documents everything with her phone, Strike arrives, still in last night’s suit. Together they examine the scene: a glass with possible orange juice, the threatening letter, and a red mark on the corpse’s hand. Strike explores the house but finds no one. Robin explains she thought she heard him inviting her in—but it was a workman. When Strike mentions Billy Knight’s frantic call the night before saying someone wanted to kill him, Robin confirms he wasn’t with Charlotte, which secretly relieves her. They notice a bent sword in the room, possibly tampered with. With the police already at the door, they agree to report everything—except the surveillance devices. The tragedy dramatically shifts the course of the investigation.
SECOND PART
Chapter 36 Summary – Lethal White – Spies, Suspicions and Revealing Photos
After discovering the body, Strike and Robin are interrogated separately. Robin suspects one of her interviewers is from MI5, while the press explodes with the Chiswell scandal—without revealing the detectives’ link, thanks to a court order pushed by Della Winn. Isolated, both seek refuge: Robin returns to Matthew, who reacts with hypocritical rage; Strike stays with his friends Nick and Ilsa. Analyzing crime scene photos, Strike finds odd details: a glass with residue, a hand mark on Chiswell, and a bent sword once hanging on the wall. Ilsa confirms the court is protecting their involvement. As Robin notices the press stalking her, Strike, concerned, keeps quiet that Barclay is still watching Jimmy and Flick, hoping to find Billy. The clues don’t add up, and Chiswell’s death seems less like suicide and more like a chilling mystery demanding answers.
Chapter 37 Summary – Lethal White – The Funeral, Insomnia and the Weight of Relationships
Chiswell’s funeral in Woolstone proceeds without press. With the investigation ongoing, the country is distracted by the Olympics. Robin, confined at home, insists on returning to work, but Strike forbids it, fearing for her safety. The agency is watched by a supposed busker, and Robin by a young journalist, Mitch Patterson. Seeking normalcy, Strike dines with his sister Lucy and nephew Jack, genuinely enjoying the boy’s affection, though annoyed by his brother‑in‑law Greg’s skepticism. Watching the Olympic opening, he recalls Chiswell’s remarks on military power and thinks of Jimmy Knight. He also reflects on Lorelei, who avoids pressuring him, though he knows she just wants to keep him. Trapped between work, guilt over Charlotte, and concern for Robin, Strike vows to avoid serious relationships—though his life is full of half‑closed ties and bottled‑up emotions.
Chapter 38 Summary – Lethal White – Izzy Suspects Kinvara and Hires Strike
Izzy Chiswell meets Strike at her Chelsea home with tea and confessions. She reveals her father’s autopsy found amitriptyline in his system, but no containers—leading her to suspect Kinvara. She believes Kinvara drugged Jasper and then used the helium bag to kill him, staging a suicide. Izzy recalls a past assault: Kinvara struck Chiswell with a hammer, causing him to lose taste and smell. Despite appearances, she insists Kinvara never loved him and was only after his fortune. She highlights suspicious details like the ajar door and the breakup note. Though Izzy wants to hire Strike to prove Kinvara’s guilt, he agrees only if he can investigate freely. She consents, albeit reluctantly, and promises to tell him the truth about the blackmail—if the rest of the family agrees.
Chapter 39 Summary – Lethal White – Nightmares, Surveillance and a New Investigation Begins
Robin suffers nightmares and anxiety since discovering the body. A young journalist stalks her openly, worsening her fragile emotional state. Matthew, increasingly distant, demands normalcy and insists on attending a social dinner, while Robin seeks relief. When Strike calls with good news, her mood lifts: Izzy has hired them to investigate her father’s death. To proceed, they need access to the forensic report, but police contacts are limited. Robin suggests her friend Vanessa, whose new boyfriend works in forensics. Strike contacts Shanker, who offers a useful lead in exchange for money: they can trade information on a mobster named Ian Nash. Robin is excited to rejoin the case, hiding her emotional strain. She knows she’s not well, but prefers to fake strength rather than lose everything she’s achieved.
Chapter 40 Summary – Lethal White – Robin Escapes in Disguise and They Access the Forensic Report
Determined to meet a forensic pathologist without being followed, Robin executes an elaborate escape from home using a wig and evading the journalist watching her. Her relationship with Matthew remains tense, though somewhat stabilized after a humiliating dinner with Tom and Sarah, which left Matthew vulnerable. At the café, Robin meets Strike and Oliver Bargate, Vanessa’s boyfriend, who gives them key data from Chiswell’s forensic report: he had ingested a lethal dose of amitriptyline but died from asphyxiation. There was no conclusive evidence of assault, though there were facial marks and one on the hand. Fingerprints on objects were expected. Death occurred between 6 and 7 a.m. They also reveal Kinvara was Chiswell’s first call that day. Though everything suggests suicide, too many anomalies remain. Strike clings to the belief that there’s still much to uncover.
Chapter 41 Summary – Lethal White – Strike Breaks Up with Lorelei and a New Infiltration Plan
After a frustrating night with Lorelei, whom he disappoints by taking calls from Izzy and Barclay, Strike realizes the relationship is over. The next morning, he has breakfast alone and searches for news about the Winns, discovering their impending divorce. On the way to Woolstone with Robin, they discuss Geraint Winn’s letter to Izzy, indirectly threatening to expose that Robin, as “Venetia,” obtained information illegally. They also review the Chiswells’ new family dynamics and the upcoming visit to Chiswell House. Strike reveals Barclay is still watching Jimmy Knight and that Flick has started working at a Wiccan jewelry shop. A new plan emerges: Robin will infiltrate the shop as a sales assistant. During the drive, the emotional closeness between Robin and Strike grows. She drives skillfully, allowing Strike to relax and even remove his prosthesis. Amid tea and teasing, the emotional tension between them is palpable—though neither fully confronts it.
Chapter 42 Summary – Lethal White – Chaos at Chiswell House and an Unsettling Truth
Strike and Robin arrive at the dilapidated and chaotic Chiswell House, greeted by the dysfunctional family of the deceased. Kinvara is hostile, while Raphael remains cold and cynical. The conversation turns tense as they discuss Chiswell’s cause of death: some believe it was suicide, others doubt it. Kinvara reveals Jimmy Knight began the blackmail when he showed up at the house a year ago. Tension spikes when Robin mentions the homeopathic pills found next to the body, and Kinvara reacts with surprise: they were hers, and she believes Jasper stole them to stop her from giving them to a horse. Raphael adds that Jasper secretly euthanized an animal Kinvara was caring for, which destabilized her. He also reveals his father asked him to watch Kinvara the morning he died, contradicting her alibi. At the end, Kinvara makes a veiled accusation: Jasper provoked someone dangerous before he died, sowing doubt in everyone.
Chapter 43 Summary – Lethal White – The Cross Discovered at Steda Cottage
Before leaving, Robin visits Chiswell House again and examines an outdated bathroom filled with scattered family photos, recognizing Izzy, Fizzy, Freddie, and Rhiannon Winn at various ages and events. She documents them while reflecting on family ties and tensions with Kinvara. Outside, she briefly interacts with Raphael before joining Strike and Izzy. Together, they follow a dark, overgrown path to Steda Cottage, an abandoned property with broken windows and a neglected garden. In the woods, Robin discovers a hollow overgrown with nettles and weeds, where she finds a small wooden cross with barely visible childlike inscriptions, suggesting an old burial. The discovery is disturbing, hinting at dark family secrets and forgotten deaths. Despite Strike’s pain and Robin’s scratches, they assess the site cautiously, realizing the weight of the mysteries tied to the Chiswells and the enigmatic Kinvara.

They review photos from Freddie’s birthday party and the fencing team, identifying Rhiannon Winn and Jimmy Knight, linking them to past events and blackmail clues. They discuss the Butcher brothers’ involvement and the possible location of Tegan, devising a plan to gather intel without alerting the family. Strike plans to investigate Geraint Winn and Aamir Mallik, while Robin will focus on Flick at the jewelry store. Their analysis of the photos and character connections sheds light on Chiswell’s suicide, family secrets, and outside manipulations, reinforcing their strategy to uncover the truth and safeguard the investigation.
Chapter 45 Summary – Lethal White – Emails from Lorelei and Investigation Planning
The next morning, Strike deals with the pain from the forest hike and focuses on organizing the agency, reviewing leads on Aamir Mallik and others involved in the Chiswell case. He receives a long email from Lorelei analyzing his behavior and relationships, warning him about sabotaging his own happiness and its impact on others. He reflects on the breakup, personal change, and balancing emotions with the ongoing investigation. He calls Robin to confirm Mallik’s identity and review her photos. Robin updates him on her recent interview at the jewelry shop and Mallik’s behavior, including his relationship with Della. Strike evaluates the information, plans his next steps, and analyzes clues about blackmail, alibis, and suspicious behavior, preparing to confront Aamir while adjusting the investigation to the latest findings without endangering those involved.
Chapter 46 Summary – Lethal White – The Confrontation with Aamir Mallik
Four days later, Strike discreetly observes Aamir Mallik’s house from a nearby café, preparing to question him about Jasper Chiswell’s death and potential involvement. After Robin confirms the target, Strike approaches Mallik and gets invited inside. During their conversation, Strike presents photographic evidence, traces social media activity, and follows leads from Mallik’s academic and work history, linking him to Sir Christopher Barrowclough‑Burns and the blackmail scheme. Mallik grows nervous, evades direct questions, and eventually lashes out, throwing objects and hitting Strike, who subdues him using his prosthetic leg. Once calm, Strike obtains key information on alibis and cover‑ups, carefully noting Mallik’s actions and home environment. The visit reveals details about Aamir’s private life, his ties to the Winns, and possible involvement in the conspiracy, confirming that the investigation demands subtlety, observation, and strategic confrontation to uncover the truth behind the Chiswells and the recent events.
Chapter 47 Summary – Lethal White – Bobbi’s Infiltration in Camden
Robin, transformed into Bobbi Cunliffe, begins her trial day at Triquetra, a jewelry shop in Camden Town. Wearing dark makeup, brown contact lenses, a wig, black dress, and flat boots, she blends in with the gothic and emo clientele. The older, disheveled owner explains the rules and introduces her to Flick, her coworker. Robin and Flick bond over labor rights and family life. While assisting tourists and goths, Robin discreetly searches Flick’s bag, finding notes and items linked to Billy and the Chiswell case. Tension rises when Jimmy arrives and argues with Flick—a confrontation Robin records. Amid selling amulets, daggers, and candles, Robin notes crucial details: Flick’s behavior, the stall’s surveillance, and customer interactions, realizing every move could yield vital information to protect Billy and advance the case without being exposed.
Chapter 48 Summary – Lethal White – Strategies and Suspects in the Chiswell Case
At Strike’s office, Robin and Barclay assess Billy’s situation—he’s in a psychiatric hospital after a psychotic episode, obsessed with Strike, and shielded from visitors. They review a missing document implicating Flick and Jimmy in Chiswell’s home, evaluating their access and motives. Strike considers suspects: Flick, Jimmy, and Raphael, analyzing their opportunities, knowledge of Chiswell’s routine, Kinvara’s medication, and the orange juice laced with helium. They discuss how the murder likely wasn’t impulsive but premeditated, and explore links between blackmail and family resentment, including Aamir Mallik and Geraint Winn. Strike and Robin debate logistics, methods, and possible manipulation, concluding the killer needed insider knowledge of the house and Chiswell’s habits. Every detail—keys, pills, routines—helps decode opportunities, motives, and the suspects’ connections to Chiswell’s mysterious death.
Chapter 49 Summary – Lethal White – Revelations from the Chiswell Gallery
Strike visits the Drummond art gallery and meets Henry Drummond, who recounts events leading to Jasper Chiswell’s death, detailing Raphael’s behavior, Kinvara’s conflict, and Freddie’s death—Drummond’s godson—linked to the Winns. Drummond describes intervening in gallery incidents, including Raphael’s encounters with young employees, which he discreetly reported to Jasper. Strike reviews key dates and locations, like the final visit to Chiswell on Friday, June 22, and the handling of valuable property and paintings, noting Drummond’s cautious sharing of sensitive information. They discuss blackmail, the legality of Chiswell’s past actions, and the family’s moral ambiguity, emphasizing Raphael’s defiance compared to others’ integrity. Strike realizes that secrets, responsibility, and family dynamics are central to understanding the suspects’ motives and access to Chiswell’s home, helping to connect the dots between events and potential perpetrators.
Chapter 50 Summary – Lethal White – Strike’s Emotional Encounter with Charlotte
Strike meets Charlotte at Franco’s, where she appears pale and heavily pregnant, expressing despair and bitterness over their past relationship. They talk about past choices, betrayals, marriages, and pregnancies, as Charlotte oscillates between tears, frustration, and moments of control. Strike recalls earlier encounters—intimate moments, conflicts with her husband Jago, and the complex emotions she projects onto him. Despite his resolve, Charlotte confesses her fear of dependency and desire for freedom, exposing the vulnerability of a woman torn between her past and looming motherhood. Strike, attentive to her words, gestures, and the movements of her belly, remains calm and composed, understanding the emotional weight of the moment. The meeting ends with a delicate exchange of gestures and words, as both wrestle with unresolved feelings and an unbreakable, enduring bond.

Robin accompanied Flick to the party in her Hackney flat, where activists, anarchists and ROC friends mingled. The night was marked by political conversation with Alf, the anarchist, about community organization and rejection of leaders, and by Flick’s confidences about her complicated relationship with Jimmy Knight and her brother Billy’s behavior. Amid the chaos of the party, Robin discreetly explored Flick’s bedroom and the bathroom, where she ultimately discovered the sanitary pad containing Jasper Chiswell’s farewell note, with Latin inscriptions and references to the family and addresses, information that proved crucial to the investigation. Robin photographed the note and sent it to Strike, consolidating a significant breakthrough in the case despite the noise, darkness and crowd at the party.

Cormoran Strike, after receiving Robin’s message at one in the morning, reviews Chiswell’s note and reflects on its meaning, including the Latin inscription “I hate and I love.” Strike considers the connections between the suspects, organizing his observations into three categories: people, places and things. He recognizes pairs of those involved in the blackmail and the family relationships that could have motivated Chiswell’s death. He plans to contact Wardle, Izzy, Barclay, Raphael, Della and Billy, while evaluating Flick’s access to the note. He reflects on patterns, possible clues and the complexity of the case, showing his meticulous attention to detail and preparation for the next steps in the investigation.

Strike obtains crucial information about Aamir’s alibi and whereabouts, while observing Della’s emotional fragility and protective instinct. The conversation combines revelations about the Chiswell family, Geraint’s conduct and the circumstances of the minister’s death, laying the groundwork for the next steps in the investigation and locating Aamir.
Chapter 55 Summary – Lethal White – Robin Confronts Matthew and Leaves Her Marriage
Robin waits for Matthew, aware that their marriage has fractured beyond return. Two messages from her husband, full of excuses, fail to hide the truth: he is lying. She confirms it by calling Tom, who answers sober from a quiet place. When Matthew enters the house and sees the suitcases, Robin informs him she is leaving. He tries to deny it all, but finally admits his infidelity with Sarah. Robin, with crushing clarity, rejects any reconciliation. The argument escalates, and Matthew reveals his cruelest side, insulting her and belittling her work with Strike. She reminds him that she stayed out of pity after his illness, but that she no longer feels love. Under pressure and with a veiled threat of violence, Robin stands her ground, determined to go. She leaves for the taxi amid tears, and while Matthew shouts that he still loves her, she does not look back, sure she has made the right decision.

He claims to have witnessed the crime as a drugged child led by his brother and a group of adults. He describes the victim as a dark‑haired Asian girl and remembers how they wrapped her in a pink blanket and buried her near his home. Although he confuses details, he mentions the Chiswells and alludes to his father doing favors for them. He also acknowledges having carved the horse symbol while in hiding, confirming his presence at the scene. Faced with the doctors’ doubts, Strike promises he will find out the truth. Billy, vulnerable but resolute, accepts the promise as his last yearning for justice.

Robin desperately searches for an affordable rental room but only finds precarious options. While declining Matthew’s calls, she focuses on her work, clinging to the only thing she feels solid. She has contacted Raphael Chiswell and Tegan Butcher for new interviews. When Strike calls, Robin learns disturbing details revealed by Billy: a possible child victim buried near the White Horse. Strike considers digging, although he does not fully believe the story. Robin, shocked, reminds him they must alert the police if they think it is real. Agreeing to meet with Tegan and visit the hollow, Robin ends the call and prepares to meet Raphael, carrying the weight of her personal life while staying firm in her professional role.
Chapter 58 Summary – Lethal White – Dinner with Raphael Reveals Chiswell Family Secrets
Robin meets Raphael Chiswell in an elegant, nostalgic Vietnamese restaurant. The tension between them lightens when Robin reveals she has left her husband. Raphael, surprised, opens up more and confirms he visited the Ebury Street house only once. He explains that his father used him as a messenger for awkward tasks and that on the morning of his death he asked him to recover a valuable family diamond necklace he feared losing if Kinvara left him. Raphael claims Kinvara tried to sell it and that Drummond was the one who alerted his father. He also confesses that many in the Chiswell family had reasons to hate the patriarch and reveals a tragic story about Rhiannon Winn, Freddie’s partner, who committed suicide after a cruel humiliation at a party. The information about blackmail, family secrets and betrayals reinforces the complexity of the case. Robin, though emotionally exhausted, manages to extract crucial details that could change the course of the investigation.

Cormoran Strike receives a call from Robin while drinking in a Tottenham pub. She shares details of the conversation with Raphael, which sparks new ideas in his mind. Intrigued by the connections between the cases, Strike reflects on the use of chemical agents in Chiswell’s death and the girl strangled on the hill, noting a pattern of “pairs.” Returning to his notes on earlier interviews, he recalls testimony from Della and Oliver and refocuses on the links between suspects. Amid the pub’s bustle, with noisy students and backpackers looking for tables, Strike remains absorbed, obsessed with the scattered clues. Finally, he writes down a new objective: to confirm Francesca, Raphael’s lover’s story. The intensity of the case engulfs him again, pushing Charlotte out of his mind and redirecting his attention toward solving a mystery that now seems to have a clearer and more disturbing central axis than he had thought.
Chapter 60 Summary – Lethal White – New Theories, Dead Ends and a Decisive Appointment
An official statement about Jasper Chiswell’s death confirms there is no suspicion of foreign terrorism, causing Strike concern about the investigation being prematurely closed. His call to Wardle yields no useful information, and the tension rises when he learns that Francesca Pulham, key to his new theory, is in Florence, unreachable. Frustration grows over the lack of answers from Geraint Winn and the impossibility of arranging interviews. Robin, busy watching Dr. Chungo, gives him good news: she has secured an appointment with Tegan Butcher at the Newbury racecourse. Together they plan to also visit Steda Cottage, although Strike doubts there is anything buried in the hollow. However, out of respect for the promise made to Billy, he decides to continue. The conversation reveals tensions between Robin and Matthew, Strike’s suspicions about a possible pregnancy and an emotionally tense atmosphere, while the investigation remains in a forced pause, awaiting the next move.
Chapter 61 Summary – Lethal White – Robin Collapses After a Violent Confrontation with Geraint Winn
On Saturday, Strike arrives in a foul mood at Wembley station after discovering that Mitch Patterson has been watching the agency; he suspects the private investigator was hired by the press or someone with darker intentions. Robin, visibly exhausted and haggard, waits for him in the Land Rover. On the way to the racecourse, an unexpected call surprises them: Geraint Winn bursts in with violent and sexist insults. Overwhelmed, Robin responds with fury and loses emotional control. After a panic attack, she stops the car and walks away on foot, ashamed and afraid. Strike catches up with her and, after comforting her, she reveals her separation from Matthew. They talk for the first time about her panic attacks, and Strike confesses that he also suffered anxiety after losing his leg. Their empathy deepens. Robin admits she has found a room to rent in Kilburn and that she does not want pity, only to keep working. The conversation seals a new intimacy between them.
Chapter 62 Summary – Lethal White – Robin and Strike Seal a Personal and Professional Alliance in Newbury
At the Newbury racecourse, Robin and Strike arrive to meet Tegan Butcher. While waiting, Robin fears Strike might want to relegate her to administrative tasks, but he has other intentions. Despite their differences and recent conflicts, they sincerely express how much they value working together. Strike offers Robin a small bottle of champagne to celebrate her bravery in separating from Matthew and acknowledges that she is indispensable to the agency. She, moved, reveals how she hid her panic attacks for fear of Matthew’s judgment. Strike makes it clear that he needs her to take care of her mental health to continue working on dangerous cases. In the middle of the conversation, they confess recent breakups and share their vision for the future of the agency. Robin mentions a connection with the phrase “Blanc de blancs” seen in a hotel, triggering new associations in Strike’s mind. Tegan Butcher finally appears, ushering in the next big discovery.
Chapter 63 Summary – Lethal White – The Revealing Interview with Tegan Butcher at the Racecourse
Robin and Strike meet with Tegan Butcher, a young former employee of the Chiswells, at the racecourse. Although nervous, Tegan shares valuable information about Kinvara Chiswell, revealing her volatile character, her paranoia over horses and her erratic behavior the night before Jasper Chiswell’s death. She confirms that Kinvara returned unexpectedly from London and stayed all night at home, strengthening her alibi. Tegan recounts a heated argument between Kinvara and Raphael Chiswell over a family necklace she tried to sell. She also mentions a violent episode from the past when Kinvara struck her husband with a hammer after euthanizing her favorite mare. Finally, she reveals a dark secret: Jack O’Kent made pitchforks for export, and his brothers helped transport them. Tegan insists the whole village knew about it, including Jimmy Knight. Before leaving, she shows Strike a recent photo of Suki Lewis, alive and living under another name, disproving a key part of Billy Knight’s testimony.
Chapter 64 Summary – Lethal White – Strike and Robin Uncover the Secret Pitchfork Business
While drinking champagne at the racecourse, Strike and Robin connect vital information. Tegan’s revelation about the pitchforks leads Robin to remember that Flick Purdue mentioned a “horse” as a distinguishing mark. Strike deduces that Jack O’Kent marked the pitchforks with the White Horse symbol, and Billy helped carve it. This would explain Billy’s obsession and his carving at the hospital. The detectives believe that Chiswell continued selling the pitchforks after Jack’s death without sharing the profits with his children, triggering Jimmy’s blackmail. Although the export was legal, Chiswell concealed the sales and tried to prevent pitchfork photos from reaching the public. Billy’s phrase “I hated putting the horse on them” takes on new meaning. Robin realizes Raphael may have lied about his visit to Oxfordshire. Strike, increasingly close to a solid theory, decides to inform Izzy Chiswell of Tegan’s testimony and suggests the mystery is about to be solved.
Chapter 65 Summary – Lethal White – Night Excavation in Woolstone and the Unexpected Finding
Robin, Strike and Sam Barclay arrive at the hollow near Steda Cottage at night to fulfill the promise made to Billy Knight. After hours of exhausting work, they pull nettles, cut roots, and dig with difficulty. Robin, determined to participate actively, ignores the pain of her blisters. Strike, forcing his prosthetic, eventually gives in to the pain. In the darkness and effort, Robin finds a pink blanket in the earth. The discovery halts everything: under the blanket, there is not a human body but a horse skull. It has multiple bullet holes, suggesting it was not euthanized by a veterinarian. Despite the disappointment, the find confirms part of Billy’s testimony: there was a burial. Before they can fill in the pit, Kinvara’s dogs are released. The group disperses to avoid being caught at the scene. Strike and Robin improvise an alibi, while Barclay tries to escape unseen.
Chapter 66 Summary – Lethal White – Robin Discovers an Intruder and a Key Painting in Chiswell House
While distracting Kinvara, Strike and Robin enter her house pretending to have chased intruders through the woods. Strike manages to confiscate an illegal revolver she intended to use for self‑defense. While Kinvara and Strike inspect the horses, Robin, alone in the house, hears suspicious footsteps upstairs. Grabbing a paperweight, she stealthily climbs. In the master bedroom, she finds the painting The Mare’s Duel, which no longer hangs in the lounge, confirming its recent relocation. She suspects someone is hiding in another room. As she descends to avoid being seen, she returns just in time to avoid discovery. Kinvara reappears with the revolver, but Strike persuades her to hand it over. Amid the tension, the terrier continues barking in the woods, likely after Barclay. Kinvara claims to have sold the painting, but her nervousness betrays something more. Robin and Strike, feigning normality, manage to stay inside without arousing suspicion.
Chapter 67 Summary – Lethal White – Kinvara’s Hidden Confession and the Key to the Lost Painting
Kinvara holds Rattenbury while Robin returns, pretending to have gone to the bathroom, concealing the bronze frog she had taken as a weapon upstairs. Strike, sore from digging in the hollow, removes his prosthetic and uses Kinvara’s vulnerability to interrogate her. Between whisky, nerves and aggression, the woman reveals details of the blackmail related to the pitchforks made by Jack O’Kent, the money demanded by Jimmy and the involvement of Samuel Murape, whose hanging triggered Jasper’s fear that his connection to the business would be exposed. Later, Kinvara admits Raphael tried to prevent her from taking the family necklace because his mother had replaced the real diamonds with cubic zirconia. The account culminates when the widow claims that Jasper committed suicide, while Robin shows Strike the photo of the painting hidden in the bed, proof that someone was concealing it.
Chapter 68 Summary – Lethal White – Scotland Yard Dismantles the Plan to Murder Jasper
Strike and Robin are invited to New Scotland Yard, where they watch the interrogation of Kinvara, now in custody, while Chief Inspector McMurran states she will eventually confess. In the coordination center, the detectives see evidence of the supposed suicide: the alibi staged with security cameras, the handout to the beggar, the witnesses sought by Kinvara at every step and the carton of juice without traces of amitriptyline left as a trap. The police confirm the mortar with powder was tampered with and Kinvara could only prepare the poison with access to the key and knowledge of the medicine. They also reveal the call made from prepaid mobiles to Winn and Kinvara, and the connection with Flick, who stole the note that Chiswell wrote after calling the Le Manoir Hotel. Robin receives confirmation that The Mare’s Duel might be a Stubbs worth millions, triggering a new motive.
Chapter 69 Summary – Lethal White – Robin Is Kidnapped by Raphael on a Houseboat
Robin goes to Little Venice to meet Matthew, after being pressured with threats of leaks to the press, but Strike alerts her by phone that it is not her husband. Robin is attacked and thrown into the houseboat Odile, where Raphael points a gun at her. Struck and out of breath, she stays calm and forces him to talk, revealing his involvement in the blackmail, the manipulation of Kinvara, the secret relationship begun after noticing the value of the painting, and the murder of Jasper, whom he suffocated when he woke up too soon. While trying to justify the crime, he also admits he manipulated Flick, stole the credit card and planned to kill those who knew too much. When he prepares to execute her, Strike bursts in after deducing the deception of the messages. The revolver was unloaded since Chiswell House and Raphael is arrested amid insults and struggle.
ONE MONTH LATER
Epilogue Summary – Lethal White – The Truth About Raphael and the Buried Horse
In a rainy Chelsea restaurant, Strike and Robin meet with Izzy Chiswell to close the final loose end of the case: Billy Knight’s traumatic memory. Izzy reveals that the “girl” Billy saw being strangled was actually Raphael disguised in a cruel prank by Freddie and his friends. Years earlier, drunk and high, they took him to Dragon Hill and Freddie, irritated by his crying, strangled him until he passed out. Billy, under the influence of drugs, witnessed everything and confused the scene. He also saw Jack help bury the mare Spotty, shot by Freddie, which ended up merging the memories. Strike confirms that Raphael only acted once he learned of the valuable hidden painting, motivated by greed. After the meal, Robin and Strike walk in the rain, talking about their lives and plans. Although everything has ended, the work continues. Passing a mansion, Robin does not see the engraved swans, already immersed in her next case.

FAQs – Chapter by Chapter Summary – Lethal White
Why does Billy remember a girl in a pink blanket if the story was supposedly about a boy?
Billy’s memory, while fractured, is anchored in something real. The girl he recalls might be Suki Lewis, an androgynous child who vanished in 1992. Her appearance could have led to the confusion, especially in a traumatized child’s mind. The pink blanket is a vivid symbol—one that ties his memory to a crime buried under silence. This detail pushes Strike to consider that Billy’s visions might not be delusions, but echoes of an actual murder no one wanted to uncover.
What is the connection between the Chiswell family and the Knight brothers?
The Knights worked for the Chiswells under dubious conditions. Their father lived rent-free on Chiswell land, and Jimmy often hinted at a sinister debt owed by the aristocrats. This toxic dynamic—rich landowners versus exploited labor—feeds Jimmy’s rage and becomes the foundation for his blackmail. The past between both families is murky, entangled in power, abuse, and secrets that echo in the present investigation.
What makes Raphael Chiswell the perfect suspect—yet invisible?
Raphael hides in plain sight: handsome, damaged, and disarmingly vulnerable. With a criminal past, he’s the last person anyone suspects of elegance or planning. But his resentment toward his father and intimate knowledge of the household allow him to orchestrate the murder and stage it as a suicide. His charm cloaks his motives, making it harder for Robin and Strike to see him as the killer—until the final pieces fall into place.
Why does Robin stay at the agency when her marriage is falling apart?
Robin’s loyalty to Strike goes beyond work—it’s rooted in mutual respect, emotional safety and the sense of purpose she lacks with Matthew. Her marriage deteriorates under control, jealousy and emotional neglect. In contrast, her partnership with Strike—however complicated—offers real connection and trust. How does Geraint Winn’s involvement deepen the corruption theme?
Geraint Winn, the manipulative husband of a respected minister, embodies the rot beneath political power.
