Prologue Summary – Lord of Chaos – The First Message
Demandred arrives at Shayol Ghul and descends into the Pit of Doom, where he is received by Shaidar Haran, an unusually tall Myrddraal. As he moves forward, he perceives the growing influence of the Great Lord and observes the forging of swords for the Myrddraal, a dark process that involves human sacrifices. Inside the mountain, the heat intensifies, and the voice of the Great Lord resounds in his mind, granting him orders and a glimpse of his favor. He is informed of Rahvin’s death and the disappearance of Lanfear, Asmodean, and Moghedien. The voice torments him with ecstatic pain while speaking of the fallen Chosen and offers him a tempting promise: the possibility of becoming the Nae'blis, the supreme lieutenant of the Great Lord. Consumed by ambition, Demandred swears obedience and submits to the power that will soon shroud the world in shadows. Elayne continues experimenting with ter’angreal, frustrated by her failures and the pressure from the Aes Sedai. Despite her achievements, she feels the praise is undeserved. She seeks out Min before her departure to Caemlyn, and both reaffirm their friendship, despite sharing their love for Rand. Min, who must spy for the embassy, promises not to reveal her vision of her fate with him. Meanwhile, Faile assumes responsibilities in Two Rivers while Perrin evades his duties. The arrival of refugees and the unease over the abnormal weather affect the region. The Wisdoms, concerned, seek safety with Faile. Gawyn, leading the Younglings, protects the Aes Sedai while negotiating with the Shaido Wise Ones. A peddler reveals a terrible rumor to him: Queen Morgase is dead, and Elayne might be as well. Gawyn swears vengeance against Rand, who now reigns in Andor. Katerine Alruddin and other Aes Sedai negotiate with the Shaido Aiel, led by Sevanna, who demands to see Rand al’Thor defeated before sealing an alliance. Meanwhile, Galina Casban, also of the Red Ajah, reveals her allegiance to the Black Ajah and stresses that Rand must be protected for Elaida’s plans. Sevanna, ambitious and cunning, seeks to consolidate her power among the Aiel, planning to capture Rand with the help of a mysterious object. In Amadicia, Morgase faces the difficult choice of accepting Pedron Niall’s protection or seeking another way out while uncovering the truth about the fall of Caemlyn and Rand’s rise to power. Elsewhere, the Forsaken Mesaana, Semirhage, and Demandred receive a message from the Dark One: “Let the Lord of Chaos rule.” Meanwhile, Osan’gar and Aran’gar, resurrected in new bodies, prepare to carry out their secret mission.
Chapter 1 Summary – Lord of Chaos – The Lion on the Hill
Rand al'Thor trains with the sword in the Palace of Caemlyn, surrounded by Andoran nobles and Aiel Maidens. Although his skill is impressive, Bashere warns him that fighting multiple opponents is suicidal. Rand, still wounded and tormented by Lews Therin's voice in his mind, knows his destiny is greater than the sword. Amid flattery and intrigue, the nobles try to gain his favor while he manipulates them in his power game. Sulin, leader of the Maidens, shows disdain for his use of the sword, reminding him of the Aiel's disapproval of that weapon. When tension in the court is at its peak, a soldier arrives with shocking news: Mazrim Taim, the false Dragon, has arrived at the palace. Bashere, sent to hunt him down by order of Queen Tenobia, reacts with fury. Rand, however, decides to receive him, aware that he could be a valuable ally or a dangerous enemy.
Chapter 2 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Another Traveler Arrives
Mazrim Taim, proud and serene, is escorted to Rand, facing Bashere's hostility and the nobles' fear. Taim acknowledges Rand's authority and submits to his will, offering his knowledge of the One Power. Rand, aware that he needs men who can channel for the Last Battle, accepts him with distrust. As a token of loyalty, Taim delivers a cuendillar seal, one of the fragments that keep the Dark One imprisoned, confirming that the prison is weakening. Rand, struggling with Lews Therin's voice in his mind, nearly breaks it in a fit, but Bashere stops him. He knows time is running out and the war against the Shadow is approaching. Distrustful but without alternatives, he decides to take Taim to a secret farm where men who can channel will be trained.
Chapter 3 Summary – Lord of Chaos – A Woman's Eyes
Rand opens a gateway with Saidin to travel with Taim and the Maidens to a clearing in the forest. Despite his control over the Power, he still feels the Dark One's taint in every weave he handles. Aviendha reaches him before he can leave, and Rand feels the tension of her presence. Upon arriving at the farm where men with the ability to channel will be trained, Taim shows skepticism about the recruits' usefulness, but Rand insists that all be tested. Damer Flinn, a war veteran, surprises by demonstrating potential. Taim takes charge of conducting the tests while Rand warns him about the possibility of a Forsaken trying to infiltrate. Before leaving, Rand feels Lews Therin's presence in his mind, increasing his paranoia and distrust toward Taim. Determined, he vows that these men will be his army for the Last Battle.
Chapter 4 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Sense of Humor
Rand arrives at the Tear camp, where an army is preparing for the invasion of Illian. The Tairen and Cairhienin nobles discuss strategy, but the Aiel feel ignored. Rand learns of the betrayal of several High Lords, who have declared their opposition and fled to Haddon Mirk. Without delay, he strips them of their titles and decrees their capture. Weiramon insists on an immediate attack against Illian, but Rand rejects it, assuring that Mat will lead the army when the time is right. During the meeting with the Aiel chiefs, they also press for an attack, but Rand remains firm. Back in Caemlyn, he avoids Aviendha, aware of the danger her closeness implies. As he falls asleep, he reflects on his strategic deception: Sammael will fall without even understanding the trick laid for him, a masterstroke with which he plans to destroy his enemy before he can react.
Chapter 5 Summary – Lord of Chaos – A Different Dance
At the Golden Stag inn, Mat Cauthon enjoys the atmosphere while dealing with the stifling heat. Accompanied by Talmanes, Daerid, and Nalesean, he discusses bets and his unusual luck in gambling. His attention shifts to Betse Silvin, a charming barmaid with whom he shares a lively dance that transports him to memories of past times. Later, while patrolling the city with Edorion, Mat rescues Olver, a refugee boy mistreated by two arrogant Hunters of the Horn, whom he expels from Maerone. At the river, he is surprised to observe a Sea Folk ship, an uncommon event far from the sea. At dawn, without rest, he leads the Red Hand Company's departure southward. As the troop marches to the rhythm of drums and cheers, Mat reflects on the dangerous game he's trapped in, with Sammael lurking and Rand weaving plans larger than he imagined.
Chapter 6 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Threads Woven with Shadows
Sammael cautiously traverses Graendal's luxurious palace, always distrustful. His hostess's extravagance irritates him, but he knows every detail is calculated. Graendal, with her carefree demeanor, hints at the growing threat of Rand al'Thor, suggesting that many of the Chosen have already fallen because of him. Sammael resists accepting that a mere boy could be so dangerous, but his rage and pride drive him to want to eliminate him. Meanwhile, Graendal subtly manipulates him, ensuring his focus remains on Rand. Elsewhere, Semirhage mercilessly tortures a captured Aes Sedai, extracting information with ruthless precision. The presence of Shaidar Haran, a Myrddraal with unusual status, suggests that the Great Lord's plans go beyond what the Chosen comprehend. Amid intrigues and betrayals, each plays their part in the war for control of the world.
Chapter 7 Summary – Lord of Chaos – A Matter of Thought
In Salidar, Elayne and Nynaeve suffer the heat in their modest room while working with ter’angreal. Nynaeve insists on keeping the a’dam nearby to control Moghedien, who fears Birgitte. Using special rings, both enter Tel’aran’rhiod, the World of Dreams, where Siuan and Leane await them to meet with Sheriam and other Aes Sedai. They discuss Egwene, the division of the Tower, and Elaida's plans. During their exploration in the White Tower, the Aes Sedai become trapped in a terrifying nightmare with trollocs. Elayne and Siuan manage to save them by reminding them it's not real. Upon waking, Elayne dream-travels to Caemlyn, where she discovers Rand has replaced the Lion Throne. She vows to protect him and bond him as her Warder. After her departure, Demandred, hidden in the shadows, watches her intentions with interest and whispers, "Let the Lord of Chaos rule."
Chapter 8 Summary – Lord of Chaos – The Storm Gathers
Nynaeve awakens with a sense of an impending storm and recalls her fruitless search in Tel'aran'rhiod, where she found only traces of Leane and filth in Tar Valon. While discussing with Elayne Sheriam's warnings and nightmares, she mentions having seen Rand in the White Tower, though she doubts its veracity. Throughout the day, she observes how Moghedien remains dominated by the a’dam, while Myrelle acts suspiciously. She also witnesses Logain's testimony, revealing the Red Ajah's manipulation to turn him into a false Dragon, scandalizing the nobles of Altara. Meanwhile, Siuan and Gareth Bryne discuss strategies, evidencing their tense relationship. Everything changes when Elayne bursts in with alarming news: an emissary from Elaida has arrived in Salidar, unleashing uncertainty among the Aes Sedai, who must now decide how to respond to this unexpected move from the White Tower.
Chapter 9 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Plans
Pedron Niall cautiously analyzes the political situation, receiving reports of unrest in Altara and Murandy, Rand's apparent stalemate in Caemlyn, and latent conflict in the Borderlands. Balwer informs him that in Salidar, a rumor circulates that the Red Ajah manipulated Logain, which could weaken the White Tower. Aware of this information's potential, Niall plans to use it to undermine Elaida's authority while continuing to weave war strategies. Meanwhile, Morgase, still held in Amador, discovers her son Galad has joined the Whitecloaks and that Rand has taken the Lion Throne in Caemlyn. During a hunt, she hears rumors of Andoran nobles supporting Rand and decides not to be a pawn in Niall's plans. Determined to regain her independence, she orders her return to the city, as the war for control of Andor and the world intensifies.
Chapter 10 Summary – Lord of Chaos – A King's Duty
Rand walks through the Caemlyn palace surrounded by Maidens, Aiel, and Bashere's escort, feeling the weight of governance. While dealing with servant matters and rumors of conflicts in the Borderlands, he hears about strange events in the city: miracles and tragedies linked to his presence. Bael and Bashere warn him about hidden enemies and the danger of rumors inciting rebellion. Rand orders the arrest of those responsible and reaffirms his control. At the Culain's Hound inn, he discovers youths from Two Rivers heading to Tar Valon, including Mat's sister. There, he confronts Verin and Alanna, who reveal their decision to avoid the White Tower. But in an unexpected twist, Alanna bonds him as her Warder without his consent. Furious, Rand isolates her with a shield and, disconcerted by the bond, orders both Aes Sedai to stay away from him.
Chapter 11 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Lessons and Teachers
Verin and Alanna try to calm the young women from Two Rivers after the shocking encounter with Rand. The Aes Sedai discuss their next move, weighing the control they can exert over the Dragon Reborn. Alanna, still emotionally affected, attempts to justify her decision to bond him. Verin, more pragmatic, evaluates the implications of the act and Rand's growing power. Meanwhile, Rand, tormented by Alanna's intrusion into his mind, decides to distance himself from Caemlyn and Travel to his secret base. At the farm where he trains men capable of channeling, he observes Taim's harsh methods and the recruits' rapid evolution. After a conversation with Taim, he allows him to recruit more men with the promise of matching the White Tower's power in less than a year. Though Rand remains cautious, he understands he needs an army of channelers to survive what's coming.
Chapter 12 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Questions and Answers
Nynaeve and Elayne attempt to eavesdrop on the Hall's secret meeting with Elaida's envoy, Tarna Feir, but wards prevent them from spying with the Power. Frustrated, Elayne leaves to teach about ter’angreal, while Nynaeve must assist Sitters Janya and Delana with their notes. Moghedien, still a prisoner, suggests they both flee to Caemlyn with Rand before the Aes Sedai hand them over to Elaida as an offering. The mention of Elayne's possible fate unsettles Nynaeve. After talking with Birgitte about a possible escape, she faces Janya and Delana's probing questions about Rand but reveals no new information. Later, she spies on Tarna, who pressures the Hall to return to the Tower. Finally, Theodrin surprises her and takes her to another session to try to break her block on channeling, leaving her exhausted and more insecure than ever.
Chapter 13 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Under the Dust
Theodrin tries to unlock Nynaeve's ability to channel without anger, but her methods, including throwing a bucket of water at her, fail. Exhausted, Nynaeve argues with Elayne about fleeing, fearing the Salidar Aes Sedai will betray them. Tarna Feir visits Nynaeve and proposes she return to the Tower, assuring that Elaida wants to guide Rand. Nynaeve rejects the offer, but Tarna's warning unsettles her. At night, she and Elayne enter Tel’aran’rhiod seeking information. Following necessity, they find a room in Tar Valon filled with ter’angreal and then a storehouse in Ebou Dar where they find a mysterious crystal bowl. They believe it has to do with the weather and decide to travel there to find it in the real world. Now, they know their destination is Ebou Dar, and Nynaeve is pleased because it takes them away from Salidar's uncertainty.
Chapter 14 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Dreams and Nightmares
Egwene explores Tel’aran’rhiod and discovers more unknown people moving in the World of Dreams. Her unease grows upon seeing two unknown women lurking around the White Tower and other key places. While trying to gather information about Salidar and the Tower, she is unintentionally drawn into Gawyn's dream, where he imagines rescuing her from Rand in a deadly duel. Trapped in the dream, Egwene struggles to escape, but Gawyn's love keeps her ensnared. When she finally surrenders, she merges into the dream with him, admitting her love. Meanwhile, in Salidar, Nynaeve and Elayne are awakened by a malign bubble. Objects come to life and attack people, causing chaos and death. Nynaeve tries to channel, but her block prevents her from accessing Saidar. Anaiya organizes circles of channelers to curb the threat. Finally, the bubble dissipates, but it leaves death and destruction in the village, reinforcing the sense of lurking danger.
Chapter 15 Summary – Lord of Chaos – A Heap of Sand
Egwene wakes up after her experience in Gawyn's dream, still affected by her feelings. In the morning, the Wise Ones insist she rest before returning to Tel’aran’rhiod. They also discuss the growing dissent among the Aiel due to the truth revealed by Rand about their history. Egwene takes advantage of the conversation to ask about shared dreams and learns that intense feelings can draw someone into another's dream. The confirmation leaves her reflecting on her love for Gawyn. In Salidar, Nynaeve and Elayne seek to convince the Aes Sedai to send them to Ebou Dar to retrieve a ter’angreal that can affect the weather, but their requests are denied. Their confrontation with Sheriam and the Sitters leads to punishment: cleaning pots in the kitchen. While Elayne accepts the punishment with determination, Nynaeve burns with frustration. Meanwhile, the Hall maintains its indecision on how to act with Elaida and Rand, leaving Salidar in a state of uncertainty and fear.

During the conversation, Dyelin mentions Rand’s resemblance to Tigraine, the missing Andoran heir, leading him to reflect on his origins. A messenger from Sammael offers a truce, but Rand rejects it, determined to avenge the deaths caused by the Forsaken. Chapter 17 Summary – Lord of Chaos – The Wheel of Life and the Weight of Power

He observes how nobles and commoners alike are adopting aspects of Aiel culture, including a distorted version of ji’e’toh, which irritates Rhuarc. Berelain informs him of the growing threat posed by Caraline Damodred and Toram Riatin, as well as the Shaido establishing permanent strongholds in Cairhien and conflicts in Shara, attributed to his influence. Rhuarc reports that Mangin, an Aiel, has killed a man for wearing a dragon tattoo without the right to do so. Though Rand recognizes Mangin’s honor, he orders his execution, confronting the weight of justice and the consequences of his decisions, while Lews Therin’s voice whispers in his mind.
Chapter 18 Summary – Lord of Chaos – A Moment of Solitude
After Mangin’s execution, Rand, with Lews Therin’s voice echoing in his mind, decides to visit the school in Cairhien. Accompanied only by two Aiel, he enjoys a fleeting sense of independence, though he still feels Alanna’s presence and the lurking madness of Lews Therin. At the school, Idrien Tarsin and other scholars show him remarkable inventions: an advanced printing press, an efficient plow, and steam-powered experiments. Rand speaks with Herid Fel, an eccentric scholar, about the Last Battle and the Dark One’s seals, uncovering new mysteries. Meanwhile, Egwene searches for Rand in the Sun Palace, but their meeting turns tense when he asks for information about Elayne, and she refuses to provide it.

Rand has unsettling dreams about the Age of Legends and wakes up exhausted. Ignoring his breakfast, he prepares to return to Caemlyn. In the palace, nobles and Wise Ones surround him, each with their own agendas. Berelain informs him of Mangin’s execution, and Rand reaffirms his decision to treat the Aiel as he would any others. Before leaving, the Wise Ones share disturbing visions: a man with an invisible dagger meant for Rand and an object called “the bowl” that could either save or doom the world. Aviendha accompanies him back to Caemlyn, though she seems troubled by her own toh. Rand struggles with his feelings for her, while Lews Therin whispers dark thoughts in his mind. Meanwhile, Aviendha torments herself over her debt to Elayne and Rand, seeking a way to repay it without breaking her honor.

At the same time, the Asha’man train in the Black Tower under Mazrim Taim’s strict supervision, as he pushes the recruits beyond their limits. In Cairhien, Berelain plays a dangerous political game while attempting to consolidate her influence. Egwene, from Salidar, continues to strengthen her position among the rebel Aes Sedai, knowing that her fate is intertwined with Rand’s. Meanwhile, Perrin and Faile face new tensions in their relationship due to differences in their responsibilities and priorities. Rand feels the pressure of unfolding events and the need to act before the forces of Chaos overwhelm him. The Dragon’s sword is forged not only in battle but in the decisions that shape the world.
Chapter 21 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Answering with Steel
Rand receives a visit from envoys from Salidar, Aes Sedai who seek to negotiate with him, but he does not trust them. He knows that every word hides a trap and that his power both frightens and tempts them. Meanwhile, in the Black Tower, Mazrim Taim tests the new Asha’man, demanding quick and brutal results. One of the recruits shows exceptional talent, which raises Rand’s suspicions about Taim’s loyalty. In Tear, Mat continues to face his destiny, caught between the desire to flee and the certainty that his luck is leading him to war. Tension in the Caemlyn court rises, with nobles conspiring in the shadows. Rand realizes he cannot fully trust anyone and that the only response to betrayal is force. If they challenge him, he will answer with steel and power.
Chapter 22 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Upon the White Sand
Egwene dreams of a divided White Tower, her future tied to decisions she does not yet fully understand. In Salidar, the rebel Aes Sedai continue debating their next move, while Sheriam struggles to maintain control. At the same time, Rand feels the web of intrigue tightening around him, with envoys and spies moving in the darkness. Meanwhile, across the world's battlefield, the pieces move, each with its own purpose. Egwene senses that her moment is approaching, though she cannot yet see clearly the path ahead. The storm is gathering, and each must choose their place before chaos consumes them.
Chapter 23 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Interpreting a Message
Graendal appears in the opulent chamber of Sammael, intrigued by the artifacts and relics he has gathered. Despite her attempt to conceal her envy, Sammael senses her interest. He boasts of his recent discovery of angreal and his access to an ancient sealed chamber, suggesting he possesses more than he reveals. He then makes a shocking revelation: he claims to have secured a truce with Rand al’Thor. Graendal is skeptical, convinced that the Dragon Reborn would never strike a deal with one of the Forsaken. Sammael remains confident, arguing that Rand understands war and will not attack him. With cunning, he pressures Graendal into providing information about other Forsaken, forcing her to reveal Mesaana’s location in the White Tower. Once alone, Sammael drops his mask of calm and reflects on his true ambition: to be the only Chosen on the Day of Return and to face Rand for the Great Lord’s favor.

Egwene walks through the bustling streets of Cairhien, enjoying the freedom of mingling with the people and listening to rumors. Among the circulating news, one stands out: the arrival of a delegation of Aes Sedai from the White Tower. She knows they have come for Rand, likely intending to subjugate him. Noticing a Red sister among them, she realizes the threat is real. She decides to alert the Wise Ones and rushes back to the Aiel camp. There, she informs Amys, Bair, and Sorilea, who share her concern. Sorilea insists that Egwene remain hidden to avoid being captured. Shortly after, Berelain departs for the Sun Palace to receive the Aes Sedai, promising to act cautiously. Egwene feels increasingly trapped between Aes Sedai intrigues, the danger looming over Rand, and her own position among the Wise Ones.

Although she hears vague rumors, she obtains no clear information. Suddenly, as she attempts to flee, she collides with Gawyn Trakand. The encounter is unexpected, and both are taken aback. Gawyn, still convinced that Rand killed Morgase, swears loyalty to Egwene and promises to protect her secret. In return, she assures him that Elayne is safe but does not reveal her whereabouts. In the privacy of an inn, Egwene confesses her love for him and asks him not to act against Rand until she can prove his innocence. Gawyn agrees, though doubt lingers in his heart. As Egwene returns to the Aiel camp, the Aes Sedai of the Tower weave plans in the shadows, preparing their offensive against the Dragon Reborn.

Rand observes an impressive display of Saldaean cavalry performing maneuvers on the plains while Alanna, in a foul mood, remains lost in thought. Accompanied by the Aiel, Rand rides toward Caemlyn when Deira Bashere, imposing and defiant, confronts him with her cold demeanor. As he returns to the city, a crowd cheers for him, though some call him the King of Andor, which deeply unsettles him. A sudden attack catches him off guard: a crossbowman fires at him from a rooftop, but Rand deflects the projectile with Saidin and kills the assailant with a fireball. However, Desora, a Maiden, steps in the way and takes the fatal hit. Rand orders the execution of the captured conspirators, leaving one survivor with a message for Pedron Niall. Back at the palace, he receives the noblewoman Elenia, who reveals details about Andor’s history and confirms that Tigraine and Morgase are not related, easing a troubling concern for Rand.
Chapter 27 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Gifts
After a secret meeting with Gawyn in Cairhien, Egwene returns to the Aiel camp, worried about the Aes Sedai from the Tower. Upon learning that Rand has returned, she decides to warn him of the danger they pose. At the palace, Rand receives her with a defiant attitude and hides her behind a Saidin weave, making her invisible just before the delegation from the White Tower arrives. Coiren, Galina, and Nesune try to persuade Rand to travel with them to Tar Valon, offering a chest full of gold and promises of support. Rand, maintaining a controlled yet defiant demeanor, imposes restrictions on their proximity and postpones his answer, subtly hinting that he understands their true intentions better than they believe. Egwene, horrified by his audacity, suspects that Rand is losing his sanity. As the Aes Sedai withdraw, Nesune senses that another channeler had been present, increasing her unease.
Chapter 28 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Letters
Rand tries to distract himself from Lews Therin’s growing presence in his mind, bombarding Berelain, Rhuarc, and his advisors with questions. His foul mood leads him to shout at Meilan, Maringil, and Colavaere, leaving them trembling. At night, tormented by dreams of escape, he wakes up determined to face his destiny without further evasion. At dawn, he receives a letter from the Sea Folk and another from Queen Alliandre of Ghealdan, cautiously offering her support. While reflecting on his increasing paranoia, a Gray Man attempts to assassinate him in his chambers, but Taim kills the intruder with a firebolt before Rand can interrogate him. Rand distrusts Taim, and Lews Therin’s presence in his mind grows more threatening. Meanwhile, Padan Fain, increasingly unhinged, senses Rand’s presence and plots to cause him pain, furious that someone else tried to kill him first.
Chapter 29 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Fire and Energy
Nynaeve struggles with her pride and frustration in Salidar, fearing that her inability to channel freely will make her useless to the Aes Sedai. After a tense encounter with Brendas, she meets with Thom and Juilin, recently arrived from Amadicia. They inform her that the Whitecloaks are gathering in the Fortress of the Light and that there are rumors of Morgase planning to return to Andor with an army. Elayne, though saddened, refuses to believe it possible. Later, Nynaeve and Elayne visit Logain, where Nynaeve, distracted, experiments with her power. Without realizing it, she touches the part of Logain that was destroyed when he was gentled—and suddenly, she restores it. In shock, she orders Elayne to fetch Sheriam, realizing that she has just achieved what was thought impossible: healing a gentled man.

Logain does not attempt to escape, but his gaze unsettles her. Soon, Sheriam and a group of Aes Sedai burst into the room, discovering that Nynaeve has accomplished the impossible—she has healed a gentled man. Despite her feat, the Yellows surround her with disbelief and lead her to questioning. To prove her discovery, she is ordered to attempt the same healing on Siuan and Leane. Furious, Nynaeve repeats the weave, restoring their ability to channel, though weakened. The Aes Sedai are left in shock, but instead of praising her, they begin analyzing her method. Nynaeve, exhausted, realizes that her discovery has made her the subject of intense scrutiny among all the Yellows.
Chapter 31 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Red Wax
Pedron Niall receives unsettling reports while Almon Valda returns to Amador, displeased with his leader’s inaction. Meanwhile, Morgase plans her escape with the help of a merchant named Barshaw. However, her plan collapses when she is taken to witness the execution of Paitir and his uncle, forcing her to accept a treaty with Niall to prevent further deaths. Although she signs the document, Niall unexpectedly delays mobilizing his troops, giving her more time to plan her next move. Elsewhere, the High Inquisitor, Asunawa, conspires against Niall, convinced that his weakness threatens the Children of the Light. Secretly, he plots Morgase’s trial and execution, certain that her resistance will provide the perfect excuse to eliminate her. Meanwhile, the queen hides her desperation and feigns submission, hoping to find another opportunity to escape.
Chapter 32 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Summoned with Urgency
Egwene feels the tension in Cairhien after Rand’s departure. The nobles distrust one another, the Wise Ones are irritated, and the Shaido, led by Sevanna, seem to be spying on the camp. Sevanna enjoys taunting Egwene, humiliating her with menial tasks. When some Maidens attempt to infiltrate Arilyn’s mansion, they are caught and returned badly beaten, worsening the hostility. Egwene avoids the oppressive atmosphere, finding solace in her meetings with Gawyn. To occupy her time, she decides to visit the Atha’an Miere and learn about weather control, but she is thrown into the river as a warning. Frustrated, she continues waiting for the Wise Ones’ permission to return to Tel’aran’rhiod. Finally, when she is allowed to enter, she receives an unexpected summons from Salidar. The Aes Sedai solemnly call for her, and Egwene faces uncertainty about her destiny.
Chapter 33 Summary – Lord of Chaos – Courage to Strengthen
Egwene prepares to leave, leaving a message for Gawyn. Before departing, she confesses her lies to Amys, Bair, and Sorilea: she has disobeyed their rules, and most importantly, she is not an Aes Sedai but merely an Accepted. She knows this carries a toh, and following Aiel tradition, she asks to fulfill her punishment. She is whipped by all the Wise Ones and apprentices she deceived, enduring the pain with determination. When it is over, she is accepted again and bid farewell with affection. Meanwhile, Rand assigns Mat a new mission: to travel to Salidar with the Band and escort Elayne to Caemlyn. Rand reveals that there are many Aes Sedai in the village and warns Mat to be cautious. With Aviendha as company, Mat reluctantly accepts, aware of the dangers. That night, Egwene, still sore, bids farewell to the Wise Ones and prepares for a journey that will change her fate.

As she emerges into the real world, the pain of her punishment returns with intensity, reminding her of her toh. Arriving in the village, she presents herself to Sheriam and the other Aes Sedai, surprising them all with the speed of her arrival. She discovers that Siuan Sanche, now rejuvenated by Nynaeve’s Healing, is there. Despite her doubts, she undergoes the ritual in which the Sitters confirm that they are all women, and Egwene pledges to serve the Tower. After a tense vote, all agree to her appointment. They make her repeat the protocol multiple times to avoid mistakes. Still in disbelief, Egwene follows the procedure as they drape her in the Amyrlin stole. Romanda and Lelaine, the leaders of the Sitters, are displeased with her bold decision. In private, Egwene confesses to her friends that she must act cautiously, as the Aes Sedai see her as a puppet. Conclusion – Lord of Chaos
And so Lord of Chaos ends—not with a roar, but with the cracking of shattered certainties. Rand al’Thor has woven a web of power, mistrust, and fire, where every ally may be a threat and every victory another fracture in his soul. The Wheel keeps turning—but now it spins on blades.
As the Asha’man rise as a hidden weapon and the Aes Sedai maneuver like ghosts, the line between command and collapse grows invisible. In this sixth volume, Robert Jordan doesn’t just escalate the conflict—he warns us: the greatest danger may not be the enemy outside, but the chaos we permit within.
But chaos doesn’t end here. Another vortex looms, another threat growing between whispers and cracking seals. You can follow this story in the next entry of the saga: A Crown of Swords – Book Summary by Chapter ➤
FAQs – Chapter by Chapter Summary – Lord of Chaos
What does “Let the Lord of Chaos rule” really mean in Lord of Chaos?
More than a sinister catchphrase, “Let the Lord of Chaos rule” is a direct command from the Dark One to his followers. It sets off a strategy where disorder, betrayal, and instability become deliberate tools of warfare. In the context of the book, it signals a shift where chaos is no longer just a consequence—it becomes a weapon wielded to weaken the world before the Last Battle. It’s a theme that drives the actions of the Forsaken and the spiral of political and magical conflict.
Why is the forced Warder bond between Alanna and Rand so important?
When Alanna bonds Rand without consent, it triggers a key theme of control masked as protection. This violation highlights the Aes Sedai’s tendency to manipulate “for the greater good” and exposes the lack of boundaries they respect with Rand. His furious response deepens the mistrust between him and the White Tower, reinforcing his alienation and his resolve to act independently. It’s a turning point in his journey from leader to hardened force.
What is the significance of Nynaeve healing Logain in Lord of Chaos?
Nynaeve’s healing of Logain—previously gentled and thought permanently powerless—shatters a core belief of the Aes Sedai. Her discovery isn’t just a medical miracle; it redefines power structures between male and female channelers. Politically, it threatens the Tower’s monopoly, and narratively, it elevates Nynaeve as a revolutionary figure. Her act sends ripples through the entire series, proving that what’s “impossible” in this world often isn’t.
How does the creation of the Black Tower change the balance of power?
By training male channelers under Mazrim Taim, Rand creates the Black Tower—a rival to the White Tower and a revolutionary force in the magic world. The Asha’man represent not just soldiers, but a challenge to centuries of female dominance in the One Power. The institution signals a major shift in the world order, preparing for the Last Battle on equal footing. It’s a move that reshapes alliances, fears, and the future of channeling itself.
Why does Rand order the execution of Mangin, even though he respects him?
Mangin, an honorable Aiel, is executed for killing a man without justification. Rand’s decision, though painful, shows his commitment to impartial justice—even among allies. It emphasizes his role not just as a military leader, but as a ruler who upholds law above sentiment. This act reveals the emotional weight of power and the sacrifices required to unite diverse cultures under one cause. It’s a moment that defines Rand’s evolving identity as king.
