Introduction – Obsidian

Some beginnings don’t feel like beginnings. Sometimes they arrive hidden in cardboard boxes, quiet towns, or the sarcastic smirk of someone who never wanted to be found. In Obsidian, the first official book of the Lux Series, Jennifer L. Armentrout sets in motion a story where light and darkness aren't metaphors—they’re weapons, and falling in love could be the deadliest mistake.

This chapter-by-chapter book summary follows Katy, a teenage blogger whose life is turned upside down by her neighbor Daemon Black, a boy who is both maddening and magnetic. What starts as friction soon unravels into secrets, sparks, and survival.

But Obsidian is not the first chronologically. If you're just starting the journey, be sure to explore the complete reading order of the Lux Series ➤

Chapter 1 Summary – Obsidian – The Arrival in Ketterman and the First Encounter with Daemon

Kat watches the boxes in her new dorm room in West Virginia and feels frustrated about not having Internet or updating her blog. Moving from Florida brings back the absence of her father and her mother’s change after the loss. The house feels unsettling and the town, isolated, reinforces her sense of rootlessness. While her mother cooks and talks about work, Kat agrees to go buy supplies and hears about some neighbors her age. Determined to try, she crosses the yard and knocks on the next door to ask for directions. Daemon Black opens, provocative and mocking, whose presence both confuses and enrages her in equal measure. The exchange turns tense and humiliating, with disparaging remarks and an uncomfortable attraction. Finally he points the way to Petersburg and a store. Kat leaves hurt but resolved not to hide, convinced she will make an effort to fit in and move forward.

Chapter 2 Summary – Obsidian – Foodland, Dee, and the First Alliances

In Petersburg, Kat calms down while shopping at Foodland, marked by posters of a missing girl. There she meets Dee, Daemon’s twin sister, cheerful and welcoming, who apologizes for his behavior. They talk easily and agree to meet to fix up the yard. An incident with a town mother reveals fearful looks toward Dee, sowing unease. After paying, they return and set a time at Kat’s house. Later, they chat on the porch about Florida, adapting to the place, and the absence of their parents. Dee confesses she feels lonely and yearns for excitement, while a storm approaches that postpones the gardening. The farewell leaves a promise for the next day and a growing bond. Kat tells her mother about the encounter and senses her relief. Although doubts persist about Daemon and the strange town atmosphere, Kat begins to feel she could find companionship and a possible beginning.

Chapter 3 Summary – Obsidian – The Shared Garden and Daemon’s Warning

With Internet installed, Kat returns to her blog and regains normalcy. Dee arrives and together they buy materials for the garden, carrying heavy bags back to the house. Upon exiting, they discover someone left the fertilizer by the porch, a gesture attributed to Daemon. They work pulling weeds and share confidences. Kat talks about her father’s death from cancer and the reason for the move. A disturbing moment occurs when Dee’s arm seems to turn transparent, though everything returns to normal. Daemon’s arrival tenses the atmosphere: he provokes, disdains the gardening and refuses to let Kat get close to his sister. Dee begs, he shows possessiveness and threatens Kat with an intimidating warning before leaving. The episode leaves Dee affected and Kat shaken, determined not to give in or abandon the friendship despite the latent danger she perceives in the neighborhood and her immediate surroundings.

Chapter 4 Summary – Obsidian – A Washed Car and a Forced Deal

Kat washes the car on a clear day, thinking about school and Dee, when Daemon appears to help. His manner is ironic but less hostile, and he cleans the vehicle efficiently. He confesses he must apologize to get the keys Dee hid and proposes to make up for it. The conversation swings between teasing and tension, with an uncomfortable closeness. Daemon reveals an imposed plan: to take Kat swimming and behave well to earn points. Kat refuses firmly, and he insists stubbornly. The struggle intensifies until Kat’s mother intervenes, interprets the situation pleasantly and approves the outing. Daemon takes the opportunity and seals the agreement in front of her. When he leaves, the rivalry persists, mixed with attraction and challenge, making clear that neither plans to give in and that the conflict has just begun between the new neighbors and the future expectations of both main characters from this point forward.

Chapter 5 Summary – Obsidian – The Hidden Lake and the Red Bikini Challenge

Katy spends the morning reading to avoid thinking about her forced date with Daemon. As she gets ready, she hesitates between a modest swimsuit and a bold red bikini, and chooses the latter so she won’t feel intimidated. After a brief conversation with her mother, Daemon arrives earlier than expected and leads her on foot to a hidden lake in the woods. The place is beautiful and peaceful, with clear water and smooth rocks surrounded by vegetation. Daemon swims with unsettling ease and stays under the water too long, which awakens Katy’s fear. When he reappears, she senses that something doesn’t fit in his version of events. Despite the tension, Katy enters the lake determined not to back down. Between provocations, silences, and intense looks, attraction mixes with mistrust. Daemon’s sudden disappearance under the water leaves Katy terrified, convinced that something serious has really happened there.

Chapter 6 Summary – Obsidian – The Impossible Return and the Unexplained Storm

Katy panics believing Daemon has drowned, but he emerges unscathed and downplays what happened. She is convinced he went too long without breathing and perceives that he is lying. After an argument, she slips on the rocks and Daemon catches her with superhuman speed, leaving both very close in a moment charged with tension. They return in silence to the neighborhood, where a luxurious car and the appearance of Matthew break the calm. The man shows hostility toward Katy and argues with Daemon about his relationship with Dee. The tension provokes a strange phenomenon: the sky darkens, thunder crashes and a storm arises out of nowhere. After a silent confrontation, Matthew leaves and the sky instantly clears. Katy is left shaken, recalling the lake and Daemon’s ability under water, convinced that neither of them is normal and that they hide something dangerous.

Chapter 7 Summary – Obsidian – Confessions, Secret Trails, and the Legend of Snowbird

Katy lies to Dee about her outing with Daemon to avoid further encounters. Days later, Daemon appears at night and talks with her about her blog and her readings, showing an unexpected side. He invites her to walk along little‑traveled paths behind the house, heading toward Seneca Rocks. During the hike, Daemon explains the history of the Seneca tribe and the legend of Snowbird, a princess who saved the warrior she loved during a dangerous climb. The conversation reveals a reflective and deep facet in him, while Katy questions her ideas about beauty and courage. Suddenly, Daemon senses danger and asks her to stay calm. A black bear appears at close range, imposing and silent. Katy is paralyzed by fear as the animal approaches. Daemon tries to drive it away and when the bear charges, a blinding light and intense heat explode between them, followed by total darkness that engulfs Katy completely.

Chapter 8 Summary – Obsidian – The Storm, the Porch, and the Interrupted Kiss

Katy wakes disoriented after fainting in the woods and discovers that Daemon has brought her to his porch while an electrical storm batters the place. Soaked by the rain, they remain sitting very close on the swing, wrapped in growing tension marked by physical contact and an attraction neither wants to admit. Daemon explains that the bear fled because of the storm, although Katy perceives inconsistencies and distrusts him again. The atmosphere becomes intimate, isolated from the world, with lightning illuminating the sky while they both fight against an obvious impulse. Daemon moves closer, hesitating, and Katy feels the moment becoming inevitable, until Dee appears and breaks the spell. The interruption leaves confusion, embarrassment and frustration. Later, Katy talks with Dee, tries to rationalize what happened and reflects alone on her attraction to Daemon, unable to deny that she desired that kiss that never came to happen.

Chapter 9 Summary – Obsidian – The Attack at the Library and the Impossible Light

Katy decides to go to the library alone despite Dee’s warnings and briefly enjoys the calm among the books before a storm darkens the town. As she leaves, an apparently harmless man asks for help with his car, and Katy agrees out of compassion. The encounter turns into a brutal assault when the stranger reveals inhuman hostility, attacks her violently, and demands to know where others are, mentioning a trail she does not understand. Katy is beaten, dragged, and choked, convinced she is going to die. At the last moment, a superhuman force intervenes, accompanied by an explosion of light that knocks out the streetlights. Daemon appears, frees her, and stays by her side as she catches her breath. Katy feels healing warmth in his touch, notices injuries that stop hurting, and is left shaken by what happened, certain that none of it can be explained in a normal way.

Chapter 10 Summary – Obsidian – The Hospital, Suspicions, and the Impossible Healing

Katy wakes up in the hospital surrounded by her mother, the police, Dee, and an anxious Daemon who does not leave her side. Doctors confirm she has no broken bones, only a sprain, bruises, and scratches, something that does not match the violence of the attack. The police attribute the assault to a disturbed man, though Katy remembers he was not after money and spoke about others. A new deadly attack in town increases the unease. Dee insists on taking her home and Daemon accompanies them, caring for her with unexpected attentiveness during the ride and the night. When she wakes up in the living room, Katy notices that her injuries have healed abnormally, almost completely. She remembers the heat emanating from Daemon and the ambiguous conversations between the twins. In front of the mirror, she confirms that her recovery is impossible by logic, and realizes that Daemon and Dee are hiding something serious that is beginning to involve her directly.

Chapter 11 Summary – Obsidian – The Restaurant, the Secrets, and the Public Humiliation

Katy spends the morning with Dee buying school supplies and they end up eating at the Smoke Hole Diner, a regular spot for the twins. The calm is broken when Daemon arrives and his presence reignites the tension between them, marked by irony, charged looks, and an unresolved conflict. The situation worsens with the arrival of Ash, who shows open hostility toward Katy and makes it clear she despises her without disguise. Ash indirectly accuses Katy of provoking a loss of control that involves both families, while Dee tries unsuccessfully to mediate. Katy feels attacked, confused, and hurt when she realizes Daemon does not defend her. After Daemon and Ash leave, Dee explains part of their previous relationship and mentions complex family ties. Katy begins to notice strange looks from other customers and a collective tension that is hard to ignore. The sense of isolation grows and makes it clear that her presence has disrupted an invisible balance within the town.

Chapter 12 Summary – Obsidian – The High School, the Lost Brother, and the Flying Tray

On her first day of high school, Katy becomes the center of attention because of her bandaged arm and the rumors circulating after the attack. She discovers that Daemon had a twin brother named Dawson, who disappeared along with a girl from the school, leaving her stunned. In Biology class, she recognizes Mr. Garrison as Matthew, the man connected to Daemon, and his constant stare increases her unease. In the cafeteria, Katy tries to sit with Dee, but Ash humiliates her again in front of everyone while provocatively sitting on Daemon’s lap. The hostility culminates when Daemon states that they do not want her there, causing unbearable public humiliation. Unable to endure any more looks of pity and contempt, Katy reacts impulsively and dumps her food tray over Ash and Daemon. The gesture causes general shock, suppressed laughter, and the intervention of Mr. Garrison, who expels her from the cafeteria. Katy leaves determined never to be anyone’s silent victim again.

Chapter 13 Summary – Obsidian – Rumors, Revelations, and a Conversation Pending

After the cafeteria incident, Katy gains notoriety at school and expects retaliation that never comes. Dee apologizes and strengthens their friendship, while Katy reflects on the strange events since her arrival in town. At home, she receives new books and takes refuge in her blog, though her curiosity leads her to research local stories about lights and creatures. Dee visits her and clarifies that Ash is not Daemon’s girlfriend, though their relationship is confusing, and they solidify their friendship while talking about Dawson and his disappearance. Katy senses Dee’s deep pain and decides not to push her. The next day, Lesa and Carissa support her and invite her to sit with them, easing her sense of loneliness. In class, Daemon provokes her about the ruined shirt and confronts her with a different tone, hinting that she is not what he expected. The tension leads to a forced date to talk that night. Katy accepts, aware that she needs answers, even if she does not want to admit it.

Chapter 14 Summary – Obsidian – The Walk That Breaks All the Rules

Katy agrees to talk with Daemon and they go for a nighttime walk through the woods, where the tension between them mixes with an uncomfortable attraction. Daemon apologizes for his behavior in the cafeteria and clarifies that Ash is not his girlfriend, though he avoids going deeper into his reasons. Katy takes the opportunity to question his family’s secrets, Dawson’s disappearance, and the strange looks from the town, which makes Daemon defensive. Near the lake, he asks her to distance herself from Dee and limit their friendship, assuring her that her closeness will only bring trouble. Katy interprets his words as an unjust threat and feels hurt by his coldness. Unable to endure the situation, she runs away furious and determined to leave the town, unaware that she is blindly running toward the road and imminent danger.

Chapter 15 Summary – Obsidian – When Time Stands Still

Katy freezes in the middle of the road when a truck speeds toward her, but the impact never happens because time impossibly stops. Daemon appears and uses a supernatural power to halt the vehicle, revealing his true nature as he transforms into a being of brilliant light. Terrified by what she has seen, Katy runs, convinced that Daemon is not human, but he catches up to her and stops her without hurting her. After calming her, Daemon admits that his attempts to keep her at a distance have failed and that her presence has complicated everything. He acknowledges that he can no longer hide the truth from her and agrees to explain himself. Katy understands that what happened has no rational explanation and demands answers, aware that what she is about to discover will forever change the way she sees Daemon and the world around her.

Chapter 16 Summary – Obsidian – The Truth About the Luxen

Daemon reveals that he and his kind are Luxen, beings of light from a planet called Lux that was destroyed, forcing them to arrive on Earth as meteorites. He explains that they can take on human appearance, manipulate light, heal wounds, move objects, and travel at impossible speeds, though they must hide their powers to survive among humans. Katy learns that the Thompsons are also Luxen and that a branch of the government knows of their existence, though it considers them harmless. Daemon confesses that using his abilities near humans leaves a detectable trace and that by saving her he has marked Katy, turning her into a potential target. Although he assures her that he trusts her and does not intend to hurt her, he warns that there are enemies capable of using her to get to him. Katy understands that her life will never be normal again.

Chapter 17 Summary – Obsidian – The Morning Dee Reveals the Luxen Truth

Katy wakes up at Dee’s house disoriented, in physical pain, with a complete memory of the previous night. She discovers she slept in one of Daemon’s shirts and accepts that her best friend is an alien without feeling fear, only curiosity. Dee confirms her Luxen nature and shows abilities such as speed, heat control, physical transformation, and changing appearance, even copying Katy’s look. She explains that Luxen perceive human energy, that Katy emits a visible trace, and that Daemon is one of the most powerful among them. Dee reveals the existence of the Arum, enemies born of darkness who destroyed their planet and seek to steal Luxen energy. She also explains that the human government monitors the Luxen and that Katy would be in danger if Defense discovered she knows the truth. Dee asks for absolute silence and confirms that while the trace exists, Katy must stay close to Daemon to survive.

Chapter 18 Summary – Obsidian – The Normal Day That Stops Being Normal

Katy tries to have a normal day with her mother, carrying the weight of the Luxen secret and the guilt of hiding it. They talk about Daemon, Dee, and a possible date for her mother with Dr. Michaels, providing a brief emotional respite. After being left alone, Katy reflects on the impossibility of her new reality and Daemon’s constant surveillance. He appears to invite her to the lake and check on her emotional state, worried about the risk that she might lose control or reveal the truth. During the walk, Daemon answers questions about the Luxen, time manipulation, Bethany’s disappearance, and Dawson’s death, though he avoids key details. At the lake, he demonstrates his powers and they share a moment of physical intimacy that intensifies attraction and confusion. Daemon explains how the use of powers leaves a trace in humans and admits he killed the Arum who attacked Katy to protect his family.

Chapter 19 Summary – Obsidian – Dawson, Bethany, and the Weight of Loss

Daemon reveals to Katy the full story of Dawson and Bethany, marked by a forbidden love between Luxen and human. He explains the constant surveillance by the Department of Defense, the restrictions imposed on his species, and the impossibility of a free life. He recounts how Dawson and Bethany disappeared after using Luxen energy, leaving a trace that attracted an Arum, and confirms that both died. Katy shares the pain of her father’s death, and they find mutual comfort in shared loss. The emotional closeness strengthens their bond, though Daemon insists that Katy remains a risk while she carries the trace. After returning to everyday life, Daemon continues to watch over her, imposing his presence even at school and at home. A domestic argument with Dee reveals the constant tension they live under. Alone together, Daemon and Katy share an evening charged with provocation, restrained attraction, and intense silences, aware that nothing between them can be simple.

Chapter 20 Summary – Obsidian – Visible Jealousy and the Threat of the Arum

Katy goes through the school day under strange looks from teachers and students, aware that her trace is still evident to the Luxen. In the cafeteria, a friendly encounter with Simon is interrupted by Daemon, whose possessive attitude becomes obvious and creates discomfort. Dee decides to sit with Katy and her friends, disrupting a social balance that draws attention and hostile stares, especially from Ash. Amid jokes and comments, Dee hints at a closeness between Katy and Daemon that both deny, though their looks betray the truth. The conversation shifts to Sarah’s death, whose cause cannot be explained in human terms. Later, Katy confronts Dee and receives a disturbing confirmation: an Arum was responsible, and Daemon eliminated it. Dee explains that Arum kill humans without reason and seek Luxen energy. The revelation leaves Katy with real fear, aware that the danger remains close and does not spare the innocent.

Chapter 21 Summary – Obsidian – Apparent Normalcy, Healed Wounds, and a Dangerous Invitation

As weeks pass, Katy’s trace fades and Daemon resumes provoking her in class, restarting a tense dynamic they both recognize. Everyday life moves on with outings, studying, and dance plans, while Dee reflects on her right to love without fear. An incident in class reveals Daemon’s jealousy when Simon invites Katy to study and her backpack goes flying, causing humiliation. Daemon admits his action and shows concern, though disguised. After accepting Simon’s invitation to the dance, Katy has an accident with a car door and Daemon heals her instantly, leaving a faint trace. He warns of risks, but Katy rejects his surveillance. Later, the friends shop for dresses in Cumberland and an unsettling presence watches from outside the store, awakening fear. Dee reveals a final detail that unsettles Katy: the chosen dress is red, Daemon’s favorite color.

Chapter 22 Summary – Obsidian – The Fall Dance and a Defiant Decision

The night of the dance begins with nerves and expectations as Dee carefully gets Katy ready and her mother watches with emotion. Simon arrives, shows excessive physical interest, and drinks before entering, which unsettles Katy. In the gym decorated with autumn motifs, Simon becomes invasive and shows off to his friends, increasing her discomfort. Katy seeks refuge with Lesa, Carissa, and Dee, who confesses sadness at not being able to choose freely. When she reconnects with Daemon, the attraction intensifies during a slow dance marked by care and closeness, in contrast to Simon’s behavior. Daemon tries to convince Katy to leave for safety and to control the situation, but she refuses to be directed. When Simon suggests going to an after-party, Katy accepts out of defiance, aware of Mr. Garrison’s watchful gaze and of the tension between her own will and real danger. The night hangs suspended in a risky decision.

Chapter 23 Summary – Obsidian – The Attack in the Cornfields and Daemon’s Intervention

Katy arrives with Simon at a party in harvested cornfields lit by a bonfire, surrounded by alcohol, music, and chaos. Although she tries to stay sober and find Dee and her friends, Simon insists on drinking and gradually pulls her away from the group into the woods. When she loses her mother’s shawl, Katy is left isolated and vulnerable. Simon begins to invade her space, pins her against a tree, and kisses her without consent, ignoring her refusals and provoking fear and revulsion. The situation becomes dangerous when he tries to force her. Daemon appears violently, immobilizes Simon with his powers, and leaves him completely paralyzed. Katy regains control and releases her anger before Daemon frees him, threatens him, and drives him away. He then returns with the shawl, covers Katy with his jacket, and decides to take her home, aware that her trace is visible again.

Chapter 24 Summary – Obsidian – The Battle Against the Arum and the Power of Obsidian

Daemon stops on the road when he encounters three Arum blocking the way and hands Katy an obsidian dagger, explaining that it is the only weapon capable of killing them. He orders her to run when the moment comes, but she stays close. The Arum taunt and attack as Daemon unleashes his full power, uprooting trees, shattering asphalt, and isolating the area. His body becomes a source of blinding light as he fights, destroying one of them. The effort weakens him and the remaining two Arum surround him, immobilize him, and begin to drain his energy. Disobeying, Katy runs into the fight and drives the obsidian into Sarefeth, causing his destruction. Baruck flees at the sight of the weapon. Katy reaches Daemon, fearing she has lost him, until he regains his human form. He clears the road and they escape, knowing that one Arum is still loose and the danger is not over.

Chapter 25 Summary – Obsidian – Consequences, Revelations, and a Bond That Changes

Katy wakes with the sun and discovers she is sleeping wrapped in Daemon’s arms, their bodies intertwined and a closeness that stirs confusing emotions. He pulls away abruptly upon waking and avoids any explanation. Later, at the Black house, the Luxen debate the attack and Katy’s presence, whose glowing trace poses a risk. Daemon admits that she saved his life with the obsidian and defends her against Andrew and Ash, while Mr. Garrison decides not to turn her over to the Department of Defense. The need arises to eliminate her trace to buy time against the remaining Arum. Katy feels sidelined and takes refuge in the kitchen, where Ash confronts her and warns that Daemon will die for protecting her. The tension reveals jealousy, fear, and unacknowledged attraction. Katy realizes that her relationship with Daemon has changed irreversibly and that from this moment on, they are bound by a constant threat they cannot ignore.

Chapter 26 Summary – Obsidian – Rain, Tension, and a Trace That Fades

Katy spends Sunday at home under her mother’s concern, exhausted after recent events and the tension with the Luxen. The rain prevents any plan to reduce her trace and deepens the feeling of confinement. Daemon appears barely wet, determined to find an immediate solution and protect her from the Arum Baruck. They talk about memories, losses, and beliefs, and the closeness softens the conflict. Daemon gives her an obsidian dagger to carry at all times, aware of the danger. Katy tries to take refuge in her blog and books, but Daemon discovers her video and reacts with unexpected honesty. The argument returns, charged with provocation, pride, and denied attraction. The tension escalates into an intense kiss that unleashes energy and causes electrical failures. The contact reduces Katy’s trace. Daemon stops in time, regains distance, and leaves, leaving emotional consequences and a changed bond.

Chapter 27 Summary – Obsidian – Suspicions, Confessions, and Baruck’s Shadow

Katy wakes angry at Daemon and at herself after what happened, dealing with a burned laptop and confused feelings. The trace has nearly disappeared, causing suspicion and new tensions among the Luxen. At school she avoids everyone and receives insistent messages from Simon, whom she decides not to forgive. Dee approaches her and expresses fear of losing their friendship; Katy reassures her that they are not monsters and they agree to meet on Halloween. While handing out candy with Lesa, Katy confesses the kiss with Daemon and admits an uncomfortable attraction that clashes with her pride. Later, at Dee’s house, they prepare movies and food while the boys search for Baruck. The waiting breeds unease and a call interrupts the night. Dee receives alarming news: Baruck has been located and is heading toward the area. The danger closes in again and demands rapid decisions now.

Chapter 28 Summary – Obsidian – Katy’s Sacrifice and Daemon’s Arrival

Katy proposes luring Baruck away from Dee’s house by strengthening her trace, convinced this will protect the Luxen. Dee reluctantly agrees and releases luminous energy that intensifies Katy’s glow. She flees by car toward the cornfields through rain and fear, while Daemon calls her, furious and worried, and runs after her. The plan works and Baruck appears, made of shadows, demanding to know where Daemon is. Katy refuses and fights with the obsidian, but the Arum overpowers her, breaks the weapon, and brutally injures her. He drags her, tortures her, and begins to drain her energy, pushing her to the brink. Pain paralyzes her as life slips away into shadow. When all seems lost, a force bursts in with radiant fury. Daemon arrives like a vengeful angel, bathed in light, ready to face the enemy and save her at the final moment.

Chapter 29 Summary – Obsidian – The Union of Light and Katy’s Power

Baruck mocks, convinced Katy is dead, but Daemon attacks with fury and clashes with him in a devastating battle of light against darkness. Dee arrives to help and is injured, left exposed to the Arum’s attack. Gravely wounded, Katy refuses to give up and acts to protect them, determined not to let them die because of her. When Baruck wounds Daemon as he shields her, Daemon uses what little energy he has left to heal Katy, transferring his light to her. Daemon’s and Dee’s energies connect through Katy and form an unexpected bond. That union awakens a new power in her, fueled by emotion, memory, and determination. Katy releases it all in a brutal surge that completely destroys Baruck. Exhausted and near death, Daemon saves her by giving her his own essence, creating a deep and irreversible connection between them.

Chapter 30 Summary – Obsidian – Consequences, Secrets, and an Impossible Connection to Ignore

After Baruck’s defeat, the Luxen attribute the victory to Daemon, while Katy keeps silent that she was the one who destroyed him. Though physically fine, she feels unsettled and different, as if something essential has changed within her. When Daemon returns, both sense an intense, constant connection that destabilizes them. He gives her an obsidian pendant to protect her and admits that her trace remains strong. During a confrontation charged with emotion, they discover their hearts beat in the same rhythm, confirming they are bound by more than attraction. Daemon acknowledges that healing her changed her and that they are now connected, though he tries to downplay it. Katy refuses to accept a relationship based on obligation, trace, or destiny and demands something genuine. Though Daemon admits he wants to be with her, Katy decides to walk away, making it clear she will settle for nothing less than real love.

FAQs – Chapter by Chapter Summary – Obsidian

What is the “trace” Daemon leaves on Katy in Obsidian and why is it so dangerous?

The trace is a glowing mark Luxen leave on humans when they use their powers on them. In Obsidian, Daemon repeatedly saves Katy, healing her with his light, which unintentionally marks her. This trace becomes a beacon for the Arum, their deadly enemies, and a liability for the Luxen community. Anyone who sees the trace can track it straight back to them. It forces Katy and Daemon to stay close, puts her life at risk, and changes their relationship dynamic—blurring the line between attraction and survival.

Why does Daemon keep pushing Katy away from Dee, even though he’s clearly drawn to her?

Daemon’s priority is to protect his sister and their people. He knows any closeness between a human and a Luxen puts them all in danger. When Katy is marked with the trace, she becomes a risk magnet—not just for the Arum, but also for government surveillance. His insistence is not just about jealousy or control; it’s rooted in trauma. He already lost his brother Dawson to a forbidden romance with a human. Daemon’s mixed signals reflect the conflict between what he feels and what he fears.

What role does obsidian play in the fight between the Luxen and the Arum?

Obsidian is the only weapon that can kill the Arum. In Obsidian, Daemon gives Katy a dagger made of it right before a critical battle. She ends up using it to stab an Arum and save Daemon’s life. This moment is pivotal—not only does it flip her from damsel to warrior, but it symbolizes her entry into the Luxen world on her own terms. Obsidian, a simple earthly stone, becomes a symbol of power, agency, and the collision between alien conflict and human courage.

How does Katy and Daemon’s connection evolve throughout the book?

Their relationship moves from friction to undeniable intimacy. As Daemon heals Katy after the final battle, he creates a bond neither of them fully understands. Their heartbeats sync. Their energy links. But while the connection is literal, Katy demands it be real. She doesn’t want a relationship born from obligation or cosmic interference. She wants choice, not destiny. Her decision to walk away at the end of the book is less about rejection and more about claiming emotional agency in a world where so little is under her control.

What’s the real central conflict in Obsidian beyond the romance?

Beyond the heat between Katy and Daemon, the novel dives deep into identity, secrecy, and survival. Katy is pulled into a world of cosmic rules and quiet wars without consent. Her blog, her books, her normal life—they’re all threatened by powers she didn’t ask to understand. The heart of Obsidian is the cost of truth: how much we’re willing to lose to know who we are and who we can become. The story challenges whether love can bloom under constant surveillance, and whether autonomy is even possible when you’re glowing in the dark.
