In The Shadow Rising, Robert Jordan deepens The Wheel of Time saga, forcing his characters to confront not only external threats, but the hidden truths pulsing beneath their own skin. Every step they take seems woven from ancient prophecy and bound by a fate none of them can escape.

Perrin, Mat, Egwene, Nynaeve, Elayne, and others face betrayal, death, and eerie thresholds that offer answers no one is ready to hear. The tone grows darker, but so does the clarity of purpose.

Chapter 1 Summary – The Shadow Rising – The Seed of Shadows

The wind blows across the plains of Caralain, passing over Dragonmount and reaching the majestic city of Tar Valon, home of the White Tower. There, Min, hiding her identity under a cloak, approaches the Tower with a secret mission. Aware of the power and danger represented by the Amyrlin Seat, she seeks an audience with Siuan Sanche. Min possesses an unusual ability: she sees visions of people's futures, and what she has witnessed in the Tower deeply unsettles her. Many Aes Sedai and Warders are fated to die on the same day, signaling an imminent catastrophe. While waiting, her encounter with Gawyn Trakand confirms that Egwene, Elayne, and Nynaeve have disappeared. Finally, Min is received by the Amyrlin, to whom she warns of the terrible visions, but Siuan has other plans: Min must remain in the Tower, assuming a disguise to spy on the Black Ajah.

Chapter 2 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Whirlwinds in the Pattern

The scorching wind from the Fingers of the Dragon delta reaches Tear, where the Stone, a symbol of power, is now under the control of the Dragon Reborn. In his chambers, Perrin faces Faile's nervousness until an axe comes to life and attacks, forcing him into a desperate fight. Meanwhile, Mat plays cards with Tairen nobles when his cards suddenly turn real and attack him, barely escaping with his life. Rand, tormented by dreams and doubts, receives an unexpected visit from Berelain, but the tension escalates when his own reflections emerge from the mirrors and attack him. He fights fiercely until he absorbs their energy, left wounded but holding Callandor, realizing that the Shadow is stalking him and that his enemies, both seen and unseen, will not stop pursuing him.

Chapter 3 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Reflections

Perrin and Faile walk through the halls of the Stone, noticing the tension among the servants and soldiers who avoid them. The presence of the Aiel and Rand's control over Tear generate distrust. As they reach the antechamber of Rand’s quarters, they find Torean and his armed guards on a floor they shouldn't be on. After an uncomfortable conversation, Perrin senses fear in Berelain, who hastily leaves Rand’s room. Upon entering, he finds Rand badly wounded, covered in blood, clutching Callandor in his hands, and the room in ruins. Rand insists he was attacked by a Forsaken. Moiraine arrives and heals him, confirming that dark forces are slipping through the Pattern. While the Aiel watch Rand with skepticism, he decides he will no longer run—he will face those who hunt him.

Chapter 4 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Comets in the Wind

In his small room, Thom Merrilin prepares a letter to sow discord among the High Lords when Mat arrives, agitated. He confesses that his playing cards tried to kill him, fueling his desire to leave Tear. However, every time he plans to go, something holds him back. Thom suggests it might be due to his loyalty to Rand, but Mat denies it. He also suspects Moiraine is watching him through the One Power. Despite his decision to leave at dawn, Mat allows himself to be distracted by a game of stones with Thom, who reflects on how the threads of fate seem to bind him to Tear. As they play, the old gleeman wonders if his destiny is as entwined with Rand’s as Mat’s is—and whether he can truly escape the influence of the Aes Sedai.

Chapter 5 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Interrogations

Egwene, Nynaeve, and Aviendha wait for Moiraine in the Stone of Tear while discussing the possibility of traveling to Tanchico. In a brightly lit hall decorated with Tear’s emblem, they interrogate two captured members of the Black Ajah: Joiya Byir and Amico Nagoyin. Amico, weakened and defeated, insists that something in Tanchico poses a great danger to Rand. Joiya, on the other hand, reveals a different plan: Liandrin intends to free Mazrim Taim and use him as a false Dragon to discredit Rand. Egwene distrusts Joiya, but both revelations are alarming. Moiraine bursts into the room, visibly irritated by Rand’s stubbornness. She orders the prisoners to be transferred to Tar Valon and leaves the decision of their next move in the hands of the young women. With uncertainty surrounding the threat in Tanchico and the possible conspiracy involving Taim, doubt lingers.

Chapter 6 Summary – The Shadow Rising – The Threshold

Moiraine, furious at Rand for his inaction, informs Egwene, Nynaeve, and Elayne that he must move or be killed. The young women discover that Rand has been studying the Prophecies of the Dragon and that Moiraine plans to guide him to Illian to confront Sammael. The Aes Sedai mentions a ter'angreal in the Stone: a red stone doorway that grants three answers about the future, but she warns of its dangers. Nynaeve and Egwene consider using it to uncover the truth about the Black Ajah, but Moiraine insists that questions related to the Shadow can have dire consequences. Meanwhile, Elayne confesses to Egwene her love for Rand and fears Berelain’s interest in him. Nynaeve warns her that loving Rand will be difficult, but Elayne is determined to pursue it. With the threat of the Black Ajah and the uncertainty surrounding Rand, the young women must make a decision before it is too late.

Chapter 7 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Playing with Fire

Egwene and Elayne visit Rand under the pretense of checking his wounds. The Aiel guards allow them inside, where they find the room in disarray. Rand appears more changed than Egwene remembers—his expression harder, his demeanor more distrustful. When the young women offer to help him control the Power, he hesitates but agrees. Egwene tries to sense saidin and feels the dark wound in his side. In response to their distrust, Rand unleashes a surge of Power, suspending them in the air and causing the room to shake. Elayne confronts him, managing to make him agree to continue trying to learn. Before leaving, Egwene tells him she cannot marry him. Rand, surprised, admits he feels the same. As she departs, Egwene leaves Elayne with him, hoping she can handle him with care. Deep inside, she knows they must find a solution for Rand’s dangerous power.

Chapter 8 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Intransigence

After Egwene leaves, Elayne and Rand are left alone. Nervous, she confesses her affection for him. Rand, awkward but sincere, admits he also cares for her. They share a passionate kiss, though he remains uncertain about his own feelings. Confident, Elayne reminds him that some women see men as ornaments, but she looks at him with her heart. Later, Rand confronts the High Lords of Tear, who try to justify their excessive taxes. With authority, he orders tax reductions and seeks trade agreements with Illian and Mayene, challenging Tear’s traditions. Meanwhile, Mat, troubled by gaps in his memory and his instinctive knowledge of the Old Tongue, seeks advice from Egwene. She tells him about a ter'angreal that answers questions but warns him of its dangers. Mat, uneasy, promises not to use it without permission. Though he remains his usual self, something within him has changed.

Chapter 9 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Decisions

The stifling heat settles over Tear, and Mat is avoided by the nobles after his strange encounter with the deadly playing cards. Perrin, worried about Faile, seeks out rumors to convince her to leave. Egwene and Nynaeve interrogate the Black Sisters without success, while Egwene grows closer to Aviendha, fascinated by Aiel customs. Rand, guided by Elayne’s advice, maneuvers among the nobles, ensuring their obedience with veiled threats. However, his control falters when he confronts Meilan and Sunamon, burning their documents and imposing his will with fury. Selene reappears, revealing her true identity as Lanfear and proclaiming her love for Rand. She offers him absolute power under the Dark One’s rule, but he rejects her, declaring his intent to fight. A Gray Man attempts to assassinate him, but Rand defeats him. Soon, chaos erupts in the Stone: Trollocs and Myrddraal have invaded the fortress.

Chapter 10 Summary – The Shadow Rising – The Citadel Resists

Rand finds his Aiel guards slaughtered and joins the Defenders in the fight against the Shadowspawn. Terror spreads, but his presence inspires courage. He faces a Myrddraal and, after a fierce battle, slays it, causing the Trollocs linked to it to die as well. As the battle rages, Rand moves through the Stone, witnessing Moiraine and Lan fighting the monsters. He confronts another Fade and, drawing in saidin through Callandor, annihilates it. Unleashing the Power, he calls down a devastating storm of lightning, obliterating the enemies. Seeing a dead child, he tries to revive her with the Power but fails. Devastated, he realizes that Callandor gives him the ability to do anything—except defy death. The next day, he will make a crucial decision.

Chapter 11 Summary – The Shadow Rising – What is Hidden

Egwene prepares to enter Tel'aran'rhiod without the stone ring, determined to master the World of Dreams on her own. In her room, accompanied by Elayne, Nynaeve, and Aviendha, she studies a map of Tanchico, searching for clues about the Black Ajah. After concentrating, she enters the World of Dreams and appears in the Panarch’s Palace, where she observes strange objects, including a ter’angreal that emits a painful glow. Later, she accidentally transports herself to the Aiel Waste, where a warrior surprises her. Egwene defends herself with the Power and manages to return to Tanchico. There, an older Aiel woman, Amys, finds her and warns her about a great darkness in the city. She offers to teach her about dreamwalking and tells her that she must travel to the Three-fold Land to learn how to control her abilities.

Chapter 12 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Tanchico or the Tower

Egwene wakes up in Tear after her journey into Tel'aran'rhiod. Elayne and Nynaeve were worried, as she took too long to respond. She tells them about Amys, the Wise One she met in the World of Dreams, who proposed that she travel to the Waste to train her. Aviendha recognizes Amys and confirms that she is a powerful dreamwalker. While they deliberate on their next destination, Moiraine arrives with news: Joiya and Amico have been murdered in their cells, confirming that their revelations were true. Nynaeve and Elayne decide to go to Tanchico to investigate the presence of the Black Ajah, while Egwene plans to head to the Waste with Aviendha. However, the Wise Ones have summoned the Aiel, forcing her to travel to Rhuidean instead of accompanying her friends. Finally, Moiraine mentions that Rand will announce his plans the next day, keeping everyone on edge about the future.

Chapter 13 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Rumors

In a tavern in the Maule, Mat sits alone, disturbed by memories of the attack on the Stone. His mind replays the confrontation with a Myrddraal and the unexpected intervention of the Trollocs, who, instead of attacking him, killed the Halfman. Haunted by what happened, he overhears a merchant mention the Two Rivers and joins the conversation. He learns that the Whitecloaks have entered his homeland, searching for the Dragon Reborn and a man with yellow eyes. Shaken by the news, he rushes to inform Perrin, who already knows and has decided to return. Mat, torn between the urgency to help his family and his desire to avoid being caught up in Rand’s fate, struggles against an invisible force holding him back. Finally, he flips a coin into the air, accepting that he cannot ignore his home.

Chapter 14 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Customs of Mayene

Perrin prepares to leave for the Two Rivers, aware that his fate compels him to protect his people. As he changes, Berelain bursts into his room. Determined to leave Tear after the night’s events, she suggests he should accompany her to Mayene, implying an interest beyond the professional. Before Perrin can react, Faile enters and witnesses the scene. Her composed demeanor shatters when Berelain insinuates her triumph over him. Furious, Faile confronts the First, threatening her with a knife. Berelain responds skillfully, throwing her to the ground. Rhuarc intervenes, reprimanding both for their childish behavior. Humiliated but determined, Faile vows that she will not let Berelain take Perrin from her. Her anger turns into resolve, certain that, even if he doesn’t see it yet, he belongs to her more than he realizes.

Chapter 15 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Through the Threshold

Desperate for answers about his fate, Mat steps through the ter’angreal in the Stone and enters a strange world where serpent-like creatures demand that he ask three questions. His first question about the Two Rivers receives a perplexing answer: he must go to Rhuidean. The atmosphere grows tense as a bell tolls, alarming the enigmatic beings. In his confusion, Mat demands more answers and receives cryptic prophecies about his destiny: he will marry the Daughter of the Nine Moons, die and be reborn, and must sacrifice half the light of the world to save it. Abruptly expelled, he finds himself back in the Stone’s chamber, where Rand and Moiraine also emerge from the ter’angreal with their own secrets. Though he does not fully understand what he has been told, Mat knows his life has changed irreversibly, and his fate awaits him in Rhuidean.

Chapter 16 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Farewells

Perrin wakes from nightmares in which Faile watches him in pain and the Whitecloaks hunt him. Sore and weary, he gets dressed, trying to shake off the memories of the previous night. As the Stone is cleaned after the Trolloc attack, Perrin visits Loial, who has been hailed as a hero for protecting women and children during the battle. Faile, present in the room, praises him, but her true purpose is to ensure that Loial takes her through the Ways along with Perrin. When the Ogier agrees due to an old promise, Perrin refuses to ask Faile to stay and decides to follow them in secret. Before they depart, Gaul, the Aiel, joins their journey, ready to fight alongside him against the Whitecloaks in the Two Rivers.

Chapter 17 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Impostures

Thom spreads rumors in the Stone to increase distrust between the commoners and nobles, but Moiraine confronts him in his room. She knows his past and convinces him to accompany Elayne and Nynaeve to Tanchico, offering him information about the Aes Sedai who gentled his nephew, Owyn. Meanwhile, Min maintains her disguise in the White Tower, but upon seeing a halo of glory around Logain, she decides to warn the Amyrlin. In the Tower, Siuan receives two urgent messages: Mazrim Taim has escaped, and Rand has taken the Stone of Tear with Callandor. The Amyrlin convenes the Hall of the Tower to formally declare support for the Dragon Reborn. Meanwhile, a sinister Aes Sedai cruelly interrogates a novice for information about Min, spreading fear throughout the Tower.

Chapter 18 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Through the Ways

Perrin prepares for his journey to the Two Rivers, fastening his axe to his waist despite his reluctance. Gaul reports that no other Aiel will join them, and although Perrin hides his disappointment, he resigns himself to continue without additional help. Together with Gaul, he avoids the main halls of the Stone and reaches the stables, where Faile, Loial, and two more Aiel, Bain and Chiad, await. Faile insists on traveling with him, ignoring his attempts to push her away. As they argue, a tremor shakes the fortress, a sign that Rand has used the Power. Taking advantage of the confusion, the group flees Tear at full speed. After an exhausting race, they arrive at the entrance to the Ways, an ancient and mystical gateway. Loial opens it with the Avendesora leaf, and the group steps into the eerie darkness of the strange world ahead.

Chapter 19 Summary – The Shadow Rising – The Wavedancer

Elayne and Nynaeve arrive at the port of Tear to board a Sea Folk brigantine, the Wavedancer. Captain Coine and her sister Jorin, a Windfinder, receive them cautiously, as the Sea Folk rarely transport Aes Sedai. While negotiating passage, they learn that the Sea Folk believe in a prophecy about the Coramoor, their name for the Dragon Reborn. When the women reveal they are pursuing the Black Ajah in Tanchico, Coine agrees to take them without payment, saying she does it for Rand. Before departure, they are unexpectedly joined by Juilin Sandar, sent by Rand to protect them, and Thom Merrilin, at Moiraine’s request. Nynaeve asserts her authority over them, ensuring they follow her orders. Just as the ship prepares to sail, Rand causes another tremor in Tear, hastening their departure toward Tanchico.

Chapter 20 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Storm Winds

As the Wavedancer sails deeper into the sea, Elayne and Nynaeve reflect on the mission awaiting them in Tanchico. During the voyage, Elayne observes Windfinder Jorin using the One Power to manipulate the winds and speed up the vessel. In a private conversation, Jorin admits that Sea Folk women can channel but avoid the White Tower to escape being forced into becoming Aes Sedai. Elayne promises not to expose them. Meanwhile, Thom and Sandar adapt to the journey, and Elayne tries to unravel a mystery about the gleeman who follows her. The ship moves swiftly, driven by Jorin’s winds, promising to reach Tanchico in ten days. With each mile traveled, the threat of the Black Ajah looms ever closer.

Chapter 21 Summary – The Shadow Rising – At the Heart of the Citadel

The Tairen nobility gathers in the great hall of the Stone, summoned by Rand. Moiraine and Egwene move through the anxious lords, while the Aes Sedai suspects that Rand is planning something significant. Rand arrives at the center, escorted by a hundred Aiel with their veils raised, instilling fear among the nobles. He announces a treaty with Mayene and the imminent march of Tear’s army. The nobles celebrate, believing they will attack Illian, but Rand surprises them by revealing that the campaign will head to Cairhien to restore order and feed the starving population. He also assigns food distribution oversight to Alteima, causing her to faint. Finally, he drives Callandor into the Stone’s floor, making it clear that he will return for it. Announcing his departure, he withdraws with the Aiel, while Moiraine and Egwene follow, concerned about his mental state and intentions.

Chapter 22 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Outside the Citadel

Rand and his retinue leave Tear, watched suspiciously by the townspeople. Egwene confronts him about Elayne, but Rand appears confused by her reproaches. Moiraine demands answers, and Rand finally reveals his plan: he will use a Portal Stone to travel to the Waste and reach Rhuidean. Mat, though terrified by the idea, decides to accompany him. After traversing the Tairen countryside, they find the stone pillar marked with ancient symbols. Rhuarc confirms it represents Rhuidean but remains reserved. Mat flips a coin to decide which symbol to activate, and Rand selects it with unsettling certainty. Using an angreal he found in the Great Holding, Rand channels the One Power, absorbing it in an overwhelming torrent. In an instant, the world disappears around them.

Chapter 23 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Beyond the Stone

Egwene, Rand, Mat, and the Aiel arrive at the arid slopes of Chaendaer after crossing a Portal Stone. The city of Rhuidean, shrouded in mist, appears before them. Rand, exhausted from channeling, can barely stand, and Moiraine scolds him for taking such a great risk. The Aiel watch tensely as the desert’s Wise Ones, led by Amys, descend from their camp and proclaim Rhuidean’s peace. Rand requests permission to enter the city following an ancient Aiel tradition, and the Wise Ones grant it with surprise. Mat unexpectedly asks for entry as well. Despite protests from Couladin, a hostile Aiel, the Wise Ones allow both to enter. Before departing, they must leave behind their weapons. Meanwhile, Egwene begins her training with the Wise Ones, while Aviendha, forced to renounce her spears, is sent to Rhuidean to become a Wise One.

Chapter 24 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Rhuidean

Rand and Mat cross Rhuidean’s mist and discover a vast yet unfinished city, with dry fountains and majestic buildings. Rand uses the Power to restore water to a fountain, and Mat drinks desperately. They advance to the city’s center, where they find the legendary Tree of Life, Avendesora. Rand enters a circle of crystal columns alone, while Mat wanders through the plaza filled with strange objects. Finding a ter’angreal similar to the one he used in Tear, he steps through it, transporting himself to an unknown place where he is received by a strange fox-like race. He demands answers, but instead of receiving them, the enigmatic beings say, “It is done,” and decide his price for their knowledge. Suddenly, darkness engulfs him, and something tightens around his throat, cutting off his breath.

Chapter 25 Summary – The Shadow Rising – The Path to the Spear

Rand moves through the crystal columns of Rhuidean, experiencing visions of the Aiel’s past. He lives through the lives of his ancestors, from warriors to those who once served the Aes Sedai under the Way of the Leaf. He discovers the truth about the Jenn Aiel and the sacrifices that shaped their history. Meanwhile, Muradin, the Aiel who entered before him, succumbs to the agony of the revelations. Rand sees how the Aiel abandoned their pacifist beliefs and took up the spear. Each step immerses him further in his people’s memories, making him understand his destiny. At the city’s center, he finds Mat hanging from a rope. Desperate, Rand revives him with rudimentary efforts. Mat, still dazed, mentions having received misleading answers and holding a strange black spear. Both decide to leave Rhuidean, but the city reveals its final dangers as dust-like shadows attempt to kill them.

Chapter 26 Summary – The Shadow Rising – The Dedicated

Rand remains immersed in visions of the Aiel’s past. He witnesses Adan, who survives the sacking of his caravan and struggles to uphold the Da’shain Aiel traditions even as his people fracture. Jonai, another ancestor, is entrusted with safeguarding sacred objects given by the Aes Sedai before the War of the Shadow. As Rand progresses, he observes the collapse of the previous age, the fall of the Aiel from the Way of the Leaf, and their transformation into the warriors they are in his time. The visions take him through the Breaking of the World and the betrayal of those who were once pacifists. When he finally escapes the crystal columns, he finds Mat near death, hanging from a tree in Rhuidean. At dawn, they leave the city behind, wounded but forever changed. Rand knows that his fate is sealed and that the prophecy has begun to unfold.

Chapter 27 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Through the Ways

Perrin and his group travel through the Ways, a realm of shadows and danger. Tension remains high as they traverse ancient stone bridges. Faile, frustrated with Perrin, confronts him angrily, leaving him confused. Loial, the Ogier, guides them through the worn pathways until they find the gate leading to their destination. Before they can cross, Perrin senses an ominous stench—Trollocs and a Myrddraal are closing in. The group engages in a fierce battle in the darkness, with Perrin wielding his hammer. Though they emerge victorious, the threat of Machin Shin, the Black Wind, looms. Loial manages to open the gate just in time, and everyone rushes through. Perrin, the last to exit, shivers as he hears the sinister whispers of the Black Wind. Finally, the gate closes behind them, sealing away the horrors of the Ways.

Chapter 28 Summary – The Shadow Rising – The Tower of Ghenjei

After leaving the Ways, the group camps in the mountains. During the night, Perrin enters the wolves’ dream world. While exploring the Two Rivers, he sees unsettling visions: Rand surrounded by golden symbols, Mat flipping a coin at a crossroads, and Egwene with another woman watching the White Tower collapse. Seeking out wolves, he discovers a disturbing truth—they have vanished from the region. Following his instincts, he tracks a man called Slayer, who skins a wolf in the dream. He chases him to the Tower of Ghenjei, a metallic structure with no visible entrances. Before he can attempt entry, a mysterious woman warns him of the danger, mentioning the Aelfinn and Eelfinn, beings from ancient legends. Hopper, the wolf, confirms that the tower is a cursed place. Perrin awakens with the certainty that something dark is lurking in the Two Rivers.

Chapter 29 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Return Home

Perrin and his group press on toward the Two Rivers. The tension between him and Faile remains, but he remains focused on his mission. Upon arriving at the al’Thor farm, he finds only ruins and ashes. Fearing for his family, he hurries toward Emond’s Field, where he learns that the Whitecloaks have occupied the region and are searching for him. At the Winespring Inn, the mayor reveals a devastating truth: his entire family has been killed by Trollocs. Additionally, the Whitecloaks have imprisoned several villagers, and Padan Fain, now calling himself Ordeith, is among them. Overcome with grief, Perrin breaks down in Faile’s arms. Amidst his sorrow and rage, he realizes that he must fight to protect what remains of his home.

Chapter 30 Summary – The Shadow Rising – At the Foot of the Oak

Shattered by the loss of his family, Perrin finds solace in Faile’s support. Visions of his lost home haunt him, but he gathers the strength to move forward. Faile questions his plan to surrender to the Whitecloaks, and he realizes it would be pointless. Instead, he resolves to focus on freeing the prisoners, including the Luhhans and Mat’s family, and eliminating the Trollocs. Faile stands by him, and together they plan to seek out Tam al’Thor and Abell Cauthon to form a resistance. At the inn, Marin al’Vere helps them hide in an old sickhouse with the assistance of the Aiel and Loial. Along the way, an encounter with two Warders reveals that Aes Sedai are secretly present in the Two Rivers. Marin confirms that the Women’s Circle has kept their presence hidden, as the Aes Sedai have come searching for young girls with the ability to channel.

Chapter 31 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Guarantees

Perrin and his group arrive at the sickhouse, where they encounter Verin and Alanna, two Aes Sedai who have been searching for young women with the ability to channel. Verin offers her condolences for his family and explains that the Whitecloaks forced them into hiding. Perrin questions their inaction amid the crisis in the Two Rivers, but Alanna reminds him that the Three Oaths prevent Aes Sedai from using the Power against the Children of the Light except in self-defense. She also reveals that she lost her Warder in an attack. After receiving healing, Perrin meets with Tam and Abell, who confirm the dire situation: the Whitecloaks have set up a large encampment and are holding Mat’s family and the Luhhans prisoner. Meanwhile, Dain Bornhald struggles with Trolloc attacks that target only his patrols and grows suspicious of Ordeith, a dangerous man scheming in secret—even keeping a Myrddraal chained.

Chapter 32 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Unanswered Questions

Perrin and his group prepare to head toward Watch Hill. Verin insists on accompanying them, making it clear that she will not support any reckless actions. Alanna, distant and unpredictable, remains enigmatic, while Faile refuses to stay behind. Perrin convinces Loial to keep an eye on Alanna in his absence. Along the way, the Aiel scout ahead, and the men of the Two Rivers confirm that many farms have been abandoned, though the Trollocs have avoided attacking villages. Verin suggests the attacks could be a ploy to attract the attention of Andor and other kingdoms. At Jac al’Seen’s farm, the group’s arrival causes a stir, and while some remain distrustful, they ultimately accept Perrin. After explaining the threat of the Trollocs and the Whitecloaks, he persuades them to move to Emond’s Field for safety, preventing them from becoming easy prey.

Chapter 33 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Another Turn in the Pattern’s Weave

Lord Luc arrives at the al’Seen farm, exuding arrogant nobility. Perrin immediately distrusts him, as Luc suggests confronting the Whitecloaks without a strategy. When he sees Verin, Luc tenses, and his reaction is even stranger when his gaze meets Perrin’s. While the people of the Two Rivers admire Luc, Perrin confronts them with reality—staying scattered leaves them vulnerable. He convinces several families to take refuge in Emond’s Field, moving away from danger. At Watch Hill, he observes the Whitecloak camp and begins planning the prisoners’ rescue. With the help of the Aiel and Faile, he successfully frees them, but the alarm is raised. As Faile and the captives flee, Perrin leads a group of young men in a strategic retreat, drawing the Whitecloaks away from his friends. A storm looms, promising to cover their escape.

Chapter 34 Summary – The Shadow Rising – He Who Comes with the Dawn

Rand and Mat emerge from Rhuidean, exhausted and wounded, as the sun rises over the Waste. Mat barely stands, his throat marked by the noose that nearly killed him. Rand, his side wound throbbing, knows they must reach the mountain where the Aiel wait. Couladin, furious, accuses them of killing his brother Muradin, who never returned from Rhuidean. To prove his right, Rand reveals the dragons marked on his arms, the sign that he is the Car’a’carn, the prophesied leader of the Aiel. However, the reaction is not what he expected—the Shaido scatter, and Couladin remains defiant. Rand learns that Moiraine and Aviendha also entered Rhuidean. Realizing he has lost seven days in the city, he decides to accelerate his plans, knowing that the Shadow’s Forsaken continue to watch him.

Chapter 35 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Some Hard Lessons

Egwene enters Tel’aran’rhiod and meets with Elayne, who informs her that the Sea Folk believe Rand is their Coramoor and will pledge themselves to his service. She also reveals that some Windfinders can channel. Egwene is abruptly pulled back to the waking world when Amys, furious, drags her out, teaching her a lesson about the dangers of the World of Dreams. Meanwhile, the Wise Ones debate how to guide and protect Rand. They decide that Aviendha must remain at his side to watch over him, but she resists, claiming she despises him. Egwene convinces her to do it for Elayne. Later, Egwene shares a steam bath with the Wise Ones and Moiraine, who seems deeply affected by her experience in Rhuidean. More determined than ever, the Aes Sedai vows that nothing and no one will stand in the way of preparing Rand for the Last Battle, no matter the cost.

Chapter 36 Summary – The Shadow Rising – The Peddlers

The Aiel move across the harsh and rugged landscape of the Waste, with Rand and Mat riding alongside Rhuarc and Heirn. As the Jindo and the Shaido march parallel to each other, Rand notices the growing tension between the two groups. Couladin, impatient and defiant, has abandoned his brother in Rhuidean, violating Aiel customs. Aviendha, now dressed in skirts, follows Rand closely under orders from the Wise Ones, displaying open hostility toward him. Rand senses her watchful gaze, as well as the increasing scrutiny from Moiraine and Egwene. Along the way, they encounter a caravan of peddlers led by Hadnan Kadere and Keille Shaogi. Mat, eager to escape the Waste, expresses interest in traveling with them. However, Rand is wary of Kadere, sensing danger in his eyes. As they integrate with the peddlers, Rand reflects on the traps surrounding him and the uncertainty of his destiny, realizing that the true battle has only just begun.

Chapter 37 Summary – The Shadow Rising – Imre Stand and the Hidden Threat

Rand and the Aiel reach Imre Stand, a refuge with access to water, only to find it has been the site of a gruesome massacre. Blood covers the walls and ground, yet no bodies remain. Rand deduces that it was a Trolloc attack, unsettling the Aiel, who believed such creatures could not survive in the Waste. As the Jindo prepare to camp, Kadere introduces Isendre, a seductive young woman who immediately draws Aviendha’s suspicion. Rand agrees to train with spears under Rhuarc’s supervision, hoping to earn the Aiel’s respect. That night, Trollocs attack the camp, throwing everything into chaotic battle. Why is Rand al’Thor recognized as the Car’a’carn in The Shadow Rising?

Rand becomes the Car’a’carn after emerging from Rhuidean marked with the dragon tattoos on his forearms—signs identifying him as the prophesied leader of the Aiel. In the crystal columns, he experiences ancestral visions that reveal the lost origins of the Aiel and the shame hidden at their core. These revelations earn him both reverence and resentment among the Aiel, particularly from Couladin. Rand's claim reshapes the power dynamics in the Waste and cements his role in the Pattern as not just the Dragon Reborn, but the one who comes with the dawn.

What is the significance of Rand’s visions in Rhuidean about the Aiel’s past?

Rand’s visions reveal that the Aiel were once a peaceful, non-violent people who served the Aes Sedai and followed the Way of the Leaf. Over centuries of war and hardship, they abandoned that way, transforming into warriors. These visions expose the collective guilt and identity crisis of the Aiel and burden Rand with knowledge that fundamentally changes his understanding of who he must be. This truth becomes a cornerstone of his leadership, influencing how he approaches both war and peace.

How does the death of Perrin’s family impact his character arc in the Two Rivers?

The brutal murder of Perrin’s family marks a turning point in his development. Grief-stricken but resolute, he embraces his role as protector of the Two Rivers. This event galvanizes him into forming a resistance, uniting scattered villagers, and taking up arms against the Whitecloaks and Trollocs. The tragedy strips him of hesitation and transforms him into a leader forged by necessity, grief, and love. It also deepens the emotional weight of his story as he navigates loss, leadership, and loyalty.

How does Tel’aran’rhiod (the World of Dreams) contribute to Egwene’s growth?

Tel’aran’rhiod becomes Egwene’s crucible of transformation. Through dreamwalking, she gains autonomy and power outside the traditional Aes Sedai structures. Her encounter with Amys, a Wise One of the Aiel, opens the path to deeper knowledge, pushing her to train in the Waste. Egwene’s mastery of Tel’aran’rhiod elevates her role in the fight against the Shadow and positions her as a key player in both the waking world and the world of dreams—blurring the line between fate and will.

What do the prophecies Mat receives through the ter’angreal really mean?

Mat’s cryptic prophecies foretell a future full of sacrifice and unavoidable destiny: he will marry the Daughter of the Nine Moons, die and be reborn, and give up half the light of the world to save it. These revelations aren’t just mystical riddles—they mark a shift in Mat’s arc from reluctant gambler to pivotal player in the Pattern. Though he pretends indifference, the weight of these words lingers. His future is no longer his own, and every step he takes now feels tangled in threads he cannot cut.
