Prologue Summary – Towers of Midnight – Distinctions
Lan Mandragoran rides toward his destiny through the arid lands of Saldaea, following a path he abandoned twenty years ago. His goal is clear: to advance toward the Blight and face his heritage as the last king of Malkier. Along the way, a man named Bulen, son of a Malkieri, finds him and begs to join him. Although Lan tries to refuse, the young man proves his determination and reminds him of his oath. Resigned, Lan accepts his company. Meanwhile, Perrin Aybara is trapped in a disturbing dream where he struggles with his identity between wolf and man. His fears torment him as memories from the past emerge in the form of metal figures he has forged himself. Elsewhere, Graendal is discovered by Rand al’Thor, who, in a masterful move, destroys her fortress with the True Power, forcing her to flee. The shadow of the Last Battle looms over all.
Galad marches with his seven thousand men through a suffocating swamp, determined to join the Last Battle. The marshland seems endless, and his exhausted troops question the journey. Upon reaching a clearing, Galad delivers a speech that renews their resolve. However, as they exit the forest, they are ambushed by Asunawa and his forces, who outnumber them. Galad attempts to negotiate, but Asunawa demands his surrender. To protect his men, Galad offers himself under the promise that there will be no retaliation against his followers. He is captured and brutally beaten until he loses consciousness. Meanwhile, the being that was once Padan Fain advances toward the Blight, consumed by hatred and madness, his deadly mist corrupting everything in its path. In Tower Heeth, Commander Malenarin Rai prepares for an imminent battle against the Trollocs, honoring his people's tradition and his duty as a border guardian.

But he cannot abandon the orchard—the food shortage is critical, and hunger threatens the village. Suddenly, Rand al’Thor appears, exuding an aura of calm and determination. As he arrives, the trees miraculously bloom, and the apples ripen within seconds. Perrin rides with his ever-growing army of refugees and soldiers, making it increasingly difficult to manage. Delayed by illness and muddy terrain, they attempt to reach Andor, but their route changes when they discover that Maese Gill and his group have headed toward Lugard. Perrin accepts starving mercenaries into his ranks, aware that rejecting them would turn them into bandits. Tensions among his allies rise, and both he and others begin to question his leadership. As Faile watches him with concern, he struggles with his doubts about being a noble and a leader. When Gaul returns from a scouting mission, he brings unsettling news: something strange awaits on the road ahead. Tension fills the air as Egwene meets him in the Hall of the Tower. Rand, with unshakable calm, announces his decision: in one month, he will travel to Shayol Ghul to break the seals on the Dark One’s prison. Egwene, horrified, tries to reason with him, but his resolve is unwavering. The meeting ends with the promise to reunite at the Field of Merrilor. Masuri concludes that it does not belong to Ghealdan but has instead been transported there by the Pattern. Alarmed, Perrin orders its destruction with the One Power to prevent the corruption from spreading. Later, in the Wolf Dream, the wolves call him to the hunt. He resists, fearing he will lose his humanity, but the pack pulls him into a savage chase. In the frenzy, he nearly forgets who he is until Hopper stops him. Back in reality, he understands that he must learn to control his connection to the wolves before it consumes him completely.
Chapter 5 Summary – Towers of Midnight – Writings
Gawyn investigates the murder of an Aes Sedai in the White Tower. The victims had no Warders, reinforcing the theory of a premeditated attack. Later, he confronts Egwene, who reveals that the killer is Mesaana, one of the Forsaken infiltrated within the Tower. Gawyn insists that more Aes Sedai should bond Warders, but Egwene refuses to impose it as a rule. Meanwhile, Graendal, hidden in a secret refuge, is summoned by Moridin. He reprimands her for Aran’gar’s death but offers her a powerful artifact to capture Perrin Aybara, whose demise, according to ancient prophecies, is foretold. Graendal accepts the task, knowing that her own fate depends on its success.

Meanwhile, Morgase reflects on her new life and the impossibility of reclaiming her former identity. Alliandre questions Perrin’s military decisions, suggesting he hold back his troops for the Last Battle, but he insists they must return home. Meanwhile, Galad is having breakfast when Byar reports on Perrin’s army, emphasizing his ties to the Two Rivers and accusing him of being a Darkfriend. Galad decides to confront him and seeks evidence to ensure justice. Perrin, troubled by his visions, receives confirmation that his allies are with the Whitecloaks. This concerns Elayne, who suspects that the White Tower is still trying to influence Andor. Torn between human logic and wolf instinct, Perrin must decide if he’s a leader, a beast, or something in between. His time in the Wolf Dream and the fear of losing himself reflect the deeper themes of identity and purpose that define this book. What makes Rand al’Thor’s transformation so important in this book?
Rand’s evolution in Towers of Midnight is a turning point for the entire series. After descending into darkness in previous volumes, he returns with a calm strength that radiates hope. This inner peace reshapes his leadership and choices, seen vividly when he brings life back to a dead orchard or annihilates the Shadow’s forces in Maradon with awe-inspiring precision. Ituralde’s exhausted forces are moments from collapse when Rand arrives and, with terrifying grace, unleashes fire, wind, and light. The devastation is massive, but so is the hope it brings. This isn’t the Rand who once wielded power in anger. This is a man who finally understands the weight of every choice.
