Prologue Summary – Thunder Rising – Thunder’s Dream with Storm

In the darkness of the moor, Thunder gazes at the moon as a night breeze brushes his fur. Suddenly, he feels a warm sensation: his mother, Storm, is licking him like she did when he was a kit. Though he doesn't remember her in the waking world, he recognizes her scent and markings, recalling his birth in a Twoleg den. Thinking of Hawk Swoop, who lovingly raised him after arriving at the moor, he realizes that a mother’s love like Storm’s runs far deeper. Embraced by her warmth, he asks for a story, unsure of which one. Storm tells how she met Clear Sky, Thunder’s father, and the love they once shared. With sadness, Thunder wonders why that love vanished when Clear Sky rejected him. Storm assures him the love still exists, even if his father doesn’t know how to show it. When Thunder sees Clear Sky walking across the moon, he wants to go to him, but Storm holds him back: “Not yet.”

Chapter 1 Summary – Thunder Rising – Hunting Lessons on the Moor

A warm breeze at the end of leaf-bare flows through Gray Wing’s fur as he fondly watches Thunder, Lightning Tail, and Acorn Fur playing in the grass. The kits practice hunting moves under Gray Wing’s watchful eye, who is reminded of his lost sister, Fluttering Bird. During the outing, he teaches them the difference between hunting in the forest and on the moor. Thunder misses a mouse but soon manages to catch a bird, triggering painful memories of his brother Clear Sky in Gray Wing. Turtle Tail’s unexpected arrival, now pregnant, stirs mixed emotions. Gray Wing greets her warmly but notices she’s changed. She tells of her life among the Twolegs and her decision to return, revealing she’s expecting kits from a cat named Tom. Despite his discomfort, Gray Wing welcomes her back, sensing that she belongs again.

Chapter 2 Summary – Thunder Rising – Turtle Tail’s Return to Camp

Turtle Tail is met with mixed reactions: Rainswept Flower and Hawk Swoop greet her as a friend, but Shattered Ice expresses distrust. Tall Shadow defends her return, stating firmly that her unborn kits will be a strength for the group. Despite tension, Turtle Tail is grateful for the chance to come back. In her conversation with Tall Shadow, she reveals that relations between clans and rogues have turned hostile, with disputes over territory and hunting. Gray Wing reflects on how his past friendship with Clear Sky has become an irreparable division. Turtle Tail, feeling guilty for leaving, volunteers to be a camp guard, despite her condition. Jagged Peak, eager to prove himself after his injury, offers to help but is rejected by Tall Shadow. Gray Wing and Turtle Tail see how deeply that decision wounds him, recognizing that even the most injured long to feel useful.

Chapter 3 Summary – Thunder Rising – Unexpected Allies in the Hunt

Gray Wing, Turtle Tail, and Rainswept Flower leave camp to patrol and ease tension. Jagged Peak stays behind, frustrated by his limitations. While crossing the moor, the trio meets Wind and Gorse. Despite a troubled history, they now share concerns over Clear Sky’s increasingly aggressive control of hunting grounds. Wind recounts clashes with other rogues like Thorn and Dew, reflecting rising distrust. Yet she shows kindness by offering help to Turtle Tail. During their trip, they discover new hunting areas and share a bird with light-hearted camaraderie. Suddenly, they meet a silver-furred stranger named River Ripple, whose graceful, independent demeanor intrigues them. But peace is broken by barking—dogs are approaching. Wind and Gorse flee, while Gray Wing and the others race back to camp, fearing they’ve brought danger home.

Chapter 4 Summary – Thunder Rising – Confrontation in the Forest and Clear Sky’s Wrath

Thunder, breaking the rules, follows Shattered Ice into the forest, enchanted by the new scents and sounds. After catching a small shrew, Shattered Ice dismisses it and urges him to hunt bigger prey. Tension builds as Leaf and Petal, two hostile forest cats, accuse them of trespassing. Before things escalate, Falling Feather and Moon Shadow arrive, revealing that Shattered Ice once saved Falling Feather. A fight is avoided, but they make it clear Clear Sky forbids hunting on his land. The mention of his father deeply affects Thunder, who wonders if he’ll ever be accepted. Urgency rises as they hear barking from the camp. Realizing their friends are in danger, Thunder and Shattered Ice race back, desperate to prevent a disaster.

Chapter 5 Summary – Thunder Rising – Tunnel Collapse

Thunder and Shattered Ice dash back toward camp at the sound of barking. In the valley, they see Jagged Peak exposed, trying to escape the dogs. Gray Wing appears and distracts the dogs, climbing a tree to protect himself. Thunder helps Jagged Peak hide in a rabbit tunnel—cramped and dirty, but safe. Still, they fear the dogs may return. The arrival of Twolegs to retrieve the dogs brings some relief. Gray Wing tells them to come out, and Thunder emerges, but Jagged Peak, backing out, becomes stuck as the tunnel collapses. Thunder is overwhelmed with fear and guilt as earth buries his friend. When Shattered Ice returns with reinforcements, it’s clear he didn’t abandon them. But now, a new crisis unfolds: they must rescue Jagged Peak before it’s too late.

Chapter 6 Summary – Thunder Rising – Jagged Peak’s Rescue and New Alliances

Gray Wing panics as Jagged Peak is trapped in the collapsed tunnel. Despite efforts from Thunder and others, the loose earth complicates the rescue. Wind and Gorse take the lead, using their knowledge of the land, and—along with Jackdaw’s Cry—they free Jagged Peak. Gray Wing fears he’s failed to protect his brother but feels relief as he breathes again. Wind clears his nose and mouth of dirt, helping him recover. Back at camp, Jagged Peak walks in front, regaining dignity thanks to Rainswept Flower. Wind and Gorse ask to join the group. Gray Wing wants to accept but knows Tall Shadow must decide. She lets them stay for the night but is unsure about a permanent place. The day ends with a communal meal, admiration for Wind and Gorse, and Gray Wing’s reflections on the perils and wonders of their new home.

Chapter 7 Summary – Thunder Rising – Leadership Conflict and Tall Shadow’s Doubts

With the moon high, Tall Shadow asks Wind and Gorse to leave, though many want them to stay. Shattered Ice protests, pointing out that Turtle Tail, once a kittypet, was accepted, while Jagged Peak’s rescuers are turned away. Tensions rise, and Gray Wing comforts Turtle Tail, who nearly leaves. Shattered Ice then openly challenges Tall Shadow, suggesting Gray Wing become leader for risking his life. Chaos erupts; even Jackdaw’s Cry supports a leadership change. Tall Shadow is furious, but Gray Wing refuses to replace her and urges unity. Jagged Peak suggests organizing by each cat’s skills, but this sparks further arguments. Gray Wing tries to calm things and reaffirms his refusal to lead. The cats return to their nests, but tension lingers, and Gray Wing senses something has shifted.

Chapter 8 Summary – Thunder Rising – Turtle Tail’s Kits Are Born

After a tense day, Gray Wing and Thunder go hunting. Though Thunder struggles with open terrain, he improves through observation. A heated argument breaks out due to pressure from Gray Wing, but they reconcile. When Turtle Tail goes into labor, Gray Wing rushes to her, overwhelmed with emotion. Initially held back, he eventually sees the three newborns: two males and one female. He feels deep tenderness and a possible paternal bond. Turtle Tail expresses her wish for the kits to have a father, leaving Gray Wing confused. That night, he dreams of Stoneteller at the Cave of Pointed Stones, who tells him a new path awaits and he must be brave. Gray Wing dismisses the dream and reaffirms Tall Shadow as leader. He and Thunder bring food for Turtle Tail and help settle the kits. The group celebrates the new arrivals, and Gray Wing considers his place in their lives.

Chapter 9 Summary – Thunder Rising – Bumble’s Arrival and Tall Shadow’s Decision

Gray Wing, Turtle Tail, and the kits meet Wind and Gorse just as Bumble, Turtle Tail’s former kittypet housemate, appears. Injured by Tom, Bumble asks to join them. Wind and Gorse—still not officially accepted—watch warily. Bumble insists on speaking with Tall Shadow, who kindly tries to turn her away. Wind steps in, bluntly stating that Bumble lacks the skills to survive and would be a burden. Bumble, hurt, leaves in anger, accusing Turtle Tail of betrayal. Tall Shadow later opens up to Gray Wing, confessing her self-doubt as a leader. He reassures her he would never challenge her. While Tall Shadow still hesitates about accepting Wind and Gorse, Gray Wing is unsettled by the future. He begins to see Wind in a new light, admiring her wit and leadership.

Chapter 10 Summary – Thunder Rising – Forest Fire and a Desperate Mission

Gray Wing jolts awake from a dream to find smoke—there’s a real fire in the forest. He forms a team to aid Clear Sky and his cats. Jagged Peak stays behind to watch the kits, proud of his new role. Gray Wing, Thunder, and others push through smoke and scorched trees, finding a campsite abandoned by Twolegs—possibly the fire’s origin. Amid the chaos, Moon Shadow jumps through flames but is gravely injured. Cloud Spots and Dappled Pelt try to treat him, but the herbs are burned. As fire surrounds them, desperation rises. Gray Wing tries to reach Clear Sky, but Thunder and Jackdaw’s Cry stop him. With the threat closing in, they must flee while Moon Shadow fights for his life. Gray Wing feels helpless at his brother’s suffering and fears what lies ahead.

Chapter 11 Summary – Thunder Rising – The Leap Through Fire

Trapped by a ring of flames, Thunder watches in despair as Gray Wing collapses, barely able to breathe. An unknown voice urges him to jump, and without thinking, he runs through the fire, landing by a stream and encountering River Ripple. Thunder calls out to his companions, and one by one, they leap to safety—except for Tall Shadow and Moon Shadow, who remain trapped. When Gray Wing jumps, he falls shrouded in smoke, and Thunder helps extinguish the fire on his tail. Jackdaw’s Cry suggests soaking in the stream to withstand the flames, and Thunder joins him. Together, they pass through the fire to rescue the injured Moon Shadow, shielding him between them. Though burned by the heat, they make it back and cool their singed fur in the water. Exhausted but proud, Thunder realizes his bravery saved lives.

Chapter 12 Summary – Thunder Rising – River Ripple’s Secret Path

Weighed down by burns and a sense of failure as a leader, Gray Wing watches Thunder rise as a hero. River Ripple offers to guide them out of the fire and reveals a hidden path among the stream’s rocks. Tall Shadow hesitates, but River Ripple proves it’s safe. Gray Wing, still affected by the smoke, refuses to abandon his mission to find Clear Sky. As they cross, Gray Wing struggles to hide his pain. They reach the other side, near the clearing where they first met River Ripple. There, as thanks are exchanged, Gray Wing and Thunder begin calling for Clear Sky, fearing he’s perished. But a faint meow brings hope. Clear Sky and his group emerge from the flames and rush toward the water. Gray Wing, Thunder, and River Ripple help them across. Exhausted but alive, they reunite. Thunder confronts his father for the first time—and saves him. Tension lingers in an emotional encounter.

Chapter 13 Summary – Thunder Rising – Blood, Prey, and Rats

Excited to reconnect with his father, Thunder joins Clear Sky on a hunt. They chase two rabbits startled by the fire, and Thunder proves his skill by catching one after a fierce pursuit. But victory is interrupted by an ambush of rats. Remembering Gray Wing’s teachings, Thunder defends himself, and with Clear Sky’s help, they defeat the attackers by working together. His father’s pride makes Thunder feel special, though he’s guilty for setting aside the one who raised him. As they walk, Clear Sky talks about the past, the journey from the mountains, and the sacrifices made to protect his family. Upon returning with the rabbit, Gray Wing greets them with relief, but tension arises in a conversation between the two brothers. Clear Sky, defiantly, defends Thunder, who feels caught between admiration for his father and loyalty to Gray Wing.

Chapter 14 Summary – Thunder Rising – Thunder’s Decision

Thunder’s growing bond with Clear Sky worries Gray Wing, who feels pushed aside. Meanwhile, Tall Shadow, overcome with guilt after the fire and Moon Shadow’s injuries, asks Gray Wing to take over leadership. Though surprised, he accepts, recognizing the need. In the clearing, the divide between forest and moor cats deepens despite shared danger. When Thunder approaches Clear Sky, he’s praised for bravery and skill. Clear Sky mocks Jagged Peak for his injury, triggering a tense moment interrupted by Gray Wing defending the young tom. In a twist, Clear Sky invites Thunder to join his forest group. Despite Gray Wing’s pleas, Thunder seems resolved. Clear Sky manipulates the story, claiming he pushed Thunder away as a test. Conflicted but longing to belong, Thunder agrees.

Chapter 15 Summary – Thunder Rising – The Departure of the Son of Thunder

At nightfall, Tall Shadow publicly steps down, naming Gray Wing as leader. Though shocked, he humbly accepts. Camp life slowly returns to normal—cats hunt, gather herbs, and assess fire damage. Yet tension between moor and forest cats remains. Clear Sky announces his departure and privately warns Gray Wing they won’t meet often again. He hints that Thunder will join him, citing Gray Wing’s lack of structure. Though it pains him, Gray Wing doesn’t object. Before leaving, he asks Thunder to say goodbye to Hawk Swoop, who raised him like a son. Thunder agrees, sparking an emotional reaction from Lightning Tail. In the end, Clear Sky demands Thunder join him immediately, downplaying the farewells. Torn, Thunder obeys and disappears after his father. Gray Wing, devastated, watches his son leave with the cat who once rejected him.

Chapter 16 Summary – Thunder Rising – A Night Under the Stars

At dusk, Gray Wing leaves camp to soothe his pain and tend his wounded paws. He lies in a mossy hollow but can’t sleep, tormented by thoughts of Thunder and Clear Sky. The rustling of branches announces Turtle Tail’s arrival. She surprises him and tends to his burns while listening to his worries. Her gentle care comforts him, and Gray Wing realizes he doesn’t want to be alone. He reflects on how Turtle Tail has always been there. At dawn, their kits and Rainswept Flower arrive, joking about the new couple. As the kits pounce with joy, Gray Wing feels unexpected warmth, realizing Turtle Tail may truly be his partner.

Chapter 17 Summary – Thunder Rising – Lessons on Foreign Ground

Thunder wakes in Clear Sky’s camp, sensing subtle hostility from the others. Though he tries to ignore it, his presence is clearly unwelcome. Clear Sky includes him in a patrol with Leaf, who shows open disapproval. Thunder questions past decisions about the fire, sparking a tense argument. Clear Sky defends him fiercely but pressures him to prove himself by catching a squirrel. Thunder fails miserably, feeling ashamed. Later, he catches a mouse, but Clear Sky takes credit and ignores Leaf’s effort, fueling group resentment. Thunder is left confused and frustrated. His admiration for his father fades as he faces the rigid, competitive environment. He misses the warmth and simplicity of life on the moor.

Chapter 18 Summary – Thunder Rising – Jumps of Trust and Shadow

Clear Sky takes Thunder to train among burned trees, demanding perfect jumps. Thunder, unsure, obeys. At first clumsy, he later leaps boldly to impress his father—only to fall hard. Though unhurt, Clear Sky scolds him for recklessness, leaving Thunder confused. Later, hunting alone, he encounters River Ripple and unfamiliar cats. A black tom attacks without cause, and they fight fiercely. Just as Thunder gains the upper hand, Clear Sky arrives and drives the outsiders away, treating it as a territorial threat. River Ripple tries to reason, but Clear Sky enforces his rules. Thunder protests but is silenced. Ashamed, he begins to question whether he truly belongs there—or if leaving the moor was a mistake.

Chapter 19 Summary – Thunder Rising – Father by Heart and by Clan

Gray Wing enjoys time with Turtle Tail’s kits, playing pretend fights against a fox. But during the game, he collapses due to breathing trouble. Turtle Tail and the kits help him, and Pebble Heart surprisingly names a healing herb. Cloud Spots confirms his choice, and Gray Wing recovers quickly. He gains new respect for the young cat, who seems to have a special gift. Later, at camp, the cats celebrate Wind and Gorse being renamed: Wind Runner and Gorse Fur. During the celebration, Lightning Tail voices concern about leadership and Clear Sky’s threat. Gray Wing snaps but later reflects on his role and the importance of unity. In an impromptu speech, he declares that emotional bonds are their true strength. The cats cheer him as leader, finally giving him the confidence he needed.

Chapter 20 Summary – Thunder Rising – The Bond that Protects

Gray Wing wakes beside Turtle Tail and the kits, fully aware of his love for her and his role as adoptive father. When he goes hunting, the kits insist on joining. They spot a hare, but hesitate to kill it because it’s young. Gray Wing teaches them the need to hunt for survival, not sentiment. After a successful catch, he has another breathing episode. Pebble Heart, again with instinctive precision, gives him juniper, helping him recover—confirming Gray Wing’s belief in his healing potential. Back at camp, Turtle Tail demands answers. In a private talk, she confronts him about his health and the danger of keeping secrets. Gray Wing opens up about the pressures of leadership and his fears. As they reconcile, two dogs appear. They escape by climbing a tree until Twolegs retrieve the dogs. The scare strengthens their bond and the need to support one another.

Chapter 21 Summary – Thunder Rising – Moon Shadow’s Death and a Warning Dream

Gray Wing returns to camp after the dog encounter and gathers the cats to warn them of the danger. Though most listen attentively, Tall Shadow stays apart with her injured brother, Moon Shadow. Concerned, Gray Wing tries to comfort her, but she painfully rejects him. As he rests, Pebble Heart joins him and later wakes up shaken by a prophetic dream. The young cat shares visions of dark tunnels lit by starlight and a fierce battle involving Clear Sky. Gray Wing suspects Pebble Heart has special gifts like Stoneteller and urges him to keep quiet. Their talk is interrupted by a cry—Moon Shadow has died. Tall Shadow collapses in grief, and Gray Wing arranges the burial, remembering the losses since leaving the mountains. As they carry the body, he feels something has changed forever. Upon returning, Jagged Peak informs them that Owl Eyes is missing.

Chapter 22 Summary – Thunder Rising – Lost Underground

Gray Wing leads a patrol with Jackdaw’s Cry and Tall Shadow to find Owl Eyes, following his trail until it fades under dog scent. They find blood near some bushes, heightening their fear, but soon spot the kit enthusiastically hunting a vole. Rain begins to fall, and Gray Wing, weakened, can’t run back to camp. They seek shelter in a burrow, but the entrance collapses, trapping them in darkness. Exploring the tunnels, they sense an odd smell and realize they’ve entered a badger’s den. The badger attacks, forcing them to flee through a network of passages. Jackdaw’s Cry wounds the badger during the escape, but Owl Eyes is scratched. They finally emerge and find refuge in a tree. Back at camp, Turtle Tail scolds Gray Wing for endangering the kit and declares before all that he can no longer lead due to his health. Gray Wing collapses, overwhelmed.

Chapter 23 Summary – Thunder Rising – Decisions in the Forest’s Shadow

Thunder patrols with Frost and Petal, feeling more at ease with them than others in Clear Sky’s group, yet still like an outsider. They encounter Bumble, a former kittypet claiming to have gone wild. Thunder sympathizes, but Frost and Petal harshly drive her off. Later, they spot Wind Runner crossing the border. Frost attacks her, and Thunder, under Petal’s watch, doesn’t help. Wind Runner escapes, leaving Thunder distressed. Back at camp, Clear Sky announces territorial expansion, citing post-fire scarcity. Thunder doubts his father’s motives but agrees to help mark the new borders at dawn. Clear Sky entrusts him with this honor, leaving Thunder torn between family loyalty and growing suspicion. Internal tensions build beneath a façade of unity.

Chapter 24 Summary – Thunder Rising – Borders of Blood and Compassion

At dawn, Thunder joins Clear Sky and Petal to mark new territorial boundaries. In dense brush, they’re attacked by Misty, a gray-and-white she-cat. Petal, driven by past trauma, fights fiercely, but Misty refuses to surrender. Clear Sky intervenes and, despite Thunder’s pleas, kills Misty. While dealing with the aftermath, Thunder finds two hidden kits—Misty’s children. Moved, he insists on rescuing them. Petal, surprising everyone, decides to adopt them, recalling her own abandonment as a kit. Clear Sky agrees, though Thunder senses a chilling detachment. Petal’s compassion contrasts sharply with her leader’s harshness. Though he helps bring the kits to camp, Thunder can’t stop thinking about the cost of expanding territory. The conflict between obeying Clear Sky and following his conscience deepens.

Chapter 25 Summary – Thunder Rising – The Forest’s Voice and a New Challenge

Still recovering, Gray Wing tries to maintain calm at camp while reflecting on his leadership limitations. Pebble Heart warns of a new dream foretelling danger in the forest. Before they can interpret it, Wind Runner storms into the clearing with Gorse Fur, demanding a meeting. She accuses Clear Sky of killing Misty and seizing territory by force, revealing that Thunder witnessed the violence but did nothing. Gray Wing is crushed by the actions of the cat he raised. The group is shocked, and Wind Runner rises as a leader, calling for confrontation. As anger spreads, Gray Wing steps in, calming them and organizing a patrol. He promises answers without violence. Privately, he prepares to face the deeper threat Pebble Heart senses.

Chapter 26 Summary – Thunder Rising – The Truth Behind the Attack on Bumble

Gray Wing leads a patrol into the forest, heeding Pebble Heart’s warning. A scream cuts through the stillness, guiding them to Bumble, badly injured. Her body bears deep wounds and reeks of fox, though Cloud Spots also smells a cat—Clear Sky. Panic spreads as Clear Sky appears, admitting to confronting Bumble but denying he caused the fatal wounds, blaming a fox. While Gray Wing is unsure, Turtle Tail furiously accuses Clear Sky of being a ruthless tyrant. Tension rises, and Clear Sky, unable to defend himself fully, retreats. Bumble dies shortly after, leaving Turtle Tail in mourning. Back at camp, Gray Wing recounts the events, facing criticism from Wind Runner and others for not challenging Clear Sky. Tall Shadow calls for calm and later discusses with Gray Wing the need for shared leadership and a plan to stop the growing threat Clear Sky poses.

Chapter 27 Summary – Thunder Rising – Thunder’s Return to the Moor Camp

Thunder helps Petal care for Misty’s orphaned kits, Alder and Birch, while noting Clear Sky’s unease after returning smelling of blood and fox. Fircone and Nettle quietly express doubts about Clear Sky’s leadership, urging Thunder to talk to him. Thunder tries, arguing that prey is plentiful and expansion is unnecessary, but Clear Sky responds coldly, humiliating him by using Frost’s injury as leverage. When he demands they abandon Frost to die, Thunder rebels, declares he’s leaving, and promises to take the wounded cat with him. At that moment, a fox invades the camp, and Thunder helps drive it off. Clear Sky praises him, but Thunder rejects the affection. With Frost and farewells from Falling Feather, Thunder heads to the moor to warn Gray Wing about Clear Sky’s plans. His determination grows with every step.
