Prologue Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – A warning from StarClan
In a cave illuminated by starlight, the medicine cats of the four Clans gather for a sacred ceremony: the naming of a new apprentice. Goosefeather leads Featherpaw, a young cat from ThunderClan, to the Moonstone, where he must share tongues with StarClan. Though nervous, Featherpaw accepts his fate and touches the stone with his nose, awakening in a sunlit forest. There, he meets Mallowfur, a deceased old friend, and other starry warriors. But the calm is shattered when Molepelt, a late medicine cat from ShadowClan, appears and reveals a terrifying prophecy: a dark force will rise from ShadowClan, bringing poison and destruction to all Clans. Though Hollowbelly, another spirit, tries to downplay the warning, he demands Featherpaw remain silent. Disturbed by the vision and message, Featherpaw promises to say nothing, though his thoughts remain tormented by the threat lurking in the darkness.
Chapter 1 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Play battles and hidden secrets
Yellowkit runs excitedly through ShadowClan’s camp, leading a battle game with her siblings Nutkit and Rowankit. In their imagination, they defend the territory from a WindClan invasion, using pinecones as enemies and elders as prisoners. Their fantasy ends when Raggedkit and Scorchkit, older kits, mock them for being too small to train. A verbal clash ensues, and when Nutkit calls Raggedkit a "kittypet," tension explodes. Raggedkit lashes out just before Brightflower intervenes. She orders her kits back to the den, scolding them. As Yellowkit retreats, Raggedkit’s piercing gaze lingers in her mind. Though frightened, she is intrigued by the rage she saw in him, wondering what it must be like not knowing your father—especially when others believe he was a kittypet. That uncertainty follows her back to the nursery.
Chapter 2 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The first step toward change
Yellowkit, bored and eager to play, proposes a game where she acts as a warrior mother teaching her brothers to hunt frogs. Brightflower watches proudly, noting that Yellowkit has the makings of a queen, though Yellowkit insists she’ll also be a great warrior. Her focus shifts when Cedarstar calls a meeting and Raggedkit and Scorchkit appear, smug. Yellowkit realizes they’re being named apprentices and feels frustrated to wait four more moons. During the ceremony, Brackenfoot is assigned as Raggedpaw’s mentor, sparking jealousy in Yellowkit, who worries her father will now spend more time with someone else. Later, trying to visit Sagewhisker for a sore paw, she finds her busy with Lizardstripe and leaves without speaking. She joins a pretend fox-hunting game with the elders instead. Silverflame praises Yellowkit’s performance, reinforcing her desire to become a brave, powerful warrior.
Chapter 3 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Under suspicion and without food
Early one morning, Yellowkit wakes up with a bad stomachache, like her brother Nutkit. Nutkit confesses to Brightflower that he ate a dead bird, but Yellowkit denies it. Her mother doesn’t believe her and accuses her of lying. Sagewhisker gives them yarrow to induce vomiting and cleanse their stomachs. Though it works, Yellowkit feels humiliated by her mother’s mistrust. Later, she tries to ease her hunger at the prey pile, but Sagewhisker stops her. Instead, the medicine cat invites her to help organize herbs. Yellowkit agrees and finds value in learning about marigold, juniper berries, and daisy leaves. While still frustrated by being wrongly blamed, she is fascinated by the knowledge required of a medicine cat. Still, she wonders what caused her pain if she didn’t eat the bird.
Chapter 4 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The call of snow and inner battle
Yellowkit wakes to find the camp covered in snow. She joins her siblings and the younger kits in playing outside, but feels clumsy with snow clinging to her fur. While drinking icy water, she notices Silverflame is weak and barely eating. Concerned, she tells Sagewhisker, who promises to check on her. Wanting to help, Yellowkit brings her damp moss so she doesn’t need to leave her den. Later, she accidentally watches Brackenfoot training Raggedpaw, impressed by her father’s mentoring. When caught, Raggedpaw accuses her of spying, but Brackenfoot defends her. Back at camp, she learns she and her siblings will be made apprentices. During the ceremony, she receives the name Yellowpaw and is assigned to Deerleap. But before her first outing, a stomach ache sends her to Sagewhisker, who is tending to a dying Silverflame.
Chapter 5 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Farewell in the snow and first battles
Yellowpaw helplessly witnesses Silverflame’s death and is furious that Sagewhisker couldn’t save her. She questions the value of being a medicine cat if you can’t heal those you love. Littlebird comforts her, reminding her that not even the best healers can prevent death. As leaf-bare worsens, Yellowpaw endures tough training with Deerleap. On a morning hunt, she fails her first attempt but succeeds in catching a blackbird, earning praise. Later, during battle training with Nutpaw, she suffers a sudden injury—so does Rowanpaw. No one understands why. Determined, she trains alone and accepts help from Raggedpaw, who teaches her a new defensive move. Though he shows no gratitude, Yellowpaw begins to see him differently—recognizing his skill and feeling a strange connection.
Chapter 6 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Yellowpaw’s first battle
Yellowpaw joins Deerleap for forest training. Spotting delicate sprouts among rotting leaves, she protects them, but Foxpaw and Wolfpaw crush them running by. Deerleap pairs her with Foxpaw to hunt near the Thunderpath, where they find pigeon remains with WindClan scent. Yellowpaw deduces the intruders used a new tunnel. They alert the warriors and join a patrol led by Stonetooth. Crossing into WindClan, they confront Reedfeather, who denies stealing prey. Stonetooth launches an attack. Yellowpaw fights bravely but takes a heavy blow. Raggedpaw steps in and defeats her attacker. ShadowClan returns victorious. Cedarstar praises the apprentices and names Raggedpaw a warrior: Raggedpelt. Yellowpaw, however, feels wounded that she needed saving.
Chapter 7 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Secrets at the Gathering
At her second Gathering, Yellowpaw still feels overwhelmed by the mass of cats. Foxpaw brags about Raggedpelt to RiverClan apprentices, angering Raggedpelt, who reminds him not to boast of battles at a peace event. Then, WindClan cats surround them, taunting Raggedpelt as a “kittypet,” sparking his fury. Yellowpaw intervenes to prevent a fight. Reedfeather breaks up the group. Alone, Yellowpaw asks Raggedpelt about his father, but he has no answers. That night, determined to help, she wakes early and visits the elders. Littlebird shares that Featherstorm often wandered near the sycamore by the Twolegplace before having kits. Yellowpaw decides she’ll take Raggedpelt there to uncover the truth—believing he deserves to know, no matter what they find.
Chapter 8 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The journey to Twolegplace and Hal’s truth
Yellowpaw convinces Raggedpelt to go to Twolegplace. They sneak out through the dump tunnel and arrive in a yellow-lit neighborhood. Chased by a dog, they escape and meet three kittypets, including Marmalade. Though wary, they allow one question. Yellowpaw asks about Featherstorm, but none recognize her. As they leave, a young she-cat directs them to Hal. Hal denies knowing Featherstorm. Yellowpaw, noting his fur and eyes, sees the resemblance to Raggedpelt, but Hal coldly rejects them. Back at camp, she joins a patrol to Carrionplace and catches a huge rat with Archeye, making her proud. Cedarstar praises her, though Raggedpelt remains distant. That night, Deerleap tells her they’ll travel to the Moonstone. Yellowpaw dreams of intense visions, emotions, pain, and confusion. She wakes feeling something in her fate has shifted, but doesn’t understand what.
Chapter 9 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The pain of others
Yellowpaw is named a warrior—Yellowfang—alongside Nutwhisker and Rowanberry. Though happy, she notices Raggedpelt is still distant. Sagewhisker asks about her Moonstone dream, but Yellowfang lies, afraid of what she felt. On patrol, they find a half-eaten bird with Twolegplace scent. Outraged, Cedarstar organizes a nighttime ambush. During the battle, Yellowfang feels sharp pain despite no wounds. Afterward, she collapses. Deerleap brings her to Sagewhisker, who realizes Yellowfang is feeling others’ injuries. The young warrior refuses to believe it, insisting she only wants to fight. Sagewhisker says StarClan gave her the gift for a reason. Confused and angry, Yellowfang starts to realize her path may not be what she envisioned.
Chapter 10 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The gift she doesn’t want
Yellowfang flees the camp, overwhelmed by Sagewhisker’s revelation. She avoids comfort from her mother and sister, and when she notices her paw hurts exactly like Rowanberry’s injured claw, she accepts the gift is real—but chooses to hide it. Days later, she joins a patrol that finds Red and Boulder hunting in Clan territory. Cedarstar orders an ambush. During the fight, Red recognizes Yellowfang, nearly exposing her past trip to Twolegplace. Raggedpelt demands silence. Yellowfang feels every strike but pushes through. Afterward, she collapses from exhaustion. Sagewhisker confirms her pain mirrors others’. Horrified, Yellowfang insists she only wants to be a warrior. Later, Red and Boulder arrive at camp, asking to join ShadowClan. Cedarstar allows them on trial, though many are skeptical. Red promises to keep Yellowfang and Raggedpelt’s secret. Despite her fear, Yellowfang remains determined to protect her Clan’s future.
Chapter 11 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The badger attack
During a training session with Brackenfoot, Yellowfang fights against Russetpaw and Boulder, who impress with their skills despite their kittypet origins. Though she initially loses, she improves her technique and manages to take down Boulder. Back at camp, Yellowfang sees Raggedpelt walking away and follows, hoping to talk to him. Instead, she finds him cornered by a badger who attacks viciously. Feeling her companion’s pain, Yellowfang throws herself at the creature to save him. She realizes the mother badger is only protecting her young, but still chooses to lure her away from Raggedpelt. She succeeds in drawing the animal off and creates an opening for him to escape. Both return to camp injured, and Raggedpelt collapses, treated by Sagewhisker. Yellowfang is summoned by the medicine cat, who asks her to wait in the den. Though shaken by all that’s happened, Yellowfang knows something important is about to be revealed.
Chapter 12 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Sagewhisker’s decision
While recovering from the badger fight, Yellowfang is questioned by Sagewhisker about her future. Though she insists she wants to remain a warrior, the medicine cat suggests she train as a medicine apprentice due to her ability to feel others’ pain. Yellowfang firmly refuses, frustrated by her lack of control over this gift. Outside, Brightflower tells her Raggedpelt is asking for her. Yellowfang visits him, and he thanks her for saving his life. She jokes, though hides the discomfort caused by the secret they share. Later, Stonetooth tasks her with leading a patrol to track the badger. Though hesitant, she obeys and sets off with warriors and apprentices. Finding the den empty and the badger’s trail leading away from the territory, some cats want to pursue it, but Yellowfang objects. She argues it’s enough that it has fled, secretly relieved she doesn’t have to harm the animal’s young.
Chapter 13 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Warrior ceremony and new tensions
Yellowfang and Raggedpelt hunt together, enjoying their renewed bond, until Foxpaw interrupts, belittling Yellowfang’s achievements. Later, Littlebird asks for help with a tick and hints that Yellowfang shouldn’t rush into having a mate—referring to Raggedpelt. Embarrassed, Yellowfang walks off. She returns to camp to find that Foxpaw and Wolfpaw are to be named warriors. During the ceremony, Cedarstar gives them the names Foxheart and Wolfstep. Most cats offer congratulations, including Boulder and Russetpaw, who watch excitedly. However, Raggedpelt is upset by the presence of the former kittypets, insisting they still can't be trusted. Yellowfang tries to convince him they’re now part of the Clan, but he won’t budge. That night, Foxheart rudely wakes a warrior for patrol, and Yellowfang experiences a sharp stomach pain—realizing it’s Nettlespot’s hunger, a queen who recently gave birth.
Chapter 14 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Marmalade’s fury
The forest wakes under snow, and Yellowfang joins a patrol with Hollyflower, Crowtail, and Newtspeck. Near the Twolegplace, they discover a hole where kittypets crossed into their territory. Eager for a fight, Newtspeck jumps the fence and injures herself, though she tries to hide it. Yellowfang feels the pain in her own body and orders a return. The wound worsens as Newtspeck tries to jump again. On the way back, they encounter Marmalade, who recognizes Yellowfang and accuses her of returning. Hollyflower reveals Boulder and Russetpaw joined the Clan, enraging Marmalade. Later, Yellowfang brings Newtspeck to Sagewhisker for treatment. When Raggedpelt learns Marmalade saw them, he reacts angrily, afraid their secret will be exposed. Yellowfang tries to calm him, but he storms off. That night, kittypets led by Marmalade invade the camp, launching a chaotic attack that endangers all of ShadowClan.
Chapter 15 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Hal’s death
In the midst of battle, Marmalade barges in looking for Boulder and Russetpaw, convinced they’re being held against their will. Yellowfang faces off against Pixie, a white she-cat who accuses her of stealing friends. The kittypets overwhelm ShadowClan with numbers. Raggedpelt arrives just in time to aid Yellowfang, and both rush to defend the nursery. Yellowfang speaks with Cedarstar and explains the invaders are trying to rescue former companions. He sends her to find them. Yellowfang finds Raggedpelt confronting Hal, who reveals he is his father. Enraged, Raggedpelt kills him. Russetpaw, also Hal’s daughter, is devastated. Back at camp, Cedarstar asks Boulder and Russetpaw to explain. Both affirm they chose to stay. Marmalade and Pixie leave, defeated. Russetpaw vows not to forget Hal, while Raggedpelt rejects the connection and commits to his warrior path.
Chapter 16 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Hunting in times of hunger
Yellowfang and Raggedpelt search the frozen territory for food. After failing to catch a shrew, they argue, especially when Raggedpelt coldly reacts to Russetpaw catching a crow. Angry at his rejection of his half-sister, Yellowfang tells him they share the same father—Hal. He furiously denies it. Later, they catch a blackbird, and Raggedpelt, calmer, mentions he wishes they could be mentors together someday. Back at camp, hunger persists, and cats like Littlebird show signs of fever. Yellowfang runs to Sagewhisker, who urges her to use herbs. Fearful of causing harm, Yellowfang hesitates, but she sees the herbs are critically low. She refuses to train with Raggedpelt, and after an argument, joins another patrol. She finds coltsfoot in the forest but returns to face Raggedpelt’s scorn for gathering herbs instead of hunting.
Chapter 17 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Visions of an unexpected future
Yellowfang wakes in the night, struggling to breathe, and realizes she’s feeling Littlebird’s suffering in the elders’ den. Without waiting for Sagewhisker, she finds a juniper berry and moistens Littlebird with moss, easing her pain. Back in the den, Raggedpelt scolds her for doing a job that isn’t hers, but she only wants to relieve suffering. That night, she’s not chosen for the Gathering and anxiously awaits news. Raggedpelt returns irritated by Heatherstar’s accusations and Featherwhisker’s suspicions. Foxheart and Lizardstripe mock Yellowfang for her herbal leanings, and Raggedpelt urges her to protect her warrior image. The next day, she joins a patrol near WindClan and finds fresh tracks. Tension escalates into a fierce battle with WindClan, where Yellowfang is severely wounded.
Chapter 18 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The choice that changes everything
Recovering in Sagewhisker’s den, Yellowfang wrestles with the decision to abandon her warrior life. Medicine begins to take over as she helps Nettlespot, weakened from lack of food. When Russetpaw and Boulder are made warriors, she attends proudly but notices Raggedpelt’s coldness. After a walk with him, she tires quickly and returns to camp as Sagewhisker leaves for the Moonstone. That night, Poolcloud wakes her in panic: Cloudkit is sick. Alone, Yellowfang gives him willow and keeps him hydrated all night. At dawn, Sagewhisker confirms she acted correctly and praises her. She offers Yellowfang the chance to be her apprentice. At first, Yellowfang refuses, but realizing her rare gift can save lives, she accepts—knowing it means giving up Raggedpelt and the future they once dreamed of.
Chapter 19 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The beginning of the healer’s path
Cedarstar calls the Clan to announce Yellowfang will be a medicine apprentice. Though many congratulate her, she feels the sting of judgment and Raggedpelt’s coldness. Rowanberry mourns the loss of their friendship, and Foxheart mocks her new duties. Still, Sagewhisker trains her in managing others’ pain and herb identification. While cleaning the den, Stonetooth encourages her, saying one day even those who mock her will seek her help. At her first Moonstone meeting, she meets Brambleberry, Featherwhisker, Goosefeather, and Hawkheart, a former warrior turned healer. In StarClan, she sees Silverflame, her old mentor, who tells her to trust herself. Back home, she helps treat Finchflight’s thorn injury, and for the first time, controls the pain that’s not her own—taking a confident step on her new path.
Chapter 20 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The attack on Carrionplace
A group of warriors returns to camp injured after being attacked by rats at Carrionplace. Yellowfang helps Sagewhisker treat them, learning to prioritize wounds while controlling her pain-sensing gift. Raggedpelt proposes a plan to trap the rats using ambushes and barriers, earning Clan admiration. The next day, patrols set off and build traps. Yellowfang and Sagewhisker hide nearby, ready to help. At first, the plan works, but the overwhelming rat numbers soon endanger the warriors. Seeing her Clanmates in trouble, Yellowfang disobeys Sagewhisker and leaps into battle, rescuing several cats, including Cedarstar. Her warrior training kicks in as she fights fiercely, helping her Clan survive. The victory is bittersweet, but Yellowfang finally understands the true value of her new role.
Chapter 21 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The night of recognition
Yellowfang tends to the wounded after the rat battle, concerned about the shortage of herbs and risk of infection. Stonetooth and Hollyflower suffer serious bites, but Sagewhisker, after leaving Cedarstar’s den, tells Yellowfang that the leader has lost a life and now only has one left—a fact that must remain secret. While treating Raggedpelt, he blames himself for the events, but Cedarstar absolves him and grants him the honor of training Cloudkit as an apprentice. Days later, under the full moon, Yellowfang attends her first Gathering as a medicine apprentice. During the event, Cedarstar announces Stonetooth’s retirement and names Raggedpelt as the new deputy. Sagewhisker officially presents Yellowfang as her apprentice to the Clans. At the end, Raggedpelt secretly approaches her and confesses he still loves her, proposing they continue their relationship in secret. Moved yet hesitant, Yellowfang agrees.
Chapter 22 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The price of forbidden love
Through newleaf and greenleaf, Yellowfang and Raggedpelt maintain their secret relationship, meeting in the most remote corners of the territory. Their encounters are tender and intimate, and she starts to believe StarClan approves of her double life since no sign of disapproval has appeared. One day, while gathering herbs and discussing duties, a group of ShadowClan warriors is attacked by rogues. Both rush to help, and Raggedpelt fights fiercely, driving the intruders off. Among the wounded is Cloudpaw, his apprentice, with a deep belly wound. Yellowfang quickly blocks his pain to treat him and orders cobwebs and for Sagewhisker to be summoned. Raggedpelt carries his apprentice back to camp while Yellowfang stabilizes him. Upon arrival, the Clan is horrified by the apprentice’s condition. Tension and fear rise, and Yellowfang swears to do everything she can to save him.
Chapter 23 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The oath at the Moonstone
Yellowfang tirelessly cares for Cloudpaw, refusing to give up on him. She ignores Sagewhisker’s doubts, applies treatments, mixes herbs, and keeps him hydrated through the night. Praying to StarClan for mercy, she dreams of a long line of medicine cats from all eras handing her healing leaves, showing she’s not alone. At dawn, Cloudpaw is still weak but alive. Yellowfang stays by his side until he finally wakes, asking for water. The Clan rejoices when he walks into the clearing for the first time again, and Cedarstar promises to make him a warrior once he recovers. Touched by her dedication and skill, Sagewhisker names Yellowfang a full medicine cat and invites her to the Moonstone. There, before the other healers and the shining stone, Yellowfang swears to serve her Clan. In her dreams, Silverflame shows her a vision of three kittens reflected in water, leaving Yellowfang unsettled.
Chapter 24 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The prophecy of darkness
As time passes, Yellowfang begins to notice alarming symptoms: extreme fatigue and weight gain. While Lizardstripe disdainfully reveals she is expecting Mudclaw’s kits, Yellowfang hides her own secret in anguish, fearing the consequences. One night, she has a nightmare in which a mysterious dark-furred cat warns her about a kit that should not be born—one destined to bring blood and fire to the forest, and only a brave mother can stop him. Terrified, Yellowfang vows to protect her kits, though she knows she cannot openly be their mother. Finally, during a walk, Sagewhisker confronts her, having noticed the pregnancy. Though disappointed, she advises Yellowfang to tell Raggedpelt. Yellowfang does, and while he’s initially happy, his reaction shifts upon realizing she won’t raise their kits. With a broken heart, she asks Lizardstripe to raise them as her own, never revealing the truth.
Chapter 25 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The birth of Brokenkit
On a dark, moonless night, Yellowfang leaves camp in silence to give birth in a dead tree beyond Clan territory. After hours of pain, three kits are born: one stillborn, one frail who dies shortly after, and one strong male with a bent tail. Upon seeing his face—already marked by fury—Yellowfang recalls the prophecy of the dark cat. Despite her fear, she feels deep love for him and decides to bring him back to camp. Lizardstripe reluctantly agrees to raise him after Raggedpelt pressures her, acknowledging the kit as his son. Yellowfang names him Brokenkit, not just for his tail, but for the ache in her heart as she gives him away. Back in the medicine den, she takes parsley to stop her milk and swears to StarClan that he is no longer her son. Hoping to change a dark fate, she closes her eyes repeating: “Brokenkit is no longer my son.”
Chapter 26 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Suspicions, illness, and rejection
Yellowfang, heartbroken from being separated from her son, is sent to collect moss—something she sees as Sagewhisker’s way of keeping her from the kit. While working, she sees apprentices training and hears Foxheart and Flintpaw mocking Nightpaw for his weakness. Noticing he’s sick, Yellowfang brings him to camp despite Foxheart’s objections. Though not showing clear illness symptoms, Nightpaw continues coughing and is told to rest. Later, Yellowfang learns Lizardstripe isn’t happy raising Brokenkit. Worried, she fears her son will never be loved. Foxheart becomes angry seeing Nightpaw help Yellowfang, accusing her of meddling in warrior matters. Speaking with her mother Brightflower, Yellowfang is hurt when she assumes Brokenkit is Foxheart’s son. When the kits leave the nursery for the first time, Brokenkit is admired, but rumors about his origins persist. Littlebird confronts Yellowfang, and though she tries to dodge the topic, guilt overwhelms her.
Chapter 27 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Warnings of the prophecy and her son’s shadow
Yellowfang travels alone to the Moonstone due to Sagewhisker’s pain. Despite her fears, the other medicine cats welcome her. In StarClan, she meets Silverflame and accuses her of not warning about her kits’ fate. Silverflame says she couldn’t prevent it and that Yellowfang would never have stopped loving Raggedpelt. Referring to Molepelt’s prophecy about the kit destined to bring blood and fire, Silverflame insists Yellowfang must not give up on Brokenkit—he might be her only hope. Upon waking, Yellowfang recalls the vision of her daughters and feels a new weight in her heart. Back at camp, she interrupts a fight between Brokenkit and his adopted siblings, who accuse him of being a kittypet’s son. Brokenkit confesses to feeling rejected by Lizardstripe. Yellowfang tries to comfort him and spends the day secretly teaching him about herbs, strengthening their hidden bond.
Chapter 28 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Conflicts in Brokentail’s heart
As Yellowfang dries herbs, Brokenkit plays at fighting imaginary enemies, certain he’ll be a great warrior. Though she teaches him about healing plants, he insists he won’t become a medicine cat. When Nightpelt arrives, now a warrior, his cough persists, and Yellowfang fears he may have to retire. Sagewhisker scolds Brokenkit for taking moss from the store, sparking conflict. The tension rises when Deerkit and Tanglekit mock Brokenkit again, and he claws one in retaliation. Yellowfang scolds him, but he accuses her of treating him like a weak kit and storms off. He avoids the medicine den afterward, leaving her waiting in vain. Nightpelt grows increasingly weak and frustrated. Sagewhisker’s sudden death deeply shakes Yellowfang, who vows at her mentor’s body to uphold the healer’s code. The Clan pays tribute while she mourns her fallen guide.
Chapter 29 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – New apprentices and a dark path
Brokenkit is made an apprentice, renamed Brokenpaw, and assigned to Nightpelt—disappointing him. Yellowfang takes solace in being assigned Runningpaw as her medicine apprentice. She teaches him about herbs, Clan borders, and the medicine code. Runningpaw is eager and respectful. At camp, Brokenpaw demands to begin battle training, but Nightpelt wants to proceed slowly, angering the young cat. Yellowfang suggests Nightpelt show him a few moves but is dismissed. She later tells Cedarstar of Nightpelt’s persistent cough and failing mentorship, but the leader explains he chose Nightpelt to teach Brokenpaw humility. At the full moon Gathering, Brokenpaw starts a fight with WindClan apprentices, breaking the truce. Cedarstar scolds him publicly, and Raggedpelt defends him fiercely—showing a dangerous view of honor.
Chapter 30 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The rise of Raggedstar and Brokentail
Yellowfang treats injuries and watches Brokenpaw train violently, wounding Tanglepaw. Nightpelt, exhausted, admits he can’t wait for his mentorship to end. One night, Yellowfang finds Cedarstar dying; Raggedpelt arrives and witnesses his passing, receiving leadership. They travel to the Moonstone, where Raggedpelt gains his nine lives and the name Raggedstar. During the ceremony, Molepelt warns Yellowfang with another dark prophecy about a cat with blood on his paws. Back at camp, Raggedstar names Foxheart as deputy, stirring whispers. Then, he prematurely names Brokenpaw a warrior: Brokentail. Many cheer, though some apprentices see it as unfair. Yellowfang is alarmed, believing she sees blood on his paws—but it’s only swamp water. Still, the prophecy’s threat looms as Raggedstar declares his son will be the Clan’s strongest warrior.
Chapter 31 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The rat threat at Carrionplace
As leafbare’s chill overtakes the forest, Yellowfang urges Raggedstar to retire Nightpelt due to his worsening cough. Though Foxheart questions her skills as a healer, Raggedstar leaves the final decision to Nightpelt. While treating Boulder for a thorn, she overhears Runningpaw expressing doubts about Brokentail and the identity of his real mother. The peace is shattered when Lizardstripe returns from patrol, badly wounded from a rat attack near Carrionplace. Yellowfang and Runningpaw tend to the injured as Brokentail proposes a new tactic: killing a few rats in front of the others to instill fear. Raggedstar approves, and an ambush is planned. Concerned by the rat numbers, Yellowfang prepares herbs for potential wounds. Nightpelt says his goodbyes to warrior duties, and at dawn, the ShadowClan cats march out, ready to execute Brokentail’s plan.
Chapter 32 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Fall of a warrior
During the ambush, Brokentail and the warriors surround and attack the rats. Two manage to mortally wound Foxheart, who collapses bleeding as Raggedstar watches in horror. Though the battle is won, her death casts a dark shadow over the victory. Back at camp, grief fills the air as warriors prepare to mourn Foxheart. Her mother, Poolcloud, and brother, Wolfstep, weep over her. That night, Raggedstar names Cloudpelt as the new deputy, shocking everyone—especially Brokentail, who expected the position. Yellowfang later hears him complaining to his father, who assures him his time will come if something happens to Cloudpelt. By newleaf, Nightpelt is improving away from warrior duties. On a walk, Yellowfang discovers Brokentail forced Stumpypaw to hang from a tree as punishment. Outraged, she confronts both Brokentail and Cloudpelt, but no one supports her. Finally, Runningpaw is officially named Runningnose, receiving his new name at the Moonstone.
Chapter 33 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The rabbit lie and a deputy’s death
Yellowfang enjoys a peaceful moment with Featherstorm’s new kits when Brokentail storms in, accusing WindClan of hunting on their land. He presents a rabbit’s body as proof, though Yellowfang suspects he caught it to provoke war. Despite her warnings, Raggedstar believes him and leads an attack. Yellowfang follows, witnessing a fierce battle in which ShadowClan is overwhelmed. Cloudpelt is critically wounded, and Yellowfang fights to save him, using all her herbs and knowledge. Brokentail shows no concern, claiming he’ll be leader soon. At dawn, Cloudpelt dies. Yellowfang informs Raggedstar, who, instead of reflecting, lashes out at her for doubting his son. That night, Brokentail is named deputy. Most cheer, but Yellowfang is filled with fear for what his leadership will bring.
Chapter 34 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Shadow and discipline in camp
Under Brokentail’s lead, life in ShadowClan becomes harsher. Night patrols cause injuries and fatigue, and Frogtail fears losing his status if he can’t train. Yellowfang watches hunger spread, hitting the vulnerable hardest. Some keep their spirits up, while others like Nightpelt find peace only away from Brokentail’s pace. Training grows brutal—Volekit begins coughing, and Yellowfang isolates and treats him. Brokentail makes warriors pretend to be dogs during exercises, causing real injuries. Raggedstar grows uneasy over low prey, but Brokentail prioritizes battle. Warriors are exhausted, yet he pushes harder. Though he scolds Frogtail for stealing food—earning Raggedstar’s praise—his ambition looms large. Yellowfang receives another grim Moonstone vision: kits fighting to the death. Returning, she finds Raggedstar had the same dream. The prophecy of blood feels inevitable.
Chapter 35 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Brokentail’s blood legacy
Raggedstar and Yellowfang share the vision of kittens brutally fighting. Alarmed, they hear Brokentail training warriors harshly. Raggedstar regrets naming him deputy, and Yellowfang painfully reminds him she was never allowed to be his mother. At camp, Fernshade happily announces she’s expecting kits, worrying Yellowfang even more. Raggedstar sees it as a blessing; Yellowfang fears the prophecy looms. As prey dwindles, Frogtail tries to take elder food, but Brokentail scolds him, earning praise. Despite this, Yellowfang fears he’ll soon challenge Raggedstar. One night, a cry confirms her fears: Brokentail returns from battle claiming Raggedstar is dead. Yellowfang rushes to confirm it, devastated. Brokentail, weeping, brings the body back, but his looming rule casts a heavy shadow on ShadowClan.
Chapter 36 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Brokenstar’s rise as ShadowClan leader
Following Raggedstar’s death, ShadowClan silently mourns. Brokentail appears subdued, delaying his trip to the Moonstone. The next day, he and Yellowfang take a detour to avoid WindClan, facing cold and rough terrain. At Mothermouth, he receives nine lives from StarClan cats—each life given with warnings about judgment, truth, compassion, and duty. Yellowfang notes some spirits hesitated. Brokentail accepts all with resolve, enduring the pain. Now Brokenstar, he returns and announces his leadership, naming Blackfoot as deputy and making Mosspaw—a very young kit—an apprentice. His commanding tone signals a new era for ShadowClan, one that deeply unsettles Yellowfang.
Chapter 37 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Birth, war, and a Clan in darkness
Fernshade gives birth with help from Yellowfang and Runningnose—Badgerkit, a striped tom. Though the nursery is joyful, Brokenstar’s shadow hangs over them. Training becomes violent, and kits like Brownkit are injured after starting too soon. Yellowfang confronts the leader, but he remains unmoved. He calls an assembly and orders daily training and permanent patrols. He even exiles elders, calling them useless. Despite quiet dissent, few speak out. Yellowfang helps the elders build a shelter within territory. In training, Mosspaw is accidentally killed by littermates. Brokenstar turns the tragedy into justification to make all kits apprentices, solidifying his power by crushing rules and innocence.
Chapter 38 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – Badgerfang and the death of the warrior code
At Fourtrees, Brokenstar proudly introduces Badgerpaw, an apprentice barely three moons old. Other medicine cats express concern, but Yellowfang, overwhelmed by fear, says nothing. After the meeting, Brokenstar promises Badgerpaw his first battle soon. Fernshade beams, unaware of her son’s fate. During the fight, Badgerpaw is killed. Flintfang carries his body back and names him Badgerfang in honor. Yellowfang, shattered, confronts Brokenstar, begging him to stop training kits so young. He mocks her threats to appeal to StarClan. When she prays, no answer comes. The night is heavy with abandonment. StarClan’s mercy and justice seem absent from ShadowClan.
Chapter 39 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The hunt and fall of Yellowfang
Brightflower wakes panicked—Marigoldkit and Mintkit are missing. Yellowfang finds them dead in a clearing, torn apart. She smelled a fox, but Brokenstar denies it. Back at camp, he gathers the Clan and subtly implies Yellowfang is to blame. Even Brackenfoot and Brightflower waver. Pretending sorrow, Brokenstar declares she must be exiled for safety. Though Runningnose and others defend her, fear silences the rest. Yellowfang realizes it’s a setup. Heartbroken and betrayed by her son, she leaves, stripped of her healer role. Alone in the forest, she carries the weight of injustice and innocent loss.
Chapter 40 Summary – Yellowfang's Secret – The vow of vengeance in the shadow of exile
In exile, Yellowfang wanders hungry and sleepless until collapsing near Fourtrees. Abandoned by StarClan, haunted by Marigoldkit and Mintkit’s deaths, she feels lost. Days later, a fiery ThunderClan apprentice finds her. They clash, and though Yellowfang fights well, exhaustion overcomes her. Instead of finishing her, the young cat shows compassion. Yellowfang is stunned. His kindness contrasts sharply with her Clan’s cruelty. She watches him leave and, for the first time, feels a spark of hope. She decides her journey isn’t over. She’ll stop Brokenstar—whatever it takes. Her fight has just begun.

FAQs – Chapter by Chapter Summary – Warrior Cats: Yellowfang’s Secret
What early warning shapes Yellowfang’s fate, and why does it matter to ShadowClan?
At the Moonstone, a prophecy foresees a dark force rising from ShadowClan, poisoning the forest. Given to Featherpaw under strict silence, that omen becomes the lens through which everything is read: Yellowfang’s training, her gift, and her future sacrifices. From the first starry vision, the threat stops being “out there” and starts living inside her Clan—and, eventually, inside her own bloodline. It’s not just foreboding; it’s a time bomb that turns every choice into a test of loyalty, love, and truth.
What is Yellowfang’s gift exactly, and when does she realize it’s inescapable?
Yellowfang’s body mirrors other cats’ injuries and pain. She tries to outrun it, clinging to a warrior’s path, but during a night ambush she collapses from agony with no visible wounds; Sagewhisker infers the truth. Later, when her paw throbs like Rowanberry’s torn claw, denial ends. The gift isn’t a quirk—it’s a calling that demands discipline and sacrifice. Learning to channel that pain becomes her apprenticeship’s core, turning suffering into information and urgency into action. The healer she becomes is forged where empathy hurts the most.
Why does she abandon the warrior path and take the healer’s oath?
Because the outcomes make the answer undeniable: lives are saved when she leans into her gift. After nights triaging wounds and mastering calm under pressure, Yellowfang keeps Cloudpaw alive through stubborn care and precise treatment. Sagewhisker then names her a full medicine cat at the Moonstone. In that vow, Yellowfang accepts the cost—rank, romance, and the myth of a “normal” life. Her oath is less a career change than a moral pivot: if she can hold another’s pain and turn it into life, she must.
How do the forbidden bond with Raggedpelt and Brokenkit/Brokentail’s birth collide with the prophecy?
The secret relationship breaks the code and forces a hidden motherhood. Haunted by dreams of a kit “who should not be born,” Yellowfang gives her son to be raised by another queen—naming him Brokenkit. The private choice soon becomes public consequence: as Raggedpelt rises and the kit hardens into Brokentail, ambition and cruelty echo the prophecy’s warning. The medicine cat who feels every wound must face the deepest one—bringing into the world the very threat she was sworn to stop. Intimacy and destiny collide in the same den.
What triggers Yellowfang’s fall in ShadowClan, and what vow does she make in exile?
Brokentail’s brutality and internal scheming culminate in a plot that strips Yellowfang of her post and home. Cast out—betrayed by her own son—she staggers into the forest with grief and anger as her only company. Near Fourtrees, a flicker of compassion rekindles purpose: her story isn’t over. She swears to confront Brokenstar and end the terror he unleashed. Exile becomes mission, and healing becomes justice—personal, costly, and inevitable. The wound she once hid now points the way forward.
