Prologue Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Birth in the storm

During a violent storm that floods the river and devastates RiverClan’s camp, Hailstar struggles to keep his Clan safe. Water invades every corner, forcing warriors to evacuate to higher ground. Amid the chaos, Echomist rescues her kits while Brightsky, Shellheart, and others try to save belongings and clanmates. Rainflower, pregnant and weakened by labor pains, lags behind. Brambleberry, the young medicine cat, decides the best option is to move her up into an old oak tree to give birth. Shellheart helps her climb as Brambleberry prepares without herbs, all of which were lost to the flood. With the storm raging around them, Rainflower gives birth to two kits. Shellheart and Brambleberry care for them amidst the rain and mud. They name them Oakkit, in honor of the tree that protected them, and Stormkit, for the storm that brought them into the world. Both parents believe their kits are destined for greatness.

Chapter 1 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – A birth in the storm

Stormkit ventures along an icy branch over the river to test his bravery, ignoring Oakkit’s warnings. From that height, he sees farther than any other kit, all the way to the Sunningrocks. However, his boldness leads to an accident: a magpie attacks him, knocking him into the freezing water. Trapped among reeds and ice, he struggles to breathe until Tanglewhisker rescues him. Back on shore, the other kits tease him, but Rainflower proudly praises him. RiverClan’s camp still bears scars from the recent flood, though the adult cats work hard to rebuild. Despite the lingering cold, Stormkit is encouraged by Hailstar’s support. When offered the chance to help, Stormkit and his companions form a kit patrol, delivering reeds and assisting with shelter repairs. The calm is suddenly broken when Rippleclaw returns with news that ThunderClan has taken the Sunningrocks.

Chapter 2 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – The Sunningrocks challenge

Stormkit rushes to watch ThunderClan warriors occupying the Sunningrocks, sparking RiverClan’s anger. Shellheart, Rippleclaw, Ottersplash, and Brightsky are sent in a patrol to deliver a warning to Pinestar, without engaging in battle. Meanwhile, Stormkit disobeys orders and takes Oakkit to spy on the encounter. From the old tree’s branches, they see Shellheart clearly state that ThunderClan may keep the Sunningrocks for now, but RiverClan will reclaim them. On their way back, the magpie reappears and Stormkit manages to drive it away with Oakkit’s help, boosting his confidence. Though he longs to be a warrior, Stormkit doesn’t yet fully understand the tension between Clans or the fragility of his Clan’s current situation. Despite the outward calm, uncertainty lingers, and although ThunderClan does not retaliate, the threat remains. More determined than ever, Stormkit promises himself he will become a model warrior.

Chapter 3 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Beyond camp limits

Stormkit wakes up excited and convinces Oakkit to go exploring, despite being forbidden to leave camp. Cleverly, they cross the territory and reach the river, where they spot a scruffy old cat collecting herbs on the bank. Outraged by the trespasser, Stormkit decides to confront him with Oakkit. They discover the cat is Goosefeather, who chases them aggressively. While fleeing, Stormkit falls into the river, hits his face, and loses consciousness as the current pulls him under. In the water, he sees a white-and-orange she-cat speaking gently to him, telling him he has an important destiny. Mudfur rescues him just in time and brings him back to camp, where Brambleberry begins treating his serious injuries. Wracked with pain, Stormkit can barely move or speak. His jaw is fractured, and his face has become twisted. As the Clan cares for him with kindness, looming physical and emotional consequences are about to change his life forever.

Chapter 4 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Rainflower’s decision

After spending a moon in the medicine den, Stormkit is cleared by Brambleberry to return to the nursery. Although Oakkit welcomes him with joy, Rainflower is distant and evasive. Learning that his apprentice training will be delayed due to his weakened condition, Stormkit begins to worry about his future as a warrior. Brambleberry reassures him that he will grow in time. However, upon returning to camp, he notices that other cats avoid looking at his disfigured face. In a moment of confusion and sorrow, Rainflower orders him to sleep in a separate nest from Oakkit. Later, Stormkit overhears a devastating conversation: his mother plans to rename him Crookedkit because she can no longer bear his appearance. Shellheart, outraged, threatens to leave Rainflower if she goes through with it. The ceremony takes place that same evening, and though the Clan murmurs, Stormkit—now Crookedkit—sees the StarClan she-cat again and clings to the hope of a grand destiny.

Chapter 5 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Crookedkit’s lonely path

Crookedkit faces the painful reality of being isolated, even from his mother. Rainflower denies Oakkit the chance to spend one last night with his brother in the nursery, insisting he sleep alone. Though Oakkit tries to comfort him, Crookedkit feels he’ll never be enough to win back his mother’s love. Oakkit’s apprentice ceremony stirs mixed feelings: Crookedkit is happy for his brother but hurt that Rainflower arranged for Shellheart to mentor him. Rejected by Beetlepaw and dismissed by other cats, Crookedkit tries to help around camp, but everyone excludes him for being “too small.” Rainflower coldly tells him she’ll be moving to the warriors’ den, leaving him behind. In a final effort to impress her, he climbs a tree to catch her attention, but she ignores him. In the darkness, Crookedkit decides to seek answers on his own. Convinced his destiny is tied to StarClan, he plans to journey to the Moonstone for understanding.

Chapter 6 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Crookedkit’s secret journey

Crookedkit sneaks out of camp in the rain, determined to reach the Moonstone and find out if his destiny justifies all the pain he’s endured since his accident. Though he doesn’t know how to swim, he bravely crosses the river over slick rocks, confronting his fears. He enters ThunderClan territory, navigating through vegetation, then ventures into WindClan lands, hiding upon detecting their scent. From a rock, he sees Fallowtail with a WindClan cat, and when spotted, hides in a crevice until they leave. Stunned by her betrayal, he continues across open lands, where a rabbit startles him while being chased by a monster. Crossing the dangerous Thunderpath, he finds shelter in a barn where, exhausted and starving, he falls asleep unsure if he’ll ever reach the Moonstone.

Chapter 7 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Meeting Fleck and the barn cats

In his dreams, Crookedkit meets Mapleshade, a StarClan she-cat who urges him to return to the Clan, promising that all his suffering is part of his destiny. Though uncertain, he agrees to return. Waking up in the barn, hunger overwhelms him. Attempting to hunt, he meets Fleck, a barn cat who, after a playful scuffle, offers him food and teaches him to eat with his broken jaw. Crookedkit tries mouse for the first time and learns new hunting techniques. Curious about Fleck’s life and family, he helps care for Fleck’s sister Mitzi and her four kits. Interacting with them reminds him of his former Clanmates and makes him feel useful and happy. He teaches the kits to play and pledges to help them, delaying his return while discovering a temporary sense of belonging with this new family.

Chapter 8 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – The cornfield test and the call of duty

After living a moon cycle with Fleck and Mitzi, Crookedkit dreams again of Mapleshade, who insists he return to his Clan to fulfill his destiny. Although happy helping on the farm, he knows he doesn’t belong there. Soon after, a field monster begins harvesting and heads straight for the kits’ nest. Crookedkit rushes through the corn and rescues Soot just in time. Shaking with fear, he saves her and reaffirms his desire to return to RiverClan. Fleck and Mitzi try to convince him to stay, but Crookedkit has made his decision: he wants to be a true warrior. Sad to leave the kits, he says goodbye with gratitude. The rush of the rescue and his desire to protect his Clan motivate him to start the journey back. At last, he accepts his loyalty belongs to his Clan.

Chapter 9 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Return to the Clan and test of loyalty

Crookedkit returns to RiverClan after traveling through enemy territory all night. Mudfur, Echomist, and Oakpaw welcome him with relief, though Rippleclaw questions his loyalty. At camp, his reappearance brings mixed reactions: some greet him warmly, others, like Cedarpelt and Beetlepaw, reject him. Brambleberry examines him and confirms he is well. Hailstar is surprised by his growth and questions him. Crookedkit explains he left to seek the Moonstone and discover his destiny but found answers by helping Mitzi and her kits. He admits leaving was wrong and declares that his only wish is to become the best warrior in the Clan. Hailstar listens and, recognizing his sincerity, accepts him back. That night, Mapleshade appears in a dream and promises to teach him to lead if he puts the Clan above all. Crookedkit pledges total loyalty, unaware of the price that promise will carry.

Chapter 10 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – The birth of Crookedpaw

Crookedkit secretly trains with Mapleshade in dreams, learning combat skills and discipline. Though tired, he works hard to prove himself at camp, helping Fallowtail with her kits, Willowkit and Graykit. Despite hurtful remarks from kits and Clan whispers, he remains loyal and diligent, repairing nests and learning to swim and fish. During a snowfall, Crookedkit takes the kits out to play. While outside, a large heron attacks, and he throws himself over the kits to protect them until Ottersplash and Beetlepaw drive it off. Impressed by his bravery, Hailstar finally names him an apprentice, giving him the name Crookedpaw and assigning Cedarpelt as his mentor. Though he feels guilty about his secret alliance with Mapleshade, he swells with pride as the Clan cheers his new name. Even Rainflower acknowledges him with a nod of acceptance. His destiny has officially begun.

Chapter 11 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Fallowtail’s secret and Reedfeather’s arrival

Crookedpaw trains at night with Mapleshade, practicing battle moves that challenge his balance and exhaust his muscles as he tries to stay steady without using his tail. Frustrated by his StarClan mentor’s harshness, he clashes with her demands and keeps the secret training hidden, even from his brother Oakpaw. At dawn, he learns about rising tensions over Sunningrocks and performs small tasks for the Clan, until Brambleberry asks him to fetch coltsfoot near the waterfall. There, he unexpectedly meets Reedfeather of WindClan, who requests to speak with Hailstar. Crookedpaw escorts him, fearing an ambush, but the warrior crosses the river without issue. Upon reaching camp, the outsider’s presence causes chaos and alarm. It’s soon revealed that Fallowtail, mother of Willowkit and Graykit, has ties to Reedfeather, who demands custody of his kits. Facing the threat of war, a guilt-ridden Fallowtail relinquishes her kits. Devastated, Crookedpaw vows that if he were leader, he would never allow such a loss.

Chapter 12 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Crookedpaw’s inner conflict

After Willowkit and Graykit’s departure, Crookedpaw throws himself into intense training with Cedarpelt, though his mentor’s teachings clash with Mapleshade’s. While Cedarpelt insists he puff up his fur to look larger, Crookedpaw defends the trickery he’s learned in his dreams. A sparring session with Piketooth and Beetlenose gives him a chance to use an advanced move and defeat his Clanmate. However, Cedarpelt scolds him for using “tricks” and disobeying instructions. The tension follows him back to camp, where he fears punishment from Hailstar. Instead, the leader advises him to enjoy training without rushing. That night, a patrol returns shaken after a dog attack was thwarted by Oakpaw’s heroism. He is honored with his warrior name: Oakheart. Although proud of his brother, Crookedpaw feels overshadowed. Learning that a Gathering is approaching, he longs to attend and prove he’s ready too.

Chapter 13 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – First Gathering with the Four Clans

Excited for his first Gathering, Crookedpaw joins RiverClan under the full moon, crossing a Twoleg bridge to reach Fourtrees. Despite the cold, his excitement keeps him alert. Among a sea of unfamiliar scents and pelts, he meets Bluepaw, a ThunderClan apprentice, and shares a shy but warm conversation. They discover they both aspire to be leaders. As the leaders share news, Heatherstar criticizes ThunderClan’s aggression and implies RiverClan has been weak. Tensions rise when Reedfeather, father of Willowkit and Graykit, clashes verbally with Ottersplash and other warriors, defending his kits’ place in WindClan. Though fighting is forbidden at Gatherings, tempers flare and Crookedpaw struggles to stay composed. Back in his dreams, Mapleshade reminds him of his vow of absolute loyalty to RiverClan. Crookedpaw resumes night training with renewed resolve, determined to leave behind any sympathy for cats from other Clans.

Chapter 14 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Crookedpaw’s first battle

When Hailstar announces it’s time to reclaim Sunningrocks, Crookedpaw is chosen to join the battle patrol alongside Oakheart and other warriors. Despite Brambleberry’s warning, he insists on fighting to prove himself. They cross the frozen river and scale the rocks, ready to confront ThunderClan. The battle erupts fiercely; Crookedpaw faces Bluepaw, the apprentice he met at the Gathering. Their clash becomes personal and brutal. Although he initially gains the upper hand, he is overwhelmed by Bluepaw and Snowpaw, who injure him badly. He escapes back to safety. The battle ends with RiverClan’s retreat after enemy reinforcements arrive. Shellheart breaks the ice to prevent ThunderClan from following, and Crookedpaw, wounded but alive, is treated by Brambleberry. Hailstar loses a life. Frustrated by his own weakness, Crookedpaw vows to one day fight as a true StarClan leader.

Chapter 15 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Return of Willowkit and Graykit

While Crookedpaw trains with Mapleshade, she suddenly urges him to wake: something important is happening. Outside, he sees a patrol returning from WindClan with Willowkit and Graykit. Hailstar nearly kills Reedfeather to ensure their escape, and with Owlfur’s help, they save the enemy warrior from drowning. Meanwhile, the kits, cold and frightened, are reunited with Fallowtail, who weeps with joy. A defeated and wounded Reedfeather is dragged away by his Clanmates. The entire Clan watches, moved, as Crookedpaw reflects on Hailstar’s ruthless defense of his Clan. He wonders whether he could make such harsh decisions. Mapleshade appears again to remind him that day will come, and he must be ready. More convinced than ever of his destiny, Crookedpaw reaffirms his goal to be a loyal and feared leader, no matter the cost.

Chapter 16 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – The journey to the Moonstone

Willowpaw and Graypaw’s apprentice ceremony fills RiverClan’s camp with joy, especially for Crookedpaw, who is happy to have new denmates. Cedarpelt announces they will journey to the Moonstone with their mentors, and Crookedpaw is thrilled to share the experience. As they travel near WindClan’s borders, Willowpaw grows nervous recalling her past, but Crookedpaw supports her, drawing from his own ties to cats outside the Clan. On the way, he reunites with Soot, his old friend from the barn, stirring mixed emotions. At Highstones, tension mounts before entering Mothermouth. Inside, the Moonstone glows brightly as the cats touch it. Crookedpaw is transported to a dark forest where he meets Mapleshade, who promises a great future if he keeps his word. He wakes frustrated, having not seen StarClan, and wonders what the others experienced.

Chapter 17 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Warrior name ceremony

Hailstar interrupts Crookedpaw’s thoughts about the future to speak privately. Though Crookedpaw declares his desire to protect his Clan, Hailstar mentions Brambleberry is worried about him, puzzling the young apprentice. When he confronts her, Brambleberry is evasive, but her reaction hints at a dark omen. Upset and confused, Crookedpaw withdraws, determined to prove himself. As spring arrives, the Clan relaxes with plentiful prey—until a dog nears camp. Crookedpaw devises a bold plan to scare it off, leading a successful ambush where he saves Willowpaw. The Clan hails his bravery. Impressed, Hailstar names him a warrior early. From that moment, Crookedpaw sheds his old name and becomes Crookedjaw, finally earning an honorable place among his Clanmates.

Chapter 18 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – New threats and old conflicts

Now a warrior, Crookedjaw enjoys his new freedom, patrolling and fishing with Willowpaw. Amid teasing, flirting, and Clan stories, their bond deepens, though he insists they’re just denmates. Near Sunningrocks, ThunderClan warriors provoke their apprentices, and Crookedjaw stands his ground verbally. The tension eases when Oakheart calls them back to camp, where Hailstar reveals a new plan to reclaim Sunningrocks without fighting—by resetting borders on the darkest night of the moon cycle. As the Clan celebrates, Hailstar praises Crookedjaw’s bravery and includes him in the upcoming patrol. Crookedjaw beams with pride, especially when Willowpaw congratulates him warmly. Though Rainflower shows no affection, he confronts her coldness with dignity. Support from Oakheart and Willowpaw strengthens his resolve to stay true to himself and his Clan, regardless of his mother’s opinion.

Chapter 19 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Vigils and Mapleshade’s warnings

During his night vigil, Crookedjaw thanks StarClan for his warrior name but is interrupted by Mapleshade, who pressures him to resume spiritual training. He refuses, firm in his warrior duty. At dawn, Willowpaw brings warmth and camaraderie. Though the Clan praises his bountiful fishing, playful teasing arises as he and Willowpaw share affectionate jokes, attracting curious glances. Later, Crookedjaw falls asleep exhausted and dreams of Mapleshade, who attacks him with harsh words and physical strikes for his feelings toward Willowpaw. He rebels against her rules but flees, confused. In the dream forest, Goosefeather encourages him to be cautious of Mapleshade and warns of dangerous paths. When she reappears, her tone shifts—pretending tenderness—claiming she only wants the best for him. Uneasy, Crookedjaw reaffirms his desire to be the best warrior and vows not to forget his destiny.

Chapter 20 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Tensions at the Gathering and births in RiverClan

At the Gathering, Crookedjaw enjoys his new warrior status and feels equal among the Clans. He briefly speaks with Bluefur, though both hide their true motives, as RiverClan plans to retake Sunningrocks. Pinestar hints at suspicions, raising tensions and ending the meeting in silence. Back at camp, alarm spreads: Shimmerpelt is giving birth prematurely. The entire Clan mobilizes to help while Crookedjaw anxiously watches. Eventually, two kits—Blackkit and Skykit—are born, stirring tenderness in him and Willowpaw. Back in his den, Crookedjaw wrestles with emotions, fearing Mapleshade’s watchful eye. Yet for the first time, he sleeps without dreaming of her. The next day, he leads his first patrol and feels proud. During the outing, Graypaw crosses a bridge and confronts Twolegs. Crookedjaw risks his life to save her. Upon returning, exhausted but steadfast, he reaffirms his commitment: nothing will scare him if it means protecting his Clan.

Chapter 21 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – The reclaiming of Sunningrocks

With greenleaf heat smothering the camp, warriors rest while Brightsky, weakened by fever, struggles to stay strong before giving birth. Crookedjaw spends the day playing with kits and chatting with Clanmates, hoping for the queen’s recovery. At dusk, Hailstar gathers the Clan and announces that tonight they will re-mark the Sunningrocks borders. Crookedjaw is chosen for the patrol, stirring jealousy in Beetlenose. Crookedjaw, however, responds humbly, thanking his mentors and peers. The patrol crosses the river in silence under the moonlight. Once in the disputed territory, they scent-mark trees and bushes, securing the area. Although ThunderClan does not appear, Crookedjaw feels the victory came too easily. The next morning confirms his suspicions: an enemy patrol approaches but retreats without a fight. Crookedjaw reaffirms his determination to protect his Clan at all costs.

Chapter 22 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – The naming of Willowbreeze

Crookedjaw trains Willowpaw before her assessment, correcting her posture for bird hunting, a skill Owlfur might expect. Though Willowpaw doubts herself, Crookedjaw’s support helps her perfect her technique and make a successful leap. As she leaves for her test, he sneaks into the woods to watch her unnoticed. From a tree, he sees her successfully catch a blackbird, feeling proud of her. Shellheart catches him spying but takes it with humor. Back at camp, tension rises: Brightsky, still weak, goes into labor. The kits are moved away as queens try to distract them. Soon the tragedy unfolds: three kits are dead, and Brightsky has passed, leaving only one daughter. Crookedjaw rushes to fetch Shimmerpelt to nurse the newborn. Sorrow blends with pride when Hailstar names Willowpaw and Graypaw as warriors—Willowbreeze and Graypool—under a rain that feels like StarClan’s tears.

Chapter 23 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Reflections after loss

RiverClan remains shrouded in grief after Brightsky’s death. Crookedjaw finds Frogkit and Skykit trying to sneak out of camp to confirm whether the dead kits have really gone to StarClan. Brambleberry reassures them their siblings are safe with their mother in the shining rivers beyond. Rumors spread that StarClan is angry, but Brambleberry insists Brightsky’s death was not a sign. Crookedjaw demands answers about his own destiny, frustrated by her silence. She only says his path will depend on his heart. Later, Hailstar proposes an ambitious plan: to claim a new stretch of forest by the river. Some are skeptical, but others eagerly support it. Ottersplash volunteers despite having small kits. Concerned about the strategy, Crookedjaw suggests scouting the other side of the river. During the patrol, he sees Mapleshade near the Twoleg pelt-dens. Her presence foreshadows looming danger, but he doesn't yet know how serious it will be.

Chapter 24 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Willowbreeze’s rescue mission

During a patrol near the Twoleg camps, Crookedjaw watches as one captures Willowbreeze and carries her into a pelt-den. Unable to stop it, he flees with his patrol to organize a rescue. Back at camp, he learns RiverClan has lost its battle against ThunderClan. A wounded and disheartened Hailstar postpones the rescue until morning, angering Crookedjaw and Fallowtail. Driven by urgency, Crookedjaw promises to save Willowbreeze that night. Graypool insists on going with him, and he reluctantly agrees. Together, they stealthily infiltrate the Twoleg area, locate the trap where Willowbreeze is held, and wait patiently until the humans sleep. With effort, they free her just before being discovered. Amid lights, shouting, and confusion, the three flee across the fields with Twolegs chasing them, finally reaching the safety of the forest—proving that even in darkness, loyalty shines bright.

Chapter 25 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – The oath with Mapleshade

As Willowbreeze and Graypool return to camp, Crookedjaw steps aside upon hearing a voice. Mapleshade waits hidden among the reeds, furious at his disobedience. She attacks, accusing him of breaking his promise by saving Willowbreeze instead of putting his Clan first. During the fight, Crookedjaw overpowers her and demands answers. Mapleshade, now weak and aged, praises his strength and reveals her vision: he is destined to be the greatest leader of all the Clans. She warns that his greatness depends on his ability to sacrifice—even those he loves. Still uncertain, Crookedjaw promises to follow his destiny. Rain begins to fall, washing Mapleshade away. Inspired by her words and the feat of saving Willowbreeze, he races back to camp with renewed strength and resolve. He knows that, guided by destiny, he can overcome any obstacle to become the leader RiverClan needs.

Chapter 26 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Love and danger interrupt the game

The chill of leaf-fall settles over RiverClan’s camp as Crookedjaw tries to entertain kits eager to learn battle moves. Skykit, Blackkit, Frogkit, and the others grow frustrated by restrictions, but Crookedjaw redirects them with games and helps around camp. Though he tries to stay emotionally distant from Willowbreeze, their bond becomes more obvious, despite Clan scrutiny. The pair sneaks away for a walk, climbing trees and finally confessing their love. Their moment is cut short when a dog attacks. Crookedjaw leads a chase with Whitefang and Petaldust to drive it away from camp. After a long pursuit, they drive it toward the river, but Crookedjaw notices Oakheart is missing. Searching, he finds his brother returning from the woods, wet and evasive. Crookedjaw suspects a meeting with Bluefur, but Oakheart avoids the topic, leaving him full of doubt.

Chapter 27 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Dream of Thistleclaw and Mapleshade’s warning

Crookedjaw dreams of Mapleshade, seeking answers about his destiny, but instead witnesses a brutal training session between Thistleclaw and a dark warrior named Shredtail. The violence disturbs him, especially when Thistleclaw expresses hatred toward Bluefur, wishing she had died instead of Snowfur. He awakens startled in the warm den he shares with Willowbreeze. At dawn, Crookedjaw joins a hunting patrol with Oakheart, Petaldust, and Mudfur. Along the riverbank, they catch fish and joke around, but Crookedjaw accidentally reveals knowledge of Snowfur’s death. Oakheart, caught off guard, seems troubled. Later, at the Fourtrees Gathering, Oakheart speaks to warn the Clans about the pelt-dens, gaining their attention. Crookedjaw, though proud, feels jealous. Brambleberry hints that his moment will come, but refuses to give details, leaving Crookedjaw with doubts about his true fate.

Chapter 28 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – New apprentices and responsibilities

As snow begins to fall, Hailstar names several new apprentices, including Sedgepaw, who is assigned to Crookedjaw—his first apprentice. Excited yet nervous, Crookedjaw vows to train her well. Leopardkit is also made an apprentice under Whitefang, to Mudfur’s pride. As the young cats race around celebrating, Crookedjaw and Oakheart lead a short excursion with Beetlenose to show them the territory. Though it’s a light introduction, Sedgepaw’s enthusiasm surprises him. During the outing, Crookedjaw begins to feel guilty for not appreciating his former mentor, Cedarpelt, realizing it was Mapleshade who truly shaped his fighting spirit. That night, Mapleshade appears in his dreams and demands he renew his vow: to always put the Clan above all else. Crookedjaw repeats it firmly, yet begins to question if this commitment will prevent him from keeping his heart open to those he loves.

Chapter 29 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – The dog attack and Rainflower’s death

While training in the forest, Sedgepaw spots a large dog approaching the camp. Crookedjaw quickly organizes a plan to lead it away. As Reedpaw rushes to warn the Clan, Crookedjaw, Oakheart, and Beetlenose lure the dog out of the territory. During the chase, Crookedjaw finds Rainflower by the riverbank. As he tries to distract the dog, it charges at his mother, knocking her into the water where she hits her head on a rock. Though Crookedjaw pulls her to shore, it’s too late. Mapleshade appears, insisting he honor his promise to the Clan over family. Crookedjaw rejoins his companions, and together they drive the dog out beyond the fence. However, Oakheart accuses him of abandoning Rainflower, expecting him to have saved her. Confused and distressed, Crookedjaw fears he made the wrong choice, though he tries to believe he upheld his duty as a warrior.

Chapter 30 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Rainflower’s legacy and Mudfur’s voice

Rainflower’s death weighs heavily on the Clan. Crookedjaw, overwhelmed with guilt, watches her vigil and burial. Willowbreeze tries to comfort him, but his grief runs deep: he never earned Rainflower’s forgiveness, nor proved his worth despite his twisted jaw. At dawn, Hailstar announces a mission to reclaim Sunningrocks. Crookedjaw joins the patrol with Mudfur and Voleclaw. During the meeting, Mudfur questions the point of continuing to fight for the rocks, but still agrees to go. At Sunningrocks, a ThunderClan patrol led by Adderfang confronts them. Instead of open battle, Mudfur proposes a one-on-one duel. In a fierce fight, he defeats the opponent and earns their retreat. Despite the victory, Mudfur shows no pride—only exhaustion and disillusionment. Crookedjaw, torn between satisfaction and reflection, begins to wonder whether this truly is the path to greatness he was promised.

Chapter 31 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – Mudfur’s sacrifice and a new path chosen

Mudfur returns to RiverClan injured after fighting alone to reclaim Sunningrocks, stirring controversy. Some see him as brave, but others, including Crookedjaw, feel guilty for not going with him. Hailstar acknowledges Mudfur’s act but declares that no warrior shall fight alone again. The victory rekindles excitement among the apprentices, though Oakheart remains distant, still affected by Rainflower’s death. Suddenly, Mudfur announces his resignation as a warrior—he wants to become a medicine cat apprentice, surprising everyone. Brambleberry agrees to train him, and Hailstar supports his decision. Soon after, Shellheart retires to the elders’ den, leaving the deputy position vacant. The Clan is shaken by so many changes. As Crookedjaw trains Sedgepaw and helps her catch her first prey, they find her squirrel dead with a twisted jaw. Hailstar sees it as a dark omen and solemnly names Crookedjaw the new deputy of RiverClan.

Chapter 32 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – The oath and the revelation of darkness

The Clan reacts with surprise at Crookedjaw’s appointment as deputy, but Hailstar insists it was StarClan’s will. Despite whispers about his youth, Oakheart and Shellheart’s support restores his confidence. Brambleberry, however, seems uneasy and warns that everything depends on the choices he makes. Crookedjaw accepts the role, pledging his full loyalty to the Clan, and Hailstar formally presents him. Though the mood is celebratory, Brambleberry’s concern remains. That night, Crookedjaw is visited by Mapleshade, who claims credit for sending the omen. She drags him again into the dark forest where Thistleclaw trains with a ruthless mentor. Crookedjaw realizes with horror that this place is not StarClan, but the Dark Forest. Confronting Mapleshade for manipulating fate, she reminds him of his vow to sacrifice everything to be the best. Though afraid, Crookedjaw declares he will be loyal to his Clan by choice, not out of fear.

Chapter 33 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – First challenge as deputy

At his first major Gathering as deputy, Crookedjaw faces scornful looks from other Clans—Adderfang questions his experience. Yet RiverClan cheers proudly, and even rival Clans acknowledge his role. Thistleclaw watches silently, unsettling Crookedjaw, who recalls his nightmares in the Dark Forest. Though he swears never to return there, he fears what Thistleclaw might know. After the ceremony, he finds Oakheart distant. When asked if he’s jealous, Oakheart denies it and reaffirms his support. Back at camp, Crookedjaw talks with Brambleberry, who reveals Shellheart’s illness is terminal. Grief overwhelms him, but he still fears Brambleberry will discover his link to Mapleshade. That night, he visits his dying father, who proudly acknowledges his new rank and says Rainflower would be proud too. Crookedjaw isn’t sure, and memories of the Dark Forest leave him shaken, worried about who else might be watching from the shadows.

Chapter 34 Summary – Crookedstar's Promise – ThunderClan’s threat and the hard decision for peace

As the river swells from rain, Crookedjaw remembers his father at Sunningrocks with Willowbreeze. Ottersplash interrupts with news: ThunderClan is coming. Crookedjaw leads a patrol and learns that Sunstar doesn’t intend to fight but to warn RiverClan they will reclaim Sunningrocks. He offers to avoid conflict if RiverClan retreats voluntarily but threatens battle if they return. Back at camp, younger warriors call for war, but Hailstar stops them. In private, he and Crookedjaw debate. Hailstar notes the territory isn’t useful for RiverClan and that peace is a strength too. FAQs – Chapter by Chapter Summary – Warrior Cats: Crookedstar’s Promise

What exactly does Mapleshade demand in Crookedstar’s vow, and how does it reshape his choices?

Mapleshade doesn’t hand over power; she invoices it. Her demand is simple and brutal: the Clan first, even above love and family. That conditional loyalty reframes every crossroad—rescuing Willowbreeze, facing Reedfeather, enduring grief. Crookedstar’s growth is not a montage of wins but a ledger of what he’s willing to pay to keep leading. The vow turns training into surveillance and ambition into austerity. By the time he recognizes the Dark Forest for what it is, the real decision isn’t “follow or rebel,” but whether he can choose loyalty freely instead of out of fear.

Why does the Sunningrocks dispute matter so much to Crookedstar’s rise, and which scenes prove it?

Sunningrocks is where pride, strategy, and identity collide. Early patrols teach him restraint; later clashes expose his limits and his grit. The battle where he faces Bluepaw shows both his vulnerability and resolve. Night border-marking reveals he can win without spilling blood. The one-on-one duel Mudfur proposes reframes “victory” as judgment, not brute force. Across these moments, Crookedjaw learns to read tides—literal and political—and to carry out orders while sharpening his own criteria. The rocks aren’t just land; they’re a classroom that tempers the deputy RiverClan will eventually need.

How does the barn interlude with Fleck and Mitzi change Crookedkit’s trajectory instead of derailing it?

The barn looks like a detour, but it becomes rehab for his spirit. There, Crookedkit learns to hunt around his injury, to care for kits not his own, and to accept help without shame. He discovers usefulness outside clan hierarchy, which paradoxically strengthens his desire to return worthy, not merely forgiven. Saving Soot from the harvester is a rehearsal for future rescues: act first, steady the fear later. When he goes back, he brings new stamina, quiet competence, and a definition of loyalty that includes tenderness—assets that underwrite his path from apprentice to deputy.

Why is the rescue of Willowbreeze pivotal beyond the romance?

The Twoleg-camp rescue is a referendum on his vow. By choosing a risky, covert mission with Graypool, Crookedjaw places a living clanmate above protocol and optics. The escape under lights and shouting proves he can plan, adapt, and shoulder consequences—skills leadership actually requires. Mapleshade’s fury afterward clarifies the trap: a creed that forbids love also erodes judgment. Crookedjaw’s decision doesn’t weaken his loyalty; it refines it. He returns not with a triumphal kiss, but with a sturdier sense of what “Clan first” means when a single life is on the line.

Why is Rainflower’s death framed as a test of loyalty rather than only a tragedy?

The dog attack forces an impossible choice: stay with a failing rescue or draw danger away from camp. Crookedjaw’s call—haunting and arguable—exposes the cost baked into his vow. Oakheart’s anger and Mapleshade’s cold approval split the aftermath into grief and doctrine. What remains with Crookedjaw isn’t clean heroism, but responsibility: a willingness to be judged for decisions made in seconds. That scar, more than his jaw, defines his leadership. It teaches him that loyalty sometimes means living with the worst version of yourself—and still showing up at dawn to lead.
