Prologue Summary – The Sun Trail – The Call of the Rising Sun

In a cave hidden behind a never-ending waterfall, Half Moon, an old and wise healer, watches her weakened Tribe with sadness. Hunger strikes everyone: kits fight over scraps, mothers are exhausted, and hunters return empty-pawed. As despair grows, Half Moon speaks with Lion’s Roar, an old friend who questions staying in the mountains. He recalls stories of the lake where they once lived and suggests searching for a new home. Half Moon resists, clinging to the promise made by Jay’s Wing, who named her Teller of the Pointed Stones and claimed it was her destiny. However, when she sees the Tribe’s suffering and a mysterious golden light that no one else notices, she realizes it is a sign. Inspired, she decides that some cats must travel east, toward where the sun rises, in search of a prosperous future, while she stays behind, ready to face her end and perhaps reunite with Jay’s Wing.

Chapter 1 Summary – The Sun Trail – Hunting Beneath the Snow

Gray Wing trudges up a snowy slope, recalling his childhood with Clear Sky when they used to play in the cave. Hunger weighs on him as he searches in vain for prey, until a hawk appears and Clear Sky brings it down with an impressive leap. They kill it together and decide to take it back to the cave instead of eating it, prioritizing the Tribe’s well-being. On returning, they’re warmly welcomed, especially by Turtle Tail. Jagged Peak, still young, protests that he isn’t allowed to hunt. Stoneteller watches everyone closely as the hunters eat in turns. Bright Stream admires Clear Sky, and Gray Wing notices their growing closeness. Silver Frost jokes about future kits and hints that Turtle Tail might like Gray Wing. During the meal, Fluttering Bird weakens and Quiet Rain worries for her fragility. The harmony is broken when Stoneteller summons everyone for an announcement that will change their lives.

Chapter 2 Summary – The Sun Trail – Doubts and Decisions

Gray Wing wakes up hungry as the Tribe debates the journey proposed by Stoneteller. Some, like Tall Shadow and Dappled Pelt, are excited about finding new prey, but Gray Wing is unsure. While out hunting, he meets Clear Sky and Bright Stream. Though cautious, Bright Stream confesses she always dreamed of raising her kits in the mountains with Clear Sky. Gray Wing admires her courage in considering leaving her home for love. During the hunt, they catch a hare and eat together. Later, they cross paths with Shaded Moss’s group exploring routes to the east. Gray Wing lies, saying he’s tired to avoid discussing his decision. Back at the cave, he finds it divided between those who want to leave and those who wish to stay. Quiet Rain insists he remain, but Gray Wing begins to realize not all will survive the mountains, especially after noticing Fluttering Bird’s extreme weakness.

Chapter 3 Summary – The Sun Trail – Voting for the Future

After several tense discussions, Stoneteller proposes that each cat vote with a stone on whether some should leave or stay. Gray Wing and Bright Stream gather the stones, talking about how hard it is to choose between safety and hope. One by one, Tribe members place their stone beside the waterfall if they support the journey, or against the wall if they prefer to stay. Jagged Peak, excited, votes to leave, though his mother insists he cannot go. Clear Sky, Bright Stream, Quiet Rain, and many others choose to leave. When it’s Gray Wing’s turn, he feels great pressure but finally decides to stay and places his stone by the wall. In the end, more stones are on the side of those wishing to leave. Shaded Moss will lead the group. Gray Wing, downhearted, goes hunting alone and encounters Stoneteller. She confirms the vision was real and necessary. Encouraged by her words, he reaffirms his decision to stay and trust his instincts.

Chapter 4 Summary – The Sun Trail – The Departure of the Chosen

Under the full moon, the chosen cats gather to leave the mountain. Gray Wing bids farewell to Clear Sky, who begs him to come along. Though moved, Gray Wing decides to stay to care for Quiet Rain and Jagged Peak. Stoneteller blesses the travelers, warning them of dangers ahead: Twolegs, Thunderpaths, foxes, and badgers. Each cat is honored for their skills before departing. Some like Dewy Leaf criticize the leavers, calling them cowards, but others vow to support the Tribe. Gray Wing leads a hunting group that successfully catches prey, boosting the morale of those left behind. Jagged Peak joins Gray Wing on a hunting trip and catches his first hare, showing promise. That night, he refuses to sleep, eager to hunt again. The absence of those who left is felt by all, but Gray Wing senses a renewed determination among the remaining cats.

Chapter 5 Summary – The Sun Trail – Lost in the Storm

A storm prevents Gray Wing from searching for Jagged Peak, who has disappeared after following the travelers' trail. Quiet Rain, desperate, fears she has lost another son. Once the weather clears, Gray Wing leaves with Misty Water, who proves she can still track despite her age. They find that Jagged Peak visited Fluttering Bird’s burial site before continuing eastward. Quiet Rain bids her son farewell with love and sorrow, asking Gray Wing to find and care for his brother. Gray Wing crosses an icy river, nearly dying, and continues through rocks and snow. Eventually, he hears a cry and finds Jagged Peak caught by an eagle. He rescues him in a fierce battle, suffering injuries but driving off the bird. As they huddle among rocks, Gray Wing assures his brother he’s safe and vows never to leave him again.

Chapter 6 Summary – The Sun Trail – Lost in Snow and Shadows

Gray Wing and Jagged Peak escape the eagle attack and begin a difficult descent through the valley. Despite his injuries, Gray Wing decides to accompany his stubborn yet brave younger brother. They share a bonding moment as they search for shelter at dusk. The next day, Gray Wing catches a mouse for Jagged Peak and they continue across rocky terrain. Crossing a frozen stream nearly costs Jagged Peak his life, but Gray Wing saves him. They climb a rock wall, facing constant dangers. During a snowstorm, they find refuge among rocks and bury themselves in snow to avoid a new eagle. Eventually, they realize they have climbed higher than expected and from the summit spot the rest of the cats. Excited, they plan to reunite, strengthened by the trials they’ve overcome together.

Chapter 7 Summary – The Sun Trail – The Journey Continues with New Hopes

Gray Wing and Jagged Peak reunite with the travelers, who greet them with joy and amazement. Jagged Peak proudly tells how he began the journey alone, and how Gray Wing caught up with him. The group resumes the journey under Shaded Moss’s leadership, who listens to Clear Sky’s suggestions as they cross the valley. At a pond, Dappled Pelt surprises everyone by catching a fish, sparking interest in new hunting methods. Clear Sky proudly announces that Bright Stream is expecting his kits, delighting the group. Though the path is difficult, with rocky stretches, the cats cooperate. A sudden eagle threat causes panic, but thanks to the bravery of Gray Wing, Moon Shadow, and others, they all escape safely. The group’s determination grows as they continue toward a better land amid increasing challenges.

Chapter 8 Summary – The Sun Trail – The Fall of Bright Stream

In a desperate attempt to rid themselves of the eagle threat, Clear Sky devises a plan to lure and confront them. Gray Wing, Turtle Tail, Cloud Spots, and Bright Stream attract three of the birds while others prepare to attack the fourth. The ambush works and they bring down one eagle, but during the escape, Bright Stream is caught by another and flown away. Gray Wing, devastated, chases after her but cannot save her, blaming himself for her fall. When Clear Sky hears the news, he is filled with grief, revealing that Bright Stream was expecting his kits. The entire group falls silent, overwhelmed by the tragedy. Despite the sorrow, Clear Sky promises to carry on in her honor. At dawn, Tall Shadow spots the end of the mountains—a sign that their new home is near, though marked by an irreparable loss.

Chapter 9 Summary – The Sun Trail – Crossing the Twoleg World

The cats leave the mountains and enter strange green lands filled with new creatures like sheep and cows. They marvel at the abundance of prey and the soft ground, though fear the unknown. Soon they encounter their first Thunderpath, where roaring monsters pass at high speed. Carefully, they cross in pairs, guided by Gray Wing and Clear Sky, risking their lives with each leap. Farther on, among thorny trees, a dog owned by a Twoleg attacks them. Only the arrival of the strange two-legged being drives the animal off. As they continue, they face rain, fatigue, and the shock of seeing a Twoleg city. The structures, sounds, and smells overwhelm them. Despite their fear, they seek shelter in an abandoned monster’s cave, trying to rest. Vulnerability creeps in, but they keep moving forward toward the dawn of their new life.

Chapter 10 Summary – The Sun Trail – Encounter with Kittypet Claws

Taking shelter in a vacant den, the cats rest until Moon Shadow, out hunting, is attacked by two hostile kittypets. Gray Wing, Clear Sky, and Tall Shadow rush to help, finding the kittypets fierce and aggressive. After a fierce fight, they manage to drive them off but are shocked by the threat they pose. The group quickly leaves the area, and while crossing the city, another dog scares them, though this one is confined. Eventually, leaving the Twoleg structures behind, they face a vast swamp. Despite protests from some, like Quick Water, they all cross the bog with great effort, and Jagged Peak nearly sinks, but is rescued in time. Exhausted, they find a large wooden shelter with fresh water and plenty of mice. They rest there, grateful, but also wondering whether this place could be their new home—or if their true destiny still lies ahead.

Chapter 11 Summary – The Sun Trail – The Sheep Stampede and the New Threat

The cats find a large, empty cabin and, although some are hesitant, many consider it a good place to stay. Gray Wing feels uneasy, unconvinced that this is the destination they were seeking. During the night, a strange noise wakes him, and he discovers a stampede of sheep approaching. He alerts his companions and they all escape through a crack in the wall, but Hawk Swoop is injured during the escape. Dappled Pelt and Cloud Spots manage to treat her, and though the group is wet and exhausted, they decide to spend the day outside. Clear Sky wanders off alone, lost in his grief for Bright Stream, while Gray Wing watches him with concern. As the journey resumes, the rain worsens, and Tall Shadow suffers an injury. The group travels through a forest, and Jagged Peak suspects they’re being followed. Eventually, they meet an unfamiliar cat who mentions other felines living near stones called the Highstones, sparking new questions and fears.

Chapter 12 Summary – The Sun Trail – The Fall of Shaded Moss and the Weight of Grief

While fleeing from dogs, Shaded Moss is struck by a monster while crossing the Thunderpath. Tall Shadow drags his body from the road, and Cloud Spots confirms his death. Rainswept Flower refuses to leave him behind, and with help, they carry his body across, covering it with sticks and leaves. Each cat fondly remembers his legacy. The group continues the journey in sorrow, and though some are doubtful, Gray Wing insists on honoring the fallen by continuing the mission. Upon reaching the end of the Twolegplace, the Highstones rise before them. They explore the landscape, feeling renewed hope but also nostalgia. They finally reach the summit and gaze out over vast plains, forests, and a river. Though they mourn those who didn’t make it—like Bright Stream and Shaded Moss—a new resolve to explore this territory is born. The group prepares to descend and follow the path promised by Stoneteller.

Chapter 13 Summary – The Sun Trail – Exploring New Territories and Hidden Tensions

The cats arrive at a clearing in the moor with a pond surrounded by bushes, which they decide to use as a shelter. Clear Sky leads an exploration to a waterfall with no cave behind it, while Gray Wing leads another that takes them to a huge clearing with four large oaks. There, they find signs of other cats, and though Jagged Peak wants to settle immediately, Gray Wing fears potential conflict. Back in the moor, Gray Wing hunts alone and runs into two cats, Wind and Gorse, who accuse him of stealing prey. A confrontation ensues, ending when Tall Shadow appears, imposing and driving them away. Upon returning, some cats begin to question whether the territory is truly suitable. Bad weather and fear of new encounters cool the initial excitement. The loss of Shaded Moss still weighs heavily, and uncertainty grows—but the need to hunt keeps the group going despite internal tensions and external threats.

Chapter 14 Summary – The Sun Trail – Reunion Between Brothers and New Threats

Turtle Tail encourages Gray Wing to talk to Clear Sky about Bright Stream. The two brothers meet by the river, and when Clear Sky nearly falls, Gray Wing saves him, reminding him of his promise not to let anyone else die. In an emotional exchange, both confess their guilt over Bright Stream’s death and find comfort in each other. Together they explore beyond the river and discover an island between two streams. There, they are confronted by a hostile black she-cat who drives them off her territory. Though tense, the encounter ends without a fight. Upon returning, they find the clearing with the four oaks and consider it a valuable site. Gray Wing remains concerned about the local cats. Back in the moor, more internal debates arise over leadership methods and growing resource tension. Despite efforts to maintain normalcy, it becomes clear that coexistence between the mountain cats and forest cats will be difficult and possibly violent.

Chapter 15 Summary – The Sun Trail – Forest Cats, Kittypets, and the Art of Survival

While hunting in the forest, Gray Wing and his group rescue Moon Shadow from a fierce fight with territorial cats, including the black she-cat they had already met. Wounded and angry, the outsiders retreat but warn they won’t tolerate more intruders. Back in the moor, Tall Shadow scolds Moon Shadow for acting alone but agrees they may need to hunt in the forest—always in groups. The next day, Gray Wing walks with Turtle Tail to the oak clearing, where they meet Bumble, a friendly and curious kittypet. They share stories, and though Gray Wing finds her odd, he appreciates the calm moment. They hunt together and reflect on the hardships of the journey. Meanwhile, Gray Wing explores the moor and watches Wind and Gorse hunt a rabbit. Fascinated, he tries to follow them underground but feels trapped and frightened. Nevertheless, he appreciates the experience and leaves peacefully, hopeful for a more harmonious future.

Chapter 16 Summary – The Sun Trail – Herbalists, Encounters, and an Unexpected Threat

Gray Wing decides not to go to the river and instead joins Dappled Pelt and Cloud Spots to gather herbs. While exploring the riverside vegetation, Dappled Pelt dives into the water for tansy and, after a scare, discovers she can swim. On their return, they meet Turtle Tail and Bumble sharing prey. Gray Wing is wary of Turtle Tail’s friendship with a kittypet, creating tension. That night, under the half-moon, Gray Wing gazes at the starry sky from his nest, feeling at peace until dark figures disturb the tranquility. A creature with a pointed snout and reddish fur bursts into the clearing, followed by two others. Gray Wing recognizes the stench from earlier and realizes with horror that they are being attacked by foxes. He shouts a warning, but it’s already too late: the battle begins with a bloodcurdling scream.

Chapter 17 Summary – The Sun Trail – Battle in the Darkness

Aware of the danger, Gray Wing resists rushing in and proposes a plan with Turtle Tail and Clear Sky: to attack as they once did against eagles in the mountains. Together they corner a fox, confuse it, and wound it until it flees. Then they help Tall Shadow and Jackdaw’s Cry face another fox, and the third, seeing itself alone, escapes. Though injured, everyone survives. The next morning, amid the wreckage of nests and open wounds, Clear Sky suggests moving to the forest for safety and better prey. Moon Shadow supports the idea, but Tall Shadow insists on a stone vote. Most vote to stay in the moor, but Clear Sky, Moon Shadow, Quick Water, Falling Feather, and Jagged Peak decide to leave anyway. Tall Shadow bids them farewell without resentment, though sadness hangs heavy. Gray Wing is stunned, wondering if it was the right decision.

Chapter 18 Summary – The Sun Trail – Separation and Reconciliations

Gray Wing accompanies the departing cats to the forest’s edge, warmly saying goodbye to Clear Sky. Back at the clearing, he goes hunting with Cloud Spots, and together they catch a rabbit, recalling old mountain techniques. Still, Gray Wing can’t stop thinking about how much has changed. Later, he runs into Turtle Tail, who acts suspiciously and reveals she visited Bumble in the Twolegplace. Gray Wing is upset, feeling she’s forgotten her wild roots. Angry, he ventures into the forest and finds Clear Sky and Jagged Peak, who invite him to climb trees and hunt in their new territory. Though unsure, Gray Wing joins in and tries tree hunting. He then visits his brothers’ new home, where he is warmly welcomed and meets other cats who have joined them. On returning to the moor, he meets Storm, a cat who had helped him before. They talk, and Gray Wing is intrigued by her personality.

Chapter 19 Summary – The Sun Trail – Storm and Discoveries

Worried about Turtle Tail’s absence, Gray Wing enters the Twolegplace in the rain, among monsters and unfamiliar streets. Lost and soaked, he reunites with Storm, the silver she-cat, who guides him to Bumble’s house. There he finds Turtle Tail, comfortable and happy, though upset by Gray Wing’s overprotective attitude. They return together, and while they apologize, their differences linger. Later, Gray Wing saves Storm from a forest cat attack, strengthening their bond. He invites her to see his clearing, and she shows interest. When Storm and Turtle Tail meet, tension rises, but Storm promises to return. Gray Wing, increasingly drawn to her, wonders if he could live in the moor. The next day, they meet again and explore the forest. Gray Wing suggests visiting Clear Sky, but a new cat, Fox, stops them with hostility. At the camp, Gray Wing is surprised to see that Clear Sky has welcomed several unknown cats.

Chapter 20 Summary – The Sun Trail – Expanding Loves and Tensions

In the clearing, Gray Wing notices the closeness between Jackdaw’s Cry and Hawk Swoop, hinting at a special bond. Later, while hunting on the plain, he catches a rabbit that Gorse and Wind were chasing. Instead of arguing, they offer to share it and accept his invitation to meet the others. Though Tall Shadow is suspicious, the visitors are warmly received after apologizing for their past behavior. Later, Gray Wing apologizes to Turtle Tail after seeing her helping gather herbs with Cloud Spots. The next day, when he says he’s meeting Storm, Turtle Tail shows unexpected sadness. Gray Wing doesn’t notice and runs off happily. They explore the forest together, cross streams, and share stories. At Clear Sky’s camp, they’re confronted by Fox, who escorts them warily. Storm and Clear Sky are shocked to see each other, as if they recognize one another. The tension between them leaves Gray Wing confused, and Storm departs abruptly, vaguely promising they’ll meet again.

Chapter 21 Summary – The Sun Trail – Painful Decisions and Confessions

Gray Wing, uneasy about Storm’s absence, refuses to hunt with Turtle Tail, who is saddened to learn he wants Storm to live with them. After a brief conversation with Tall Shadow about integrating Gorse and Wind into their group, Gray Wing continues his search and finally reunites with Storm. Though they share quiet moments by the river, Storm is evasive and leaves him confused. Back at camp, he argues with Turtle Tail, who, hurt by his indifference, announces she’ll go live with Bumble. Gray Wing sees her off at the edge of the Twolegplace, confused but respecting her choice. Determined, he heads to see Storm and ask her to live with him, but she reveals she’s joined Clear Sky. Devastated, Gray Wing realizes he’s lost his chance to be with her and tries to convince himself that perhaps giving happiness to his brother is the right thing to do—even if it leaves him completely alone.

Chapter 22 Summary – The Sun Trail – Fall and Confrontations in the Forest

As the weather shifts and leaves fall, Gray Wing grows concerned about the boundaries Clear Sky imposes on his territory, especially when Jackdaw’s Cry is forbidden from visiting Falling Feather. He visits his brother but is met with hostility from the new cats until Storm defends him. She reveals she is expecting kits with Clear Sky, and though Gray Wing pretends to be happy, his heart breaks. At camp, Clear Sky scolds Storm for going out, which she does not take well. Later, Jagged Peak falls from a tree while hunting and suffers a fracture. Gray Wing runs for help, bringing Dappled Pelt, who improvises a splint with sticks and bindweed. Though Jagged Peak is in pain, the treatment stabilizes him. Dappled Pelt agrees to stay at Clear Sky’s camp to care for him. Gray Wing notices Storm doesn’t even say goodbye to him, feeling increasingly excluded and worried about his brother’s path.

Chapter 23 Summary – The Sun Trail – New Shelters and Tunnels of the Past

After weeks of uncertainty, Dappled Pelt returns with news: Jagged Peak is improving, though he limps. Joy grows when Hawk Swoop announces she’s expecting Jackdaw’s Cry’s kits, prompting a search for warmer shelters for the coming cold. During a hunt, Rainswept Flower falls into a hidden tunnel but is rescued by Gray Wing and others. They discover an extensive network of abandoned rabbit tunnels that could serve as dens. Tall Shadow decides to move there, as they offer protection from the elements and threats. While digging new burrows and moving in, Gray Wing feels living underground will be challenging but necessary. Though he expresses doubts, he understands that the group’s safety comes first. The idea of future conflict with other cats troubles him, but the others’ enthusiasm gives him strength to adapt to their new subterranean environment.

Chapter 24 Summary – The Sun Trail – Brotherly Rejection and Final Break

Gray Wing welcomes Jagged Peak, who was rejected by Clear Sky for being unable to hunt due to his injury. Enraged, Gray Wing confronts his brother, who defends his choice as being for the good of the group. The argument escalates into a physical fight, and Clear Sky overpowers and banishes Gray Wing. On the way back, he runs into Storm, who says she understands Clear Sky but admits his coldness. Tall Shadow condemns Clear Sky’s behavior, affirming that loyalty to loved ones should come first. Cloud Spots starts exercises to strengthen Jagged Peak’s legs. Days later, while hunting, Gray Wing is attacked by Fox for being on Clear Sky’s territory. In self-defense, Gray Wing accidentally kills Fox. Clear Sky, enraged, completely disowns him. Shockingly, Storm intervenes, tired of Clear Sky’s control, and decides to leave the forest to raise her kits in the Twolegplace, cutting all ties with both brothers.

Chapter 25 Summary – The Sun Trail – Losses, New Paths, and a Lonely Decision

Gray Wing pleads with Clear Sky to bring Storm back, but his brother refuses, prioritizing his community over love. Despite the sorrow, Gray Wing respects his choice and returns home, where cold weather arrives and preparations for Hawk Swoop’s kits continue. Worried, he decides to look for Storm in the Twolegplace. During the dangerous journey, Turtle Tail saves him from a pursuing dog. She is happy to see him, but her joy fades when she learns he’s looking for Storm. With Bumble’s help, Gray Wing finds where Storm lives: a massive, desolate stone building. There, he finds her—gaunt but strong—and confirms she had three kits. However, Storm refuses to let him see them, declaring they are hers alone now. Accepting her decision, Gray Wing leaves with a broken heart, knowing Storm has chosen a life apart from everyone else.

Chapter 26 Summary – The Sun Trail – The Birth of Thunder Amid Ruins and Loss

Restless after leaving Storm, Gray Wing decides to return to the desolate refuge, convinced he cannot abandon her. But when he sees Turtle Tail running in terror, he learns Storm’s den is being destroyed by a Twoleg monster. They rush to the site only to watch the massive structure collapse. Gray Wing sees Storm trapped above and shares a final look with her before the building falls. In the rubble, he finds Storm gravely injured with her kits. She dies after entrusting him with her final words. One of the kits, a small ginger tom, survives. Turtle Tail helps him rescue the kitten and encourages him to take it to Clear Sky, his father. Despite the pain, Gray Wing agrees. When he presents the kitten, Clear Sky coldly rejects him, unable to face the guilt. Gray Wing takes the kit back to camp, and after an intense debate, the group agrees to take him in. They name him Thunder, and Gray Wing promises to raise him as his own son.

FAQs – Chapter by Chapter Summary – Warrior Cats: The Sun Trail

What is Gray Wing’s role in the origin of the Warrior Cats Clans?

Gray Wing is the emotional backbone of the journey that ignites the entire saga. Though he never founds a Clan himself, his choices, sacrifices, and quiet leadership shape the future. From staying behind to protect his family to adopting Thunder, he embodies compassion over power and values community over conquest.

Why does Storm reject both Gray Wing and Clear Sky at the end of the book?

Storm chooses to raise her kits alone in the Twolegplace after being emotionally pulled by both brothers. Her decision stems from exhaustion, a desire for independence, and deep disappointment. She refuses to be caught between two cats who couldn’t place her needs above their rivalry, choosing freedom and self-reliance instead.

How does Bright Stream’s death impact Clear Sky emotionally?

Bright Stream’s loss is the catalyst for Clear Sky’s descent into emotional isolation and authoritarian leadership. Her death triggers his fear of future loss, which in turn drives him to control everything around him. It’s the moment he shifts from a loving brother to a figure ruled by trauma and defensiveness.

What does the final split between the groups signify?

The division between the cats who stay in the moor and those who move into the forest is the symbolic birth of what will become the Clans. It’s not just a geographical split, but the beginning of diverging philosophies—setting the stage for future alliances, conflicts, and ideologies that define the series.

Why is the name “Thunder” chosen for Storm’s surviving kit?

Thunder is born amidst rubble and emotional wreckage. His name isn’t random—Gray Wing chooses it as a symbol of raw strength rising from devastation. It captures the sound of something inevitable and powerful beginning, even after everything has been lost.
